when the people who knew about Dewey’s existence (and by people, i mostly mean B&K, but also sometimes B) were talking about / referring to him in conversations in not so private places they usually take precautions to avoid actually using his name. like when they’re sure only people who knew the secret were present and that no one’s eavesdropping they just said “Dewey” or “D” but if they’re at a more public place then that was too risky so they have a system for that.
Kit uses “F” to refer to Frank and “Ernest” when referring to Ernest so when she uses “Frank” or “E” that was when she was talking about Dewey, and Bertrand uses the exact opposite (“F” and “Ernest” referring to Dewey, “Frank” referring to Frank himself and “E” when referring to Ernest.) (Beatrice: and these two think I’m unnecessarily dramatic???) Although once they did accidentally called him “D” thinking no one was around and then got questioned “who is D?” and then shared a quick glance before answering “L’s legal representative” “Lemony’s legal representative”
meanwhile Beatrice is just out there saying “redacted” when she think the situation calls for it “last week i visited redacted at redacted and borrowed left parenthesis stole right parenthesis a book” and nobody got suspicious because everyone just thinks Beatrice is being. well.
