The final, brilliant word on passive voice.
“She was killed [by zombies.]” <— passive
“Zombies killed [by zombies] her.” <— active
This is legit one of the best ways to identify passive voice.
And so it begins.
Done!
Here’s the recipe: GLUTEN FREE GINGERBREAD COOKIES
I have (for mom) in parentheses to remind me of my mother’s preferences since she likes a little more spice to them--use those if you also like a little more spice!
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups Bob’s 1 to 1 GF baking mix (blue label)
1/2 cup oat flour (for texture) (can sub almond) (can use up to 1 cup if running low on Bob’s but no more or too dry)
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger (2.5 for mom)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (1.5 for mom)
1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (also 1/4 allspice and 1/4 cloves for mom)
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar (can use normal sugar+ a little more molasses)
1 large egg—room temp if possible
1/2 cup molasses
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions:
beat the butter and brown sugar together until fluffy
Add the egg, molasses, and vanilla (if using a mixer, use low speed to avoid adding air to the dough)
Add all dry ingredients and mix
wrap dough in cling wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for 3+ hours (overnight is best)
Preheat oven to 350°
Heavily flour counter top, hands, and both sides of dough. Flatten with rolling pin to 1/4” for standard cookies, 1/8” for ginger snaps
Bake for 8-12 minutes (8 will be soft, 12 will be crispy)
Allow to cool for at least an hour before icing
Yields 20ish cookies depending on cutter size
Icing:
4.5 tablespoons of pasteurized egg whites
1 teaspoon of vanilla
2.5 cups of confectioners sugar
1-3 tablespoons of corn starch depending (3 for stiff icing, 1 for soft) (Edging icing should be the consistency of toothpaste, fill icing should be consistency of honey)
YAAASSSSS!! ❤️❤️❤️
I want to use this recipe for a gingerbread house with GF kiddos! ☺️
I fucking LOVE Barb so much

Incase anyone was wondering
I gotta check this out
Spending the last few days with our cat. 🐈
Americans fetishizing working until your last breath AND overworking yourself while physically ill will never not be repulsive or dangerous.
Not just Americans. I literally fainted in my office the other day, ER called in and all, and got calls from the Dean later that afternoon on work related issues, since I was "already better".
One of the most important things I learned in my Language and the Law class is that law enforcement will intentionally misinterpret every type of statement asking for a lawyer as not asking for a lawyer. Even directly saying it like this “I will not speak to you without a lawyer” can be taken as a simple statement of fact rather than a request for a lawyer. You literally have to state “I am now invoking my right to a lawyer” and every time they try to proceed with an interrogation you have to answer every question with “I am invoking my right to have a lawyer present”. You can’t just tell them you won’t talk without a lawyer or that you want a lawyer. You have to state that you are invoking your rights. Otherwise they could just say “well they just said they wouldn’t speak without a lawyer present. That’s not invoking their rights to a lawyer. It’s just stating a fact.” even just stating your right to a lawyer doesn’t count!
PLEASE share this addition. I am a lawyer who works in criminal defense, and this is one of the most avoidable things that people consistently get wrong about the Miranda rights.
Here are some more “ambiguous” phrases which courts have found DO NOT invoke your right to a lawyer:
“Maybe I should speak to my lawyer first.”
“I might like a lawyer.”
“I think I should have a lawyer present for this.”
“Could I speak to my lawyer first?”
“How long until my lawyer gets here?”
And perhaps most egregiously – “Get me a lawyer, dawg – ‘cause this is not what’s up.”
Here are the magic phrases which you need to know if you want to invoke your Miranda rights:
1) “Am I free to leave?”
It’s worth asking this even if the answer is obvious. Even if the officer does not let you leave, by forcing them to admit that you are not free to leave, you are creating a record which your attorney can use to prove that you were in custody. Miranda rights only apply if the interrogation is custodial, meaning that police officers will frequently claim that their suspects were “not in custody” to get around their Miranda rights.
2) “I am invoking my right to remain silent.”
Simply staying silent will not invoke your right to remain silent. As absurd as this is, you must explicitly say that you are invoking your right to remain silent in order to invoke that right.
3) “I am invoking my right to an attorney.”
As stated above, you must be not only clear and unambiguous, but clear and legally unambiguous. Don’t get cute. Don’t get sassy. And on the flip side, don’t get intimidated and use verbal ticks to minimize your request. Say the line with those words exactly – say it clearly, and say it once, and then say nothing else.
Because even after you’ve done all this, the police can still try to get you to talk. They’re not supposed to interrogate you, but they’re allowed to make casual conversation, and if that conversation just happens to circle back around to the thing they wanted to question you about, well, that’s really your fault for talking after you said you wouldn’t, isn’t it? Can’t possibly fault the poor officers when you initiated – if you really wanted to have your rights respected, you wouldn’t have talked to them in the first place.
The police know this, and they will mercilessly exploit this loophole. So, once you’ve successfully invoked your Miranda rights, any and all conversation you have with police officers will put those rights back into jeopardy.
Putting it all together:
Ask: “Am I free to leave?”
If they say no, say: “I am invoking my right to remain silent and I am invoking my right to an attorney.”
And then shut up and do not say a single thing to them for any reason whatsoever until you have actually spoken to an attorney. Yes, even if it takes hours. Yes, even if they start talking to you about something else.
Finally, a very important disclaimer:
I may be a lawyer, but I’m not your lawyer, and I cannot guarantee that what I’ve just laid out here will always work for every situation. We didn’t get to this bizarre and absurd place overnight – we built this ridiculous system piecemeal, by deciding on a case-by-case basis that certain phrases were “too ambiguous” or certain types of questioning weren’t actually questioning at all. The law is still in flux, and is still fundamentally out to get you, and willing to bend plain meaning beyond all recognition to do it. Even if you invoke your rights perfectly, exactly as I have specified above, there’s a chance that your invocation of rights will be disqualified on some new technicality that no one’s even thought of yet – and that’s precisely the problem.
Watch this video: “Don’t Talk To The Police”
Even after you INVOKE those rights, you have to continuously reinforce them.
“I am invoking my right to remain silent” AND THEN DON’T SPEAK. DO NOT MAKE SMALL TALK. KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. COPS ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND.
“I am invoking my right to counsel” AND THEN SHUT UP. DO NOT SAY ANOTHER WORD WITHOUT HAVING AN ATTORNEY PHYSICALLY PRESENT.
Different Stories Resonate with Different People
I will always reblog this.
I once spent three hours scouring the internet to find this comic again, I will not let that be repeated.
When I say “Fanfiction is free” part of what I’m saying is yes, you did not pay for the thing.
But I saw a comment from someone that made me realize the rest of the intention behind these words is being lost.
Fanfiction is provided for free, but it is not produced for free.
Authors pay their effort, including physical and emotional and mental. Authors pay their time, in planning the story (mental time) and writing the story (physical time). Sometimes it’s less than an hour for something quick and dirty, like askbox prompts. Sometimes it’s years of their lives in epic fic hundreds of thousands of words long. Authors pay additional time to alpha read their own stories, trying to make sure that they’re free of SPAG errors and make sense and sound good. Beta readers pay their time and effort alongside the authors for editing the stories. Authors pay for posting their stories with all of the anxieties that come from allowing their work - which to this point they have invested all of the above - into the public eye because while it has certainly cost them a good amount to produce the story, fandom history has proved that many other people out there enjoy fanfiction, and authors believe that at least someone else will enjoy their story, too.
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is that it costs the writers a lot of something in order to produce it. A lot has already been paid into a piece of fanfiction by the time it is available for readers to read. The expense of fanfiction creation is, by and large, resting squarely atop the shoulders of writers.
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is that readers don’t have to pay the cost of creating fanfiction.
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is that readers don’t have to pay in anything - not time, not money, not effort, not anything - in order for fanfiction to be created. It’s a donation. It’s a gift. It’s available for you to take or leave, at the expense of someone else.
Writers have, for a very long time, requested donations of one thing as remuneration for everything they put into making fanfiction: comments. Authors have asked, in so many different iterations: “If you have consumed what I have labored and invested in to create and if you have found any enjoyment in it, please tell me, so that I can recharge enough to do this again.” Some of them may recharge on critical comments, but most of us don’t because we’ve already paid everything we want to pay to create the story.
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” isn’t just that it doesn’t cost you any money. I am saying “Please respect the time and effort you didn’t have to pay into creating this thing you enjoyed, by respecting the individual creator’s requests.”
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is “be kind to authors, they have paid a lot for this gift they’re sharing with all of us, and they deserve to feel like it was worth it.”
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is “please don’t charge authors more time and emotional effort than what they’ve already provided you at no absolute cost.”
I’m not saying any of this to argue. It’s a fact that authors pay into providing fanfiction. They do it for fun. They do it out of love. They do it because they enjoy writing. No one is making them do it. No one is paying them to start or finish the story. That doesn’t mean it’s not WORK. And the only return they get on what they put into the story is the kindness of strangers that invest a little bit back by leaving a nice comment. That is why they stay, that is why they do it again, that is why we have fanfiction.
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is “please don’t be the one charging authors so much more that they leave.”
What I am saying when I say “fanfiction is free” is “please keep it that way.”
I’m not saying “you should comment and if not you’re a bad person and violating some kind of unwritten contract of fandom.” I’m saying, “please comment, because it’s really discouraging to fan fiction writers—who are not being paid for their time and effort—to write a story and get no encouragement to do so again.”
This!
“please comment, because it’s really discouraging to fan fiction writers—who are not being paid for their time and effort—to write a story and get no encouragement to do so again.”
I teared up at:
“If you have consumed what I have labored and invested in to create and if you have found any enjoyment in it, please tell me, so that I can recharge enough to do this again.”
You have no idea how draining it is (sometimes cathartically, and sometimes not) to produce content if you’ve never done it.
I am really new to fan fiction. And even newer to writing fan fiction (which I haven't been doing lately because I am working an ungodly amount of overtime recently).
That being said, bless @tsarinastorm for the labor of love, gift of time, and stress in producing something I enjoy reading. I am behind on several chapters, but somewhat intentionally because 1. I am working a lot but also 2. I prefer reading several chapters at once.
Even though it appears "free," I know it isn't. I don't say enough how much I appreciate everything that goes into a single piece of writing. ❤️
May the 10 of Pentacles bless your account with more money than you can spend. 💵✨

So I reblogged this exactly a week ago because I thought it was funny and uh lo and behold, a family friend wrote me a big ol’ check just to help me out of a tough financial spot AND my bank refunded me $32 for fees they’d originally taken out. SO UH YEAH. Reblogging this again in hopes that it brings equally good fortune to my followers.

Hey so friendly reminder about voting and elections that I haven’t seen going around yet but is SUPER IMPORTANT.
Watch what you wear and say while you’re waiting in line for the voting booth/at the polls. It is against federal law to do anything that might be considered campaigning once you’re there, and since we know that voter suppression is the name of the game this election, there will be people looking for ANY reason to remove you from the polling place. And they will nitpick. You have a shirt with a artistic picture of donkey on it? You’re visibly supporting the Democrats, you’re disqualified from voting. Want to wear a Black Lives Matter shirt? Not there you don’t. They’ll call it intimidation and kick you out. Pins, buttons, stickers, none of it. Wear the most bland, plain clothes you can imagine.
And then keep your mouth shut. Even the slightest hint of discussion about which candidate you’re voting for can get used against you. Don’t assume the people around you are safe to discuss it with. You might be overheard. There WILL people watching for these things, hoping to get rid of anyone they can. Voter suppression isn’t just about making registration impossible. It happens at the polling stations too. Be smart, be bland, be quiet, and make sure your vote gets in.
Also- and I have seen this mentioned but it bears repeating- DO NOT TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR BALLOT. EVER. It’ll also disqualify your vote. Take a selfie when you’re out of their with your fun little sticker.
This is some truth laid down right here boy.
Millennials have essentially been forced into a perpetual teenagerhood by socioeconomic circumstance, we desperately want to grow up, and we’re worried that we’re running out of time to do so
!!!!
Pro tip: When a student comes out to you, wear your Super Subtle Solidarity Outfit the next class period.
You can get the collar pin here!:

In the last 3 hours I’ve had two students stop me while I was running errands on campus to say, very purposefully and with a lot of eye contact, that they liked my collar pin. At which point I noted that I got it on Etsy and the seller made all sorts of neat pins will all sorts of different pride flags on them. And then they immediately did that full body “oh good we’re on the same page” exhale and the conversations continued in a much less cloak-and-dagger fashion.😂
I needed this story after the week I have had. <3
