マイ Vocab List
Today I present to you: a bunch of wasei (Japanese-made) words that all share the same prefix マイ ‘my’.
マイペース (‘my pace’) doing things at one’s own pace; doing things one’s own way
僕は、マイペースなやつとよく言われる。I’m often told that I do things at my own pace.
マイブーム (‘my boom’) one’s latest hobby, current obsession, craze
私の最近のマイブーム？じゃあ、３ｄモデリング、かも… My latest fad? Well, 3d modeling I guess.
マイカー (‘my car’) privately owned car
友達はマイカーを買うつもりだ。My friend’s going to buy a car of their own. (i.e. not my car)
マイホーム (‘my home’) one’s own house
実家を出て、マイホームで猫と一人暮らしする夢を見る。I dream of leaving my parents and living in my own house with a cat.
マイバッグ (‘my bag’) reusable shopping bag aka エコバッグ eco bag
今日はマイバッグ忘れた、 そして帰り道の途中でレジ袋が破れてしまった。本当に運悪いな。I forgot my shopper today, and then plastic bag got torn on my way home. Really unlucky.
マイ箸 (‘my chopsticks’) washable chopsticks carried in a case
マイボトル (‘my bottle’) personal use bottle or flask
マイナンバー (‘my number’) personal ID number
マイページ (‘my page’) one’s profile page
Speaking of マイページ, you’re likely to see マイ a lot while using Japanese websites and apps that require registration. マイポイント ‘my points’, マイリスト ‘my list’, マイ本棚 ‘my bookshelf’ and the like.
Conclusion: In English, ‘my’ is first-person possessive pronoun, but in Japanese it lost its possessiveness and came to mean ‘one’s own, personal’.
英語では一人称の「私の」であるが、日本では人称に関係なく「所有者である自分自身の」の意味になる。英語でいうと“He drives my car.”と“He drives his own car.”の相違である。(☓)
