Today I learned that Tigers and Magpies together in a painting (Hojak-do) was a Korean folk art way to poke fun at the aristocracy during the Joseon period. A folktale tells of a tiger (an animal of power and nobility, often used as a symbol by the ruling class) who was trapped in a mud puddle, and freed by a passing woodsman. Ungratefully, once he was free, the tiger decided to eat the woodsman. The woodsman asked nearby trees and animals to judge if this was fair or not, but they replied that tigers eat people, so it was fair game. However, a magpie (messenger of good news, and all around clever corvid) asked if the whole scenario could be re-enacted again for accuracy's sake. When the tiger stuck himself back in the mud again, the woodsman was free to escape.

Thus, we have a tale of a Clever Magpie and a Dumb Tiger, which is why Ghost Tiger here is dumb as an orange tabby, and Ghost Magpie keeps stealing his hat.
