“people in the past had such high hopes for us, they thought we were gonna vacation on the moon” fuck that!! they thought automation was gonna automate so much work that we’d all work 20 hour weeks like our ancestors used to! they knew we’d all be 5x more productive, which they naturally thought meant we’d be working less not more!  they thought the time & profits created by mechanical production would be distributed among the workers and we’d all share in the profits!!! they predicted our jobs would be replace by machines and they were right, they just assumed humanity as a whole would benefit instead of just a select few!!! and it shoulda!!!!

#more jobs SHOULD be done by machines and society as a WHOLE should benefit from the saved labor  #instead it’s just a tiny portion of humanity who now owns both the machines AND the people  #fuck that!!!

like it feels Good to look in the mirror and say Wow i feel pretty, it’s a nice moment and i’m not condemning it, but it’s a tenuous position. if you position yourself to feel good about being pretty, you’re still vulnerable to Ugly, and pretty is not a sustainable state. no matter how far you extend the concept of beauty, it’s still based in rules established by societal standards that realistically one cannot be perfectly held up to.

This used to be called “Auto Shop” and “Home Economics,” subjects which were included in nearly every high school curriculum up until the 1980s. Auto maintenance, budget management, sewing skills, cooking, and other basic Adulting skills were actually taught in classroom settings. But suddenly all that money got funneled away to sports and graduation requirements shifted toward standardized tests because those were somehow more? important? than life skills? and the home ec and shop classes were no longer taught, even as electives. We’ve been steadily losing arts classes for similar reasons.

And so students leave school with a thorough grounding in football and calculus, but having no idea how to sew on a button or change a tire. 

Petition to bring back these classes in every single middle and high school in the country.

Like most things that went wrong in the 80s, this is due to Reagan. He signed the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act into law which allowed “Job Creators” to control our educational system.

If it can’t help the Boug make a buck from you, it no longer gets taught.

i was thinking abt that earlier bc my coworker said "so birds of prey doesn't look very good" and i said "i don't care if it's the most trash ass movie ever made, i'm excited and i'm GONNA watch it!" he said "what, just because they're women" and i said "uh. yeah."

especially in genres, women are held to a weirdly high standard. there are like eight fucking movies where tom cruise plays himself in ridiculous high-stakes spy settings and no one bitches that they're unrealistic or stupid or whatever but margot robbie does it once and suddenly it's all about the integrity of the art.
