Every year Derek Landy releases the 756th Skulduggery Pleasant book and every year I go, wracked with embarrassment, to the children's section of my local bookstore to buy it and it's usually terrible and great all at the same time and I think about these characters for about a month and then I forget they exist again. I adore the way Project Hail Mary has exploded in popularity since the movie's release, and I really adore how reading Grace as aroace is so commonly embraced among the fandom. It feels like such a breath of fresh air.

Now, obviously platonic relationships aren't a rarity in fiction; buddy comedies and sit-coms about a wacky gang of friends are entire genres of their own. But what's rare is those platonic relationships being treated as genuinely equal to romantic relationships. Friends who raise kids together; who live together without separating when one gets a romantic partner; who plan their lives and careers together. Friends to whom the other is and always will be the number one priority. Having Project Hail Mary end on Grace choosing not to return to Earth but to stay with his new alien buddy on a planet where he's the only human, meaning a romantic or sexual relationship will be forever out of his reach, and yet he's not only content but happy, feels revolutionary to me.

I tend to really latch on to stories with these sorts of dynamics: Malevolent's focus on two people moving heaven and earth to stay together and become utterly intrinsic parts of each other because they're literally in the same body, yet there is no romance between them. Joan and Sherlock in Elementary slowly figuring out how to live together rather than alone or with a romantic partner, and how to raise a child in their shared household. The Skulduggery Pleasant books having the main character start dating as she gets older, but outright stating that the boyfriend is always going to play second fiddle to her detective partner, because those two are unhinged about each other in a much deeper way. Split Fiction having two leads who save each other in every way that counts and see the very ugliest and most broken parts of each other and come out the other side as best friends who build a career together. The Murderbot books having its lead dragged kicking and screaming into a loving friendships of deep importance without romance ever being an expectation. This is my bread and butter.

I've always really enjoyed fight scenes in Skulduggery Pleasant because of how they're written. It feels frantic and fast-paced, like there's too happening much for your mind to catch up. You can feel the characters scrabbling to get a grip on the situation and try to gain the upper hand. Another and another and another thing happens and they've just gotta try keepnit together and protect themselves.

I love when fights begin with sentences like "She went to open the door for X, and Y stared down at her and kicked her" because yk it just shows the complete unexpectedness and suddeness of what's happening, and the reader has to get their bearings along with the characters.

I'm not wording this super well but yeaah. It's cool

A headcanon of mine is Skulduggery has a Twitter account but he only uses it like twice a year when Valkyrie will tell him about something and he will write a post specifically to make people really mad and change the discourse into an unpredictable direction just so he can laugh about it.

The audiobook has been borrowed, the road trip tomorrow is 7 1/2 hours, and the brainworms are starving. Skulduggery is already my fave. Such an icon rolling up to the function in that getup.
