moss mfriday #3: Glacier Mice
That's right - it's glacier mice. One of my favorite things maybe on the entire planet. Let's talk about these freaky fuzzy little rats!!
Glacier mice are balls of moss that live in large herds like this in a few select glaciers. They are moss all the way through, with a center consisting of dead moss matter, implying that they begin as small growths of moss and simply accumulate over time, like snowballs. However, their outside surface is alive and well on all sides. Glacier mice have been observed, through tagging and tracking, to roll across the glacier like a majestic herd of wildebeest, exposing all of their sides to the sunlight. They trundle along at a pace of about 2.5 cm per day. That's 30 feet in a year! They're really schmovin'! Certainly further than most mosses can claim to travel.
What's really exciting, though, is that they all move in the same direction, and we're not sure why or how. Scientists experimented to try and attribute their coordinated behavior to wind, sunlight, and the direction that their grazing ground slopes, but to no avail. They speed up, slow down, and change direction in unison, based on some mysterious moss code that we haven't cracked yet.

We have figured out how they roll, though - while the moss ball sits on the ice, it insulates the ice directly underneath it, protecting it from melting. This forms a little pillar of ice that the moss eventually rolls off of. The insulating power of glacier mice also gives it the wonderful ability to host all kinds of microorganisms that otherwise wouldn't survive the glacier's harsh conditions, and their ability to move makes it possible for microorganisms to spread from one habitable spot to another. They're like a bunch of little tardigrade passenger ships, braving the dangerous glacier to go where no water bear has gone before!!
Glacier mice have been found to consist of several moss species, most of which must reproduce asexually in order to survive in the dry climate. They've been observed to live for at least six years, but are projected to live much, much longer. I love them. So much. I hope they know that I love them!! I LOVE THEM!!!!

Oh.... the glacier mice...
This is really clever. I wonder how long it took her to find all of these.

I like it when my friends make art shout out to friends making art
I used to draw these little dragons that I call ChibiRyuu. Usually I draw them as characters, but this is just a generic one to see how I wanted to update their design. I'd like to start making them again!
I'll make a post at a later time with more details, like how I choose colors and how I alter their designs to match the character.

I have finally joined the mid-to-late 2000s and have a cellphone.
Except it is an even shittier version of the 00s because there is so much gen ai bullshit on this thing.

I think my favorite "what's wrong with your cat" cat is the oriental shorthair
Their big stupid ears, their weird honking meows, legs made more for wading birds than stealth predators.....they're like the weird elves of the cat world
Like look at this thing, what even is it
[True crime podcast voice] her family remember her as a mean and unpleasant person who darkened up a room. She hated going to church, despised children and the elderly, and never answered her phone
oh my goddd. I thought it was great from the beginning but it only gets better
i can’t stop watching this
First thing you see after you zoom in is how you die
How you dying 👀
Observations and complements I have received a large number of times the past month while in hospital.
"You have really good veins" Thanks, I grew them myself.
"You're really tall" Almost only said by female staff. I'm 5'10. Most of the male staff have been at least 6'2''.
"You have long legs" I am now nervous that my legs are disproportional to the rest of me. Do I have shoujo legs?
"You are a very quiet/easy patient" Thanks, my social anxiety prevents me from asking for anything but the bare minimum, sometimes not even that.
"You are very sweet" Am I? Like I feel like all I have really done is say thank you and apologize, very basic stuff. Do most other patients not do that? Is the bar that low?

My grandfather and my godfather (a beloved neighbor and dear family friend) had a long standing bet- for one dollar- about who would die first. Both of them being slightly pessimistic (in the funny way), they both insisted that they themselves would be the first to die. Any time my grandfather had a health scare, he’d gleefully call up my godfather to boast that he’d be passing “any day now” and he was sure to win the bet. It was a big family joke and they were always amiably sparring and comparing notes about who was in worse shape, medically speaking.
When my grandfather was in hospice care dying of liver cancer, my godfather was quite ill also. It took him great effort to make the journey to see his dying friend. As he came into the room, supported by a family member, he shuffled to my grandpa’s bedside and silently handed him a dollar bill. He was ceding his loss of the bet, as they both knew who was going first. My grandpa had been in quite bad shape for a while and was no longer able to speak but let me tell you he snatched that dollar with unexpected strength and literally laughed aloud. He knew exactly what the gesture meant and he couldn’t help but find the humor within the grief. It was the last time any of us heard my grandpa laugh, as he passed shortly after.
When I talk about my appreciation for “dark humor” I’m not so much thinking about edgy jokes, but rather the human instinct to somehow, impossibly, both find and appreciate the absurdity that is so often folded into the profound grief of life and death. When I tell this story I think it kind of perturbs people sometimes, but it’s honestly one of my favorite memories about two men I really deeply admired. I could never hope for anything more than for my loved ones to remember me laughing until the very end, and taking joy in a little joke as one of my final acts.
