Her mother, Athena Luna is a former Thriller Bark pirate. She was seen as too reckless and too independent, so her departure from the crew was not surprising.
Her father, Sydgraves Ari is a former marine. He is seen as a traitor in the eyes of not only the Marines but the world government as well.
-Ari was tasked to capture the thriller bark Pirates, and found a way to capture Luna in an attempt to lure the rest of the thriller bar Pirates to the marines. When this didnāt work the way they planned, Ari decided to transport Luna to Impel Down. On the way, they ended up getting to know each other realizing they both are aiming for the same thing. Freedom and independence. Ari starts to question why heās even serving as a marine, and Luna starts to question why she hadnāt decided to follow her heart long ago.
-After falling in love with each other, Luna left the thriller bark Pirates and Ari left the Marines to form their own pirate crew, The Moon Pirates. This pirate crew decided to hide in plain sight, protecting a remote island in exchange for resources.
-Luna entrusted Syd to her former crewmate Varian, asking him to find her a better family, as it was too dangerous for her to be raised on a pirate ship at sea. He was supposed to find people to raise Syd, but instead raised her himself under his horrible control.ļæ¼
