Piper McLean used to daydream about having blue eyes and blonde hair and pale skin. She used to imagine herself looking just like the prettiest girls she ever saw in media, the dainty princesses in her fairytale books and the heroines in the movies her dad acted in. She used to look in the bathroom mirror for hours, imagining herself with the pouty lips and slim noses and sharp cheekbones of the models she saw in fashion magazines. She looked up the costs of every single surgery she could imagine, wondering when her dad would let her get one done.

Piper McLean used to daydream about being white.

She cut her own hair using a random pair of scissors she found and she threw out all the fashion magazines in the house and she filled her wardrobe with secondhand flannel shirts and ill-fitting jeans, all in an attempt to break away from the mindset she’d had almost her entire life. She trained herself to compliment something about her face every time she looked in the mirror and her pretty white classmates rolled their eyes and called her vain when she did it in the school bathroom but they didn’t get it.

She started finding beauty in things like her soft cheeks and the way that her eyebrows never grow in the same way and the fuzz on her upper lip that she can never quite hide. She snorts when she laughs and she’s always been embarrassed about that but she did it in front of a cute girl once and the girl looked her and said “wow, you have a beautiful laugh” and she thinks of that every time she tries to choke down her giggles. She has tiny scars on her nose from when she tried to give herself a piercing and it came out lopsided and sometimes she traces them and wonders how she could have ever wanted to be anything other than what she is.

When she was claimed, she got a new outfit but her face and hair stayed the same because no one understands what it means to learn how to love yourself more than a goddess who is only ever defined by how beautiful others find her.
