Is how this light may be made.

I can’t eat that

Following on from this post on allergies, I thought I’d talk about the use of 食べられる・食べられない. 

お寿司は食べられる？ おすし　は　たべられる？

If someone asks you this in Japan, they’re asking about your personal preference towards eating sushi, not if you are actually incapable of eating sushi for a medical/ethical reason. If you don’t eat sushi due to personal preference, you could respond with 食べられない, but if you absolutely cannot eat fish in any circumstance then you need to follow your response up with an explanation. In my case, I’m allergic to fish so I would say 「魚アレルギーで食べられない。」.

In summary, if you have dietary restrictions and you order some food, make sure you state the particular reason you can’t eat something. If you just use 「Xは食べられない」then they may assume it’s just a personal preference and not be so careful with food preparations etc.
