‼️A few disclaimers/personal opinions that I feel the need to share because of being (sadly) very present in online fandom spaces ‼️
.
- very anti "cancelling" authors - unless, obviously, they're straight up criminals (like Neil Gaiman) or hold bigoted views (like J.K. Rowling)-.
With "cancelling" I mean the tendency in (some) online fandom space to over-scrutinize authors/artists in order to see if they're "unproblematic" and agree with you in every moral aspect, so that you can have a good conscience while engaging with their works.
- more or less a believer in Death of the author and Reception Theory (though more the latter)
- very anti parasocial relationships with any celebrities and/or artists (they seem to be interchangeable at this point).
- strong supporter of thoughtful reviews instead of silly ones (being honest about why you liked/disliked a work of art makes u cooler, not cringe)
- lover of all art mediums + lover of the artifice of art
- lover of dubbed movies, and translation in general
- Liking bad characters does not make you a bad person (interpret this as you like).
Morally corrupt characters need to exist in fiction. I believe it is your responsibility as an adult reader/audience to not have a parasocial relationship with them (crazy that this needs to be said, but we're on tumblr, so just in case). Liking something in art, but especially characters, should not mean getting emotionally attached to them to the point of parasocial relationships. They are bad, they are not real, they are constructed for the purpose of telling a story that a real person (the author) felt the need to share. You should be able to examine if they meet their purpose or not. You should not focus on whether YOU agree with them morally.
- Depicting something ≠ endorsing it, but sometimes it is. It's your job as the reader to be able to distinguish between the two
- Very against the following: fandom misogyny, fandom racism, erasing women in favor of a gay male (usually white) ship, fetishizing stuff like SA/rape/incest, etc, with the excuse of equating all that to something inherently queer. "Taboo" topics are important to explore, but let's be careful, idk.
- very anti-censorship (especially on A03), but also anti-porn. again, interpret this as you like (bearing in mind what I said about fandom misogyny, rape fetishizing, cp, etc etc).
- firmly supporter of fanfiction of all sorts, but also of the belief that writers who want to write books eventually, should read books also, not just fics
- firm believer that the collective perception of a Story does not define it (especially in the era of social media). Just read the book/watch the movie and come to your own conclusions!
- Creating art is always better than not creating anything at all. Even if what you write is "tumblr purple prose", even if what you draw is anatomically incorrect or weird, or blatantly self-indulgent. All art is self-indulgent to some extent. You need to start making something to be able to improve it. Cringe is not real if you are above 15 years old. The best art you make will always be on the paper, not on your head. Express yourself, accept constructive criticism, get better at what fulfills you, and most importantly, get it out there.
- I don't believe in the use of AI to "help" you through the creative process (neither writing, nor drawing, nor in film-making). The creative process is hard, and that's what makes it cool. What you're creating is not only the art piece, but also yourself, along the way. Do not let a machine replace your self-expression.
- Firm believer in fandom etiquette/online etiquette in general ( aka. not giving too personal data here, treating people like they were strangers [because they are]/with respect, etc etc. yknow, just basic manners).
.
My tag #fandom pretty much some all of this up, but just in case, I want to attach some pictures of people who worded this way better than me, that I think sum up my take in fandom spaces pretty well. So you get an idea and can block me if you disagree!
CW: gore/body horror/explicit stuff
// I reblog body horror/gore/otherwise sensitive stuff sometimes (usually tagged as such). If they're not tagged with a "tw: gore/body horror/blood" , they're under #🔪 , or #🩸. (Not just pictures, but quotes are included. It's mostly just quotes, actually).
