I have some thoughts regarding the submarine lost in the bottom of the ocean somewhere with billionaire tourists trapped inside. Part of me completely understands that they are people and being trapped in such a tiny space in what I am assuming is complete darkness, is incredibly terrifying and an all around awful way to go.

But when put into context my empathy wavers. They knew the submarine was shady, not up to code, with a CEO that hates safety regulations. And although I send my condolences, it never seems to amaze me how the media will zone in on the lives of the absurdly wealthy and paint this narrative of victimhood for these people.

That same grace is not provided to anyone else. That grace was not provided to all those lives lost in a ship wreck off the coast of Greece recently; that grace was not provided to black and brown people who fall victim to police brutality every year; that same grace is not provided to the migrants who cross treacherous borders in order to build a better life; that same grace is not provided to the indigenous women and children that go missing every year; that same grace is not provided to the women, children, and men who suffer sexual violence at the hands of people they thought they could trust.

It’s an “all for me none for thee,” attitude, and it’s tearing us all apart.

Watch this video if you are wondering why superhero movies and movies in general have been sucking ass lately. They are no longer creative endeavors and just one large ad. Movies need to be as marketable as possible to shill out more bullshit like figures and outfits and gadgets and fidget spinners with Dr Strange’s face on it. It’s all executive marketing. The movie just needs to have enough of a lukewarm plot to somewhat entertain an audience for 2 hours and the next thing you know, companies and corporations are bidding for some BS IP with a 6% rotten tomato score but hey it had one cute, easily marketable character and now its face is plastered on every mug.

i know beginner artists are annoyed at the word ‘practice’ being thrown at them by every other artist but i honestly think some of you need to understand the harsh truth. practice is really the only way to improve your art. there are no shortcuts, no tips, no nothing that can turn you into that artist you wanna be. i’m still learning but i knew that frustration well a few months ago. but i had to learn the hard way that i wasn’t going anywhere if i didn’t work. you 👏will👏not👏get👏better👏with👏out👏practice👏 !!!! you will not magically turn into a ‘good’ artist overnight. start working. look up references. study anatomy. practice poses and expressions. PRACTISE

I’m gonna level with you, because those who are There and Going There know something that those who Aren’t and Feel Stuck don’t:

Drawing all the time won’t make you better. You have to have directed practice. You have to learn to draw from refs and break down photos into shapes and gesture and pay attention and experiment and learn from other artists in the field.

When you say “practice” you mean “study and apply.” But when you say “practice” many people hear “draw more.” There is, in fact, a quantity over quality bonus, but it only goes so far if you’re not actively learning and studying.

I’m saying this so that if any of my followers feel hopeless when they hear “practice more,” maybe this will help them see it in a new light.

And honestly, take breaks. I don't mean a few hours or so. Take a few days, weeks even. There have been times where I have gotten frustrated with pieces, my mind is too cluttered, I can't focus, and I simply cannot draw. Guess what? I learned that it's ok to not draw every. Single. Day. You will feel uninspired and lost. That's ok! You can't draw everyday? That's ok. Art isn't a race. Even the industry's top contenders run into road blocks. The best time to pick that pencil/stylus/brush up is when you have successfully decluttered your mind. I can't tell you how many times I've taken a hiatus from drawing only to come back a few days(or weeks) later with a new perspective. Suddenly that thing I couldn't draw is much easier to put on paper. Sometimes the best way to push forward is to take a step back.
