the creeping allure of becoming a jax defense warrior
like where are the crusades against caine? most of the show directs us to understand his abuse of the other characters as silly cartoon antics, not very dissimilar to how jax's abuse of the other characters is treated
of course part of the story is about the characters coming to accept their home as a real world with real emotional stakes, but I don't think it directs us to retroactively understand all the silly cartoon violence as real horrific abuse, or else caine would have been let off the hook far too easily. it seems very selective to treat the transfem character's cartoon violence so differently, even despite the other differences between her and caine as characters
it's not that I think nothing jax did was serious or awful or abusive, obviously not. she drove a friend to suicide. but I don't think putting ragatha in a mcdonalds fryer or shooting rhinoceros gangle while the words "nice shot" appear onscreen like a video game should be evaluated the same way. get serious
the argument of holding caine to different standards because he's a computer program doesn't work for me. the finale does a lot to deconstruct the distinction between him and the other characters
it begins with the other characters finding out they are not humans controlling avatars waiting to eventually return to humanity, they are computer programs with no tether to their "human" counterparts. the finale ends with caine, a character we have considered "nonhuman" all this time, demonstrating empathy and a capacity for growth regardless. the finale very much works to challenge our assumptions about the differences between the "human" and "nonhuman" characters. it tells us our "human" characters are not human in the corporeal sense, but it concludes that they are human in the emotional sense. it affirms their value and their individuality despite their "inhumanity"
jax explicitly believes in the middle of the series that she and the others are no longer human, that they're just cartoon characters. she essentially believes they're all the same things as caine, and in accordance with that belief she acts very similarly to caine (though for jax this belief is in part a protective shell around her guilt and dysphoria. it's dissociation. this dissociation is, however, enabled by her environment being literally a video game)
the finale literally makes the case that there is not a significant "human" vs "inhuman" moral difference between jax and caine. jax was right that they're all inhuman, but she was wrong in deciding that that meant they were any less real in an emotional or moral sense
a trans woman buys into her dehumanization and so acts inhuman, and then the narrative tells us it doesn't even matter if she was "human," she was a person who can be both morally judged and empathized with and loved regardless. what else do you think a trans woman who survived the dehumanization that is conversion therapy is going to write about?
like. its pretty god damn hard not to draw a direct line between the way people have reacted to jax and callout culture and the unpersoning of "problematic" transfems. if you are upset that someone still reaches out to Jax, that she's still treated with human dignity, that her story was heard and her pain acknowledged, then it seems very very likely to me that once you decide that a real person- especially, say, a transfem- is An Abuser, that person does not deserve peace, friends, or dignity. that you are full throat willing to misgender a trans woman once your chest is filled with righteous indignation. the refusal to sympathise with a problematic tranny- the anger at being asked to! we see that. and we wonder how little it takes for you to turn that on us.
i was talking about this on my server earlier but i really think "cozy" is one of the worst genre labels out there in the gaming space. like people dunk on the terms "metroidvania" and "first person shooter" a lot for being uncreative or limiting but at least those are like... falsifiable descriptors. you can look at a game and go "yeah this game's mechanics and core gameplay loop generally operate like metroid/castlevania" or "yeah this game primarily uses a first person camera paired with some sort of projectile weapon" so i don't think they're completely useless. but "cozy" is just nonsense. fully subjective. i see a lot of games popularly labeled as "cozy" that share almost zero mechanical features between them and don't even always match in tone or aesthetic. hearing a game described as "cozy" doesn't tell you anything about what to expect as a player beyond maybe giving you a sort of forewarning about the fanbase and their discomfort tolerance. "cozy" is not a quantifiable metric. like imagine if someone offered to buy you takeout and asked you what kind of food you'd like and you told them fully unironically, and with no further elaboration, "i want to get yummy food." that's what hearing "cozy games" sounds like to me

something that i find interesting about independent animation nowadays is that if you don't have studio/streamer backing, you have to release your work yourself on the internet, but you have to do it for free on the internet because virtually nobody is going to be willing to accept a paywall just for one original show, so what you have to do in order to make any money off of it is make all of your money from merchandising, but then this means that you show must be merchandisable and have very toyetic character designs that translate easily to plushies and whatnot, but then you also need to cater your show to people who are disproportionately inclined to buy merchandise like that in the first place so that your sales can be enough to sustain you, which means that even if you want to communicate complex or difficult ideas in your work, your independent animation project must attract (at least on a first impression) and retain viewers who are both very consumerist and very capable of rabid passion, which unfortunately has a single-circle shaped venn diagram with a lot of the most toxic fandom tendencies known to man, and this explains a lot of things about independent animation and its fandoms nowadays I think

Tbh there is an overabundance of media about a nonhuman creature's deep desire and journey to become human, and so very few of the opposite
Many of those movies/shows are very good and I like them but the whole time I'm feeling like it's tragic in a way. The thought of a creature giving up its otherness to assimilate into humanity is really fuckin sad to me. Or a human getting the chance to be something else freaking out and rejecting it.
Just makes me feel all the more alienated, y'know. Like "damn why don't I relate to this allegedly universal enthusiasm for being human" and "why is the desire to be anything else always wrong"
I want more stuff where a human chooses to stop being human, and this is portrayed as a reasonable choice, and the person is happy as a result.
I haven't watched the tadc finale yet. I've heard that Jax being trans is "debatable" or "open to interpretation" but based on the way the fandom is switching up on Jax I'm guessing it's less ambiguous than people are letting on.
