Our guest today is Tim Smith who has been living musical theatre and singing for his entire life. He’s currently the Associate Musical Director on The Lion King and has worked on over 30 musicals including Mamma Mia, Billy Elliot and Legally Blonde. He’s an expert when it comes to singing. He’s the Artistic Director of Vocal Alchemy and his vocal workshops have been conducted throughout the globe. Today he’s going to be sharing with us his many tips and strategies for creating a studio with strong musical theatre and singing streams.

This time, though, Little Orphan Annie is back with a difference: Quvenzhane Wallis is playing an African-American orphan in an ethnically diverse, up-to-date world. And that got us thinking about other instances where producers have breathed fresh life into familiar shows by making them dance to a new beat.

In the late 1960s, after 1,500 performances, Broadway’s Hello Dolly! was still arguably “glowin’” and “crowin’” but was no longer “goin’ strong.” Carol Channing had long since departed with a touring company. And her first three replacements on the Great White Way — Ginger Rogers, Bette Grable and Martha Raye — had been playing to ever-diminishing crowds. Newer shows like Man of La Mancha and Cabaret were making Dolly seem old hat.

Then producer David Merrick figured out how to make Dolly the freshest face on the block. He hired not just a new star, but a whole new cast. A whole new black cast, at the height of the civil rights movement — Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway, even a youngster named Morgan Freeman making his Broadway debut — and suddenly, his tired old warhorse looked new again.

Mark Coles Smith is an Indigenous actor from Broome. He always knew he was an actor and from his first role in Ocean Star, his future from then on was shining bright. Coles carries a certificate in Aboriginal Theatre from WAAPA and a Bachelor in Indigenous Studies. In 2007 he won the Yvonne Cohen Award from the VCA Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts. Then, in 2008, he took out a grant from ScreenWest for the short film Layoordoo, which he wrote, co-produced and directed, while also featuring in a supporting role. Layoordoo screened at Toronto’s ImagiNATIVE Film Festival. In addition to all of this, he has taken roles in The Gods of Wheat Street (ABC), Modern Family (ABC), Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (ABC) and Blue Heelers (Southern Star).
