i do think we need to detach hygiene from value as a person. as someone who has dealt with not being able to shower or brush my teeth due to depression and executive dysfunction, it usually is not a choice. sometimes there are situations in which you CANNOT care for yourself properly and that shouldnât mean you can now be stripped of your worth. physically disabled people who have trouble with hygiene i love you, mentally ill people who have trouble with hygiene i love you, neurodivergent people who struggle with hygiene i love you, people without access to adequate hygiene products i love you. itâs going to be ok
while I do acknowledge data centers are putting strain on a lot of very vulnerable communities it's also important to note that this too is a product of finance capital planning for infinite growth and disregarding safety to do so. AI itself can be run economically (in terms of power) and that much has been demonstrated repeatedly but it's not, because like every other industry, it's being controlled by and for capital, competitively, with wanton waste and destruction as a result. the harm is not stored in the math, nor even data centers themselves, nor queries, it's entirely preventable, and that's worse
The reason why a lot of bigotry, particularly racism, hangs around for generation after generation is because there are many ppl that believe there are âpositiveâ and/or âneutralâ stereotypes. For example, there are those that believe that all Asian people (specifically Chinese people) excel at mathematics. They see this as an overall positive thing to think about them, so they donât work to dismantle that belief and thus donât see the harmful consequences of such a notion. And if you can believe that all Asians are good at math, then you can believe all Latinos are passionate lovers, and you can believe that all Black men have big dicks and all Black women have high sex drives, so on and so forth. If you can believe that any group of people have an inherent âpositiveâ quality to them that makes them that, then you can believe in neutral stereotypes and then, negative ones. Though this can occur on a lower subconscious level, the framework for prejudice is there.
