easy to miss that one of the reasons maternal mortality is diminished so extremely by modern medicine is that modern medicine makes it so much more possible to identify the pregnancies that will die and take you with them, or are otherwise unacceptably high risk. and then discontinue those ones safely, before it's too late.

thought about this because it's so frustrating when people argue that 'dying in childbirth' is a historical sort of event that doesn't happen nowadays (false) and therefore is irrelevant to the legal status of abortion, since it's not a real danger.

except it super is, and i think a lot of people haven't noticed that this argument in addition to simply being incorrect is basically the same as when people say we don't need vaccines for deadly diseases because no one gets those now anyway.

why do men have to disagree without reason whenever a woman is talking about anything related to philosophy?

making this post because of a comment under a video where a woman was talking about an increase in cruel behavior online (and in real life) when people feel they lack personal power. i've made similar observations on my own blog especially regarding conservative politics. it is true that when someone feels they lack personal power, especially if it is power they felt entitled to (like in cases of violence motivated by aggrieved entitlement), they will do what they can to punch down.

there's no way he would say this if a man was making the exact same argument. what the fuck is the point? are we living in a world where human behavior can all be traced to one thing and any other factor brought up is irrelevant? if I was op I would be fuming but I also have narcissistic tendencies so it could be a complete overreaction #whatever #whatdoyouthink

If you’re uncertain, most state universities have soil testing labs that offer cheap, easily understood soil tests that can tell you for sure whether you’ve got lead, arsenic, etc. in your soils.

This is a good thing to note, (also sunflowers are very pretty and easy to grow when you’re first learnign how to garden) but also searching “(nearest university) Extension” and “(your county) Extension” is GREAT because there’s ALL KINDS of cool services out there if you want to get into growing your own food or helping the local enviornment or installing solar panels on your house or buying livestock or- There’s a lot, it’s AWESOME, it’s usually stunningly low-cost and it’s veyr, very solarpunk so I encourage all of you to take a gander at the programs offered.

Some also offer classes! They’re taxpayer funded, so that means the wealthy ones can offer tons of resources. If you can’t find much going on in your state, nearby states may also have excellent info that can apply to your area. Some of the famous heavyweights are Cornell / New York and UC Davis / California, tons of research, plant breeding programs, and all around useful info coming outta those places.

As a botanist I’m contractually obligated to add this any time I see posts about phytoremediation–if you do this you CANNOT let the sunflowers/msuhrooms/etc decompose back into your garden. You cannot add them to your compost pile. That just puts the heavy metals right back into your soil!!!! You need to bag them up and dispose of them elsewhere–traditional landfill waste is probably going to be easiest for most people.

These plants ACCUMULATE metals. They do NOT break them down. You’re pulling them up from the ground and storing them in the plant tissue, so, don’t consume or compost that tissue afterwards.

just put it into perspective that excess deaths from covid are about the same as the hiv aids deaths at ~30 million. highlights how crazily infectious it is despite the fact that it took only 3 months or so to identify its mechanism and an entirely new type of accelerated vaccine regime was developed in a year. it was both mismanaged horrifyingly and we got really lucky.
