Sometimes I think about Finnick trying to befriend Katniss before the Quell and I lose my shit
The other rebels are like you need to subtly let her know you're on her side, so you go bet and turn your charm up to 11. Which would have maybe worked on anyone else but this is Katniss Everdeen we're talking about.
So now you're stuck doing increasingly ridiculous social gymnastics every time she's around and still by the time the night before the Games arrives the only thing she's convinced of about you is that you are going to try to fucking murder her
So you freak out, seek out Haymitch and basically go "hey what the fuck is wrong with your kid". And Haymitch just stares ahead for a second, nods, takes off his bracelet, says "wear this" and leaves. You fucking hate district 12
So you go okay. Breathing exercises. This is fine. Guess I'll have to save her life during the Games or sth maybe that'll do the trick. And when you see the Arena you cheer up for a sec bc you definitely have the advantage here she'll have to trust you right?
Wrong. She can fucking swim. SHE CAN FUCKING SWIM.
So now you're in the Cornucopia with no cards up your sleeve, no time left, and arguably the other deadliest tribute in that Arena pointing at you with a bow, and so you go "you know what, fuck it, I'm going to die anyways" and you show her the bracelet
AND IT FUCKING WORKS
Bear in mind Finnick had no first-hand experience on Katniss and Haymitch's bitch-to-bitch telepathy this was his first contact with it
Just saying lucky for the Rebellion this was Finnick and not me if I was in his place I would have killed her there and then just out of principle
We assume that Katniss doesn't convince everyone in the districts of the authenticity of her love for Peeta because Snow says so. Snow believes that convincing the districts will calm them down. But Snow, as characterized in the prequels, fundamentally does not understand love.
Katniss DOES convince most everyone in the districts. The only district people to question the love story are the other victors, because they alone understand how the Capitol's propaganda works, how stories are controlled and victors are forced to play their part.
But when Katniss visits District 8, everyone seems fully convinced. People assure Katniss that they know Peeta was just speaking under duress. They're so upset about Katniss "losing the baby" that one woman actually weeps over it. The everyday District citizens buy into it fully.
The issue is that Snow doesn't understand how powerful love is. Katniss and Peeta's act fuels the rebellion instead of tamping it because choosing love over violence is rebellious. Like when Katniss and Peeta hold hands and Haymitch calls it the perfect touch of rebellion, or when Katniss covers Rue with flowers, or when all the victors hold hands on interview night. Compassion, love, friendship between competitors, it's all in defiance to the Capitol's agenda.
Snow thought that the districts would hear, "I'm just a silly little harmless teenage girl doing impulsive things because I'm in love! How nice of the Capitol to let me keep my boyfriend!" Instead they heard, "My love gave me the courage to defy the Capitol." They heard, "My love held firm in the face of all the Capitol's power and cruelty. I refuse to kill him or even passively let him die." They heard, "The Capitol is not strong enough to corrupt a steadfast heart." And if the Capitol can't even overcome two teenagers' puppy love, it certainly can't overcome thousands of adults' love for their neighbors, children, and homes, or a unified people's passion for freedom and justice.
Snow underestimated love, and it was his downfall.
“When the war is over, if we’ve won, Peeta will be pardoned.” Dead silence. I feel Gale’s body tense. I guess I should have told him before, but I wasn’t sure how he’d respond. Not when it involved Peeta.
inspired by this
friends to lovers never had a bad track. “scared i’ll ruin what we have” SLAPS. “friendship cuddles while secretly dying inside” BANGER. “teasing each other and holding eye contact for a little too long” KILLS ME. and don’t even get me STARTED on “screaming i love you in the middle of a heated argument.”
reading a “there was only one bed fic” and the characters have decided to share the bed as long as they stay on their sides. i’m really glad they figured that whole mess out and am excited to read about them staying on their sides of the bed until morning^-^
Come on, Haymitch. Nobody decent ever wins the Games. Katniss Everdeen The Hunger Games (2012-2015)
Katniss: what a FUCKING manipulatior. he thinks he can use his BEAUTIFUL EYES and KIND PERSONALITY and SKILLS and FEMININE EYELASHES to woo people. But IM NOT FALLING FOR IT! he's so despicable. I'm not going to hold back in the games.
Peeta: if she dies I'm literally killing myself

guys is there a fic anyone is aware of or has written where 13 gets peeta and the capitol get katniss? I can't find one 😞
There's a great one where the capitol gets katniss and then wipes her memory back to the day before the reaping so when 13 rescues her like they did Peeta she doesn't even know who Peeta is. It's SO so so good. It's called I Wake With Your Memory Over Me by @mage-chocolate on ao3
I highly recommend the one above! If you are looking for more, @everlarkficquestions has a lot of great lists including this one: Katniss Hijacked/Captured.
honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before

Imagine the pure chaos of being a classmate of Katniss and Peeta’s and then watching them in the games. Delly mentions Katniss was admired and Peeta is said to be popular. So now these nice kids you’ve known for years took two days in each other’s close proximity to act weird.
The reserved girl who doesn’t even smile in town with either of her friends is laughing and kissing the boy. The charming guy is making fun of her scowl and saying he doesn’t mind if she sees him naked. He also airs out some of his family’s dirty laundry. They make a suicide pact. The girl has always tried for a stoic face but now she’s cried hysterically over the boy. They’re volunteering to die for each other. They’ve kissed for at least ten minutes on national television twice.
I’m sure the games have caused tributes to act different from their district impressions but I’m not sure if they ever revealed two people to be so weirdly intense about each other.
how do u view the scene in mj when katniss and gale are in her house and hes like 'you only kiss me when im in pain" because the common belief in the fandom is that he's being manipulative/ guilt trippy here but i just dont see it that way so idk. I feel like the fandom is so blinded by their dislike for gale they seem insistent on villianizing his every move, but I always just thought of this scene as gale being vulnerable and that line about waiting for her to choose as gale being in pain and wanting to be free/cut loose from his own feelings (also he literally almost died on that table so his emotion is understandable to me) He loves her and atp knows its not him, yet katniss still wont do it (which obviously dont blame her since a lots going on and gale is her best friend so she doesnt want to lose him) idk if i even completely agree with his conclusion about her kisses but thats just me. Maybe I am being a little too lenient to him here tho, so I would love your thoughts on this whole scene :)
Ahoy, Anon! Great question. I agree with you that it is more him being vulnerable with his feelings than intentionally manipulative. I'm not against leniency for the traumatized 19-year-old. He is communicating that he feels "like the man in the Hanging Tree. Still waiting for an answer." Her life has been a wreck the past year, and because they were so close, so has his. Not even counting the bombing. Before the 74th, he had become aware of his crush on her, was probably waiting for the right time to confess his feelings. And suddenly, she had to publically be with Peeta, and even in private, her feelings are as unclear to him as they are to herself, full of mixed signals. I don't blame him for wanting some clarity.
Context matters a lot in this scene. It is in Katniss's mansion kitchen, and he opens the conversation with, "This is where you kissed me," referring to the table where he had been lying for treatment after the whipping, zonked out on morphling. I'm not calling Gale the smoothest or most tactful person, just an honest one. Katniss did kiss him there, when he was in pain, when she thought he was unconscious and wouldn't remember. In that scene, he's about to start crying, and she explicitly does kiss him "to keep [the tears] from spilling over." He saw her kiss Peeta in the arena when he was in pain, too. The pattern he points out does exist, from his perspective. At most, the "Don't worry, Katniss. It'll pass," was a little passive aggressive.
In that kiss, he pulled away first. And that kiss can't stand alone, because I think the entire thing, especially Gale's abrasiveness, needs to be looked at in combination with their kisses in District 2. There, she's grieving Peeta and choosing Gale, kissing Gale "to make up for all the kisses I've withheld, because it doesn't matter anymore..." That part, to me, sounds like Katniss finding some freedom in kissing Gale, kissing someone and not having to worry about any strategy or performance. But then, "...and because I'm so desperately lonely I can't stand it," creates some doubt. Is kissing Gale her authentic expression of romantic freedom, or is she kissing him because he's available? It can be both ("and")! It can be complicated! But Katniss doesn't sound sure in her narration, and Gale can tell she's unsure. That's when he pulls back, stops her, and asks what's going on in her head. Because she doesn't know, he no longer wants to kiss her, doesn't want to kiss someone whose motivations are uncertain. Nothing wrong with that. I love him for that.
So, considering the full picture, the kitchen kiss was when Gale's emotions were heightened by painful memories, and he was a little passive-aggressive, but for the District 2 kisses, when he's more calm, he communicates more gently and clearly: he wants an answer, for her to be sure, and to not manipulate her. If it were his intention to manipulate her, he could have taken full advantage of her habit of kissing people in pain and her emotional confusion, but he very explicitly doesn't. How some people put him down for being slightly imperfect while doing everything to not take advantage of her is beyond me.
