"Are you hurt?" Sizhui asks anxiously, jumping off his sword to tun towards Lady Xuanyu.
"Nah," she says, wincing as she stresses. "Well, nothing important."
"You're bleeding!" Jingyi shouts at a really unnecessary pitch. He unsheathes his sword and points it at Song Lan. "What did you do?"
"Stop that," she scolds, knocking his sword down. "Go get Xiao Xingchen and the girl. He's probably really confused right now."
Song Lan's expression clears and he bows to her before flying off.
His father jerks as if to go after him and Lady Xuanyu calls out, "Leave him be! He's doing what I said."
Lan Wangji hesitates, but nods and finally descends to join them. He towers over Lady Xuanyu, looking down at her with a fierce glare that makes Sizhui cringe even though it's not directed towards him. "What happened?"
"Found Xiao Xingchen, found Xue Yang, Song Lan killed him," she says, not even so much as lowering her eyes. "Xue Yang, not Xiao Xingchen, obviously. Wasn't this guy supposed to be killed during the war or something? It was a little before my time, so to speak."
"Song Lan is unharmed and you are not," his father says, lifting a hand to press it against the sluggishly bleeding wound in her shoulder.
Lady Xuanyu hisses at the contact but doesn't pull away. "He's a more experienced cultivator. Give me a couple hours and they'll be all closed up."
It used to take days for Lady Xuanyu's golden core to heal anything more complicated than a paper cut. She's strengthened it to the point that what would have been weeks of healing is reduced to just a day.
"He should have protected you," Sizhui says stubbornly. He'd rather she didn't have to heal at all. "Why did you run off with him anyway?"
"Had a hunch and figured I'd be back before you noticed," she says. Jingyi sputters. "Also, I don't need him to protect me, geez. He's a more experienced cultivator, but I still am one. I've gotten more hurt in training."
It's true, but Sizhui doesn't like that either. To harm ones body without cause is against the rules. Perhaps it's not entirely without cause, considering her rapid growth, but none of their teachers had ever beat them as badly as she demands the disciples beat her, and their cores had all turned out fine.
"What hunch did you have?" his father asks.
She winces and says, "Oh, you know, womanly intuition."
It's a lie and not even a very good one.
Lan Wangji's eyes narrow but they're interrupted by Song Lan returning with two people balanced precariously on his sword. Sizhui assumes the other man clad all in white must be Xiao Xingchen but doesn't know who the blind girl that looks to be about his age is.
"Xuanyu!" the girl calls out joyously, causing him to reevaluate his assessment of blind. She's being awfully familiar with his step mother. The girl leaps from the sword before it's fully on the ground and goes running towards them, shoulder pass Lan Wangji to body slam into Lady Xuanyu. "You're still alive, right? You said you would be!"
Lady Xuanyu laughs, closing her arms around the girl's shoulders. Her shoulder is bleeding again now that his father isn't keeping pressure on it. Cant the girl see that she's injured? "Yes, yes, I'm still alive. Excellent work keeping Xiao Xingchen out of the fray, A-Qing. I knew I could depend on you."
The girl - A-Qing, apparently - glows under the praise, beaming up at Lady Xuanyu, still with her arms around her waist.
What's her problem anyway?
Another thing I HATE in fics is wwx being incompetent or bad at anything that is not cooking like WHAT DO YOU MEAN??!!!? This dude? Bad at stuff? The master of six arts! The beloved head disciple of yunmeng! The guy that survived the burial mounds without a golden core and invented a WHOLE new form of cultivation! (What even xue yang couldn't achieve in 13 years he did in 3 months!!) The guy that is a renowned genius! A prodigy! Innovative! Creative! Clever! Cunning! Charming! Confident! guy that literally is the best and great at everything you name it! The most emotionally intelligent guy! The most socially charismatic guy! The best teacher! He is The human personification of competency! He is closest a human can get to perfection! He is even morally ideal! Handsome, prettiest pretty boy and one of the kindest boy! (If you dare say he is oblivious or has a low self esteem, I will hit you with a pan). Lwj literally has a competency kink! Wwx can't be bad at anything and it's a fact (except cooking)
If he is not getting the perfect grades or being clumsy or being oblivious or has self esteem issues then that is not wwx that is just some dude. Period.

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

Damian, mildly annoyed at Bruce at the moment: It's quite simple. Batmam steals young children from their bed, usually nine or ten or so. Then he takes you to his lair and give you a deal.
Damian: If you can beat him in a game of your choosing, he will train you to be Robin. If you lose, you are eaten. I beat him in a classic fencing game. He's quite good with swords, but he wasn't very good with the sport itself.
Tim, standing next to him: Yeah, I beat him at a memory card game. I like totally cheated, but I'm too old for him to eat now, so ot doesn't matter.
Damian, nodding: Yes. The worst part of the job is disposing of failed Robins bones. He usually sucks them clean and leaves them all over the floor.
Tim: Yeah, its messy. But after you hit, like 15 he stops trying to eat you, so that's cool.
Damian: I have not yet reached 15. I'm still in danger. If you have more questions, ask Nightwing, as he was the first to avoid being eaten.

i personally believe that maximus was the former captain of the guard who was cursed into horse form pretty recently, and everyone’s having trouble adjusting to it.
like, he’s entitled to sick leave, he really ought to take a couple months to break the curse and come to terms with whatever the fuck just happened to him, but instead of embarking on a journey of self-discovery and healing he just keeps showing up to work. no one can get captain maximus to go on his fucking voyage of self actualization and fix the curse because he’s obsessed with catching flinn ryder. everyone really fucking hopes that when he finally catches this guy the curse might be broken anyway, but it isn’t.
he just keeps showing up to work. he glares at the stablehands until they saddle him up. everyone’s gone over the regulations a dozen times but there’s nothing there saying you’re not allowed to saddle and ride the captain of the guard if he makes you do it. his former second in command rides him around like ‘sir i really don’t know about this’ and he’s just like ‘are we going to catch some criminals or what.’
you can see in the movie that everyone in the royal guard defers to this horse. it’s absolutely because that’s their boss. and secondarily because now he’s two thousand pounds of percheron.
there is no evidence against this theory and you cannot prove me wrong.
Wei WuXian in a nutshell
Lan Sizhui: Dads, where do babies come from?

hc that lan wangji wrote a shit ton of poetry. from when he met wei wuxian, he was constantly writing poems about him. after he died, the poems turned from passionate and hopeful to mourning, just as lwj did. after wwx returned, there wasn't really much time to write, what with them running around the jianghu mystery-solving, but once everything has settled down and they're living together, wwx finds the poetry hidden in the jingshi. there are hundreds of pages, enough to fill dozens of books, and the vast majority of them are very clearly about wwx. before this, there was a part of wwx that still thought this was temporary, that lwj would get tired of him and he would be thrown out. but reading the poems lwj had written over the years destroyed that doubt. wwx saw so much of what lwj's life had been like, while wwx was dead; some of the pages were spotted with tears, even blood. many were smudged, or had been crumpled and smoothed out. by the time lwj returns to the jingshi after his duties, wwx is lying on the floor, tear tracks staining his face, surrounded by the contents of lwj's heart.

The thing is, if he weren't doing such a bad job of it and starting a multi-clan war while he was at it, Wei Wuxian might admire what Wen Ruohan is doing with the Yin Iron. He’s been fascinated by the possibilities of harnessing resentful energy for years, and here he is, with a huge concentration of it ripe for molding.
Of course, he if messes it up it will kill him or drive him mad or, he doesn’t really know, make his hair fall out or something, which would suck. He likes his hair.
Luckily, he has a lot of time to think about it since it appears his new position within the Wen household is to stand around looking forlorn and then to have sex with Wen Qing. He’s not sure how that fits into Wen Ruohan’s plans for world domination, but it does leave him with a lot of free time.
“Taking you away was a punishment for the Jiangs and a rewardfor my good behavior,” Wen Qing says.
She sneers on the word reward, which he thinks he’s a bit offended by. The sex is fantastic, he should be considered a reward.
Maybe they’re getting to know each other too well, because she rolls her eyes at him and clarifies, “People are not rewards and being rewarded for helping further an immoral war is not a good thing.”
Oh, right, that.

Madame Yu buys the Jiang's safety not with Wei Wuxian's hand, but his marriage. Jiang Cheng sobs as he's led away in chains. He doesn't even get to see Uncle Jiang or Shijie before he leaves.
Wei Wuxian is brought back to Wen territory and he and Wen Qing give each other identical pinched expressions as they bow three times. Wen Ning can't seem to be decided between being happy that Wei Wuxian is his brother and fretting at circumstances surrounding it.
On their wedding night, Wei Wuxian says, "You can stop looking at me like that. I'm not going to do anything you don't want me to do. I'm the war bride in this situation, you know."
"I'm sorry," Wen Qing says stiffly. He hasn't seen her relax once since he'd arrived.
He shrugs, pulling off his complicated, stuffy wedding robes, then getting to work on his hair. There are so many pins ins his hair. They really were trying to make him look like a bride, because in contrast, Wen Qing has barely any. "I'd always figured my marriage would be arranged. At least it's to someone I like."
Wen Qing hesitates, then steps forward, pushing his hands aside so she can gently pull the ornaments and ribbons from his hair. "You shouldn't like me."
"Why not?" he asks. "You're here to protect your family. I'm here for the same reason. Who am I to judge?"
"This war isn't right," she says quietly, so softly he wouldn't be able to hear her if her mouth wasn't right next to his ear.
"No," he agrees, tilting his head back so it's resting on her chest. "What are we going to do about that?"
Wen Qing is brilliant and brave and just as clever as he is, just differently. The worst thing Wen Ruohan could have done was put them together.
Her eyes light up before narrowing and she shoots a calculating look at the door, where they know people are outside and listening. She shoves him onto the bed, settling herself on his hips and leaning down to pin his wrists next to his head and for a moment Wei Wuxian nearly forgets there's a war at all because he's hit with the probably obvious realization that his wife is very, very hot. "I'm listening."

Lan Wangji is almost finished with patrol when there's an alarming sound of something hitting a nearby roof and a frantic scrambling. He thinks they're under attack and is about to set off a flare when someone hisses, "For fuck's sake Huaisang."
"So sorry that I can't perfectly judge my jumps in the dark," another voice replies. "You could be a little more helpful."
"I got us past the wards, how much helpful do you want me to be?"
Lan Wangji keeps his hand on his sword but keeps it sheathed as he uses a burst of cultivation energy to propel him onto the roof.
It places him face to face to two boys roughly his age in black and silver robes, their hair in the traditional, intricate braids of the Nie.
He recognizes Nie Huaisang, so he assumes the boy that's squinting at him must be Wei Wuxian. "Lan Xichen?"
Nie Huaisang smacks Wei Wuxian's shoulder and is only kept from losing his footing by Wei Wuxian grabbing his arm. He's extremely inebriated. "No, stupid, that's his younger brother. You know that Lan Xichen is going to be busy with Da-ge."
"Getting busy, maybe," Wei Wuxian says, rolling his eyes.
Lan Wangji is appalled. "Silence. Such behavior is would be against several rules of our sect."
Wei Wuxian stares at him then frowns before turning to his brother. "Is he serious?"
"Unfortunately," Nie Huaisang answers.
Nie Mingjue's attitude is becoming more understandable by the moment.

"This is the worst plan you've ever had," Jiang Cheng hisses, and means it.
Then again, he's here, with her, doing the stupidest thing possible. Again.
Every once in a while he thinks wistfully of the vows of obedience wives are supposed to make to their husbands. It's a pipe dream, really, but maybe there's a universe where Wei Wuxian doesn't do things like goading their enemies into chasing her to the burial mounds or sleeping with Lan Qiren's nephew or sneak into what is now enemy territory to rescue their parents.
Wei Wuxian elbows him in the side, "It's fine, it's fine, shut up."
This is not going to work, they're all going to die, and with his luck his mother is still going to manage to berate him before they do.

Wei Wuxian knows he should be grateful that Lan Xichen is here now, smiling at them from behind Lan Wangji’s shoulder, that they’re not going to be forced to wait outside the entrance of Cloud Recesses in a humiliating manner. But mostly he’s just pissed off, at Jin Zixuan for being a jerk, and at Lan Wangji for the same reason, for thinking forgetting an invitation was an appropriate reason to treat them like this. Shijie and Jiang Cheng are clan heirs, just like Lan Wangji is. He’s pretty sure the idea is for them all to get along here.
It’s an insult, plain and simple, and Wei Wuxian isn’t willing to let the Jiang enter Cloud Recesses like this.
“You are most generous,” he says to Lan Xichen, making a subtle hand gesture behind his back that causes all the Jiang disciples to freeze and fall back, no longer walking towards the entrance. He can practically hear Jiang Cheng grinding his teeth from here, but he doesn’t protest. Rank is a tricky thing with them and the disciples and the best solution they’ve found is to never, ever contradict each other when it counts, even when they think the other person is being an idiot. “However, before we enter, I must request you put up your regular wards. I understand the entrance is currently being guarded,” he inclines his head to the two Lan at the gates like he hadn’t been giving them shit thirty minutes ago, “but that’s no reason to be complacent.”
Pointing out Cloud Recesses nonsensical security system is petty, and a bit of an easy target, but it’s better than nothing.
Except Lan Xichen raises an eyebrow and asks, “What do you mean?”
This is just asking Wei Wuxian to trash his clan’s decisions, which makes no sense. Or he genuinely doesn’t know what Wei Wuxian is talking about, which is concerning enough that this is no longer about making a token protest. “You shouldn’t put up weaker wards just because you have guards here now. Even if it’s an energy drain, you should always have your strongest wards up.”
Lan Wangji is giving him a super bitchy look, which is at least what he’d been expecting. Lan Xichen’s voice is still perfectly pleasant when he says, “We do not alter the wards for shifts. I assure you that our wards are constantly set up to provide maximum protection.”
Uh.
Um.
He looks behind him, partially to hide whatever his face is doing, and partially to look at his siblings. Jiang Cheng shrugs and Shijie presses her lips together and gives a slight shake of her head. Okay, wards are his thing, he hadn’t exactly expected his siblings to notice, but from Shijie’s reaction the Lan brothers aren’t messing with him right now.
“I can’t let my shijie stay here if this is your maximum protection,” he says apologetically. He will march them all down back to Caiyi and put them on the first boat to Lotus Pier.
Lan Xichen’s smile becomes a little fixed. “Our wards are put in place by our clan elders. You have nothing to worry about.”
He could stand here and argue with them about it, but. He sketches a talisman in the air, not even bothering to ink it on paper, and sends it forward with an arrogant flick of his hand that he learned from Madam Yu.
As soon as it hits the wards it fizzles, then it all dissolves, the barrier breaking down like a string being cut.
The Lans all turn to it, incredulous. He didn’t know they had facial expressions, but that’s shock if he’s ever seen it. “They are inadequate. They are ancient and predictable and weak.” He starts sketching in the air again, and this is something that he should grab talisman paper for, but it’s easier for them to see this way. “You use silver as your grounding base, right? The air around it tastes like it. Copper is basic and old and resists meddling better, although iron will give you more flexibility for modifications. Your also weakened by using a continuous line rather than a feedback loop. Once one section breaks, the rest follow suit, which means someone only needs to find one weak spot to bring it down.” He has to put his weight into this one, shoving the glowing characters into the nearest pillar and watching his red spiritual energy flare across it. The warding barrier is back up, but different than it was before. Better. “That’ll do for now. The Jiang are happy to provide aid in updating your wards.”
If they don’t accept that help, they’re going home. He cannot handle the stress of being worried about all his martial brothers and sisters all the time because the Lan haven’t updated their practices since Lan An.
They’re all staring at him now. He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, not liking their stares, because he’s not sure what to do with them. They’re not hostile, he doesn’t think.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Shijie says, voice sweet and full of false politeness. “We may have neglected to introduce ourselves properly. This is Wei Wuxian.”
Those stares are sharper now. “Wei Wuxian,” Lan Xichen repeats slowly. “The Jiang’s first disciple is Wei Wuxian.”
“That’s me,” he agrees cheerfully.
“You are – young,” Lan Xichen settles on finally.
“The invitation said all disciples below twenty one,” Wei Wuxian says, blinking. “I’m fifteen, so I’m here. I distributed my duties among the senior disciples before I left.”
“I encourage you to accept his aid. Senior Brother Wei is a master of talismans.” Ooh, Jiang Cheng must have been more pissed off by all this than he let one. He never calls him Senior Brother.
Lan Xichen looks back at the barrier he’d just put up and says, “I see that.” His smile when he looks at them is somehow both more fixed and more genuine. “I will discuss it with my uncle, but perhaps we do need a bit of an update.” He bows and gestures to the gate. “We welcome the Jiang to Cloud Recesses.”
Wei Wuxian falls back enough so he can walk side by side with Jiang Cheng and tries not to let Lan Wangji’s heavy gaze bother him.
