This is magenta, and not pink. Unlike pink, magenta doesn’t actually exist. Our brain just invents magenta to serve as what it considers a logical bridge between red and violet, which each exist at opposite ends of a linear spectrum.
Your brain is a badly-designed hot mess of bootstrapped chemistry that will tell you that all kinds of shit is happening that has no correlation to physical reality, including time travel. It just makes things up. Your brain is guessing about what’s happening when your eyes saccade, what’s happening in your blind spot, and what the majority of the visible light spectrum looks like, and you don’t know it’s happening because it doesn’t aid your survival to become aware that a lot of what you see is fake.
The human eye only has three types of color sensitive cones, which detect red, blue, and green light. Your brain is making up every other color you perceive.
Let’s have a little fun with that thought. This is the visible spectrum of light.
You will of course note that yellow is on the chart. Yellow has a discreet wavelength, and is therefore a distinct physical color. But we can’t see it.
“Sorry, what the fuck?”
What we call yellow is just what our brain shrugs and spits out when our red and green cones are equally stimulated. We have light receptors that can pick up on the physical spectrum of light we call yellow: that’s why yellow things don’t just look like moving black blocks to us. But your brain has no fucking idea what the color yellow looks like.
Some animals have eyes that can perceive the color yellow! Goldfish have a yellow cone in their eyes. If they could talk, they could tell us what yellow looks like. But we wouldn’t be able to understand it.
What your brain actually sees of the color spectrum:
We can measure the wavelength of light, so we know that when we see ‘yellow,’ we are seeing light in that 550-ish nanometers range. But we don’t have a cone in our eyes that can pick that up. Your brain just has a very consistent guess about what color that wavelength of light could be. We decided to name that guess ‘yellow.’ We can’t imagine what yellow really looks like any more than a dog can imagine the color red.
Here’s the funny thing: your brain is never perceiving just one photon of light at a time. Something like 2*10⁸ photons per second are hitting your retina under normal conditions. Your brain doesn’t individually process all of them. So it averages them out. It grabs a bunch of photons all coming from the same direction, with the same pattern, and goes, “yeah, that cup is blue, fuck it, next.”
That’s how colors blend in our eyes. So sure, if a photon of light with a wavelength of 550 nanometers bounces into our eyes, we see what we call “yellow.” But if we see two photons at the same time, coming from the same object, one of which is 500 nms and the other of which is 600 nms, your brain will average them out and you will still see yellow even though none of the light you just saw was 550 nms.
So how does magenta factor into this?
Well, as we’ve just established, when your brain sees light from two different slices of the visible light spectrum, it will try to just average them together. Green plus red is yellow, fuck it. If it’s more red than green, we’ll call that ‘orange.’ Literally who gives a shit, we’re trying to forage over here. There are bears out here and it’s so scary.
What happens if you take the average of blue and red light, which we perceive to be magenta? What’s the centerpoint of that line?
Fucking green.
Hey, that’s not gonna work? We live on a planet where EVERYTHING IS GREEN. If something is NOT green, that means it’s either food, or a potential source of danger, and either way your brain wants you to know about it.
So your brain goes, WHOOPS. Okay - this is fine. We already made up yellow, orange, cyan, and violet. We’ll just make up another color. Something that looks really, really different from green.
And so it made up magenta.
So, physics-wise, is magenta “real?”
No; there’s no single wavelength of light that corresponds to magenta. But you’re rarely seeing only a single wavelength of light anyway. And even when you are, every color other than RGB is a dart thrown on the wall by your meat computer. This is the CIE Chromaticity Diagram:
Explaining this thing is a little more than I want to take on on a Saturday morning, but I’ve included a link above that goes into it a little more. The point is that only the colors that actually touch the ‘outline’ of the shape actually correspond to a specific wavelength of light. All of the other colors are blends of multiple wavelengths. So magenta isn’t special.
Given that color is just a fun trick your brain is playing on you to help you find food and avoid danger, is magenta real?
Yeah, absolutely. Or at least, it’s just as real as most of what we see. It’s what we see when we mix up blue and red. It would be disastrous from a survival standpoint to perceive that color as green, so we don’t. Because it’s not green. Light that’s green has a wavelength of around 510 nm. Stuff that’s magenta bounces back light that is both ~400 and ~700. Your brain knows the difference. So it fills in the gap for you, with the best guess it has, same as it does with your blind spot.
The perception of color exists within your brain, and your brain says you see magenta. So you see magenta.
So I'm maybe just a liiiiiiittle obsessive, and I wanted to work out the timeline of the show, and figured I'd share it with you all. I can't quite figure out how to format this for tumblr, so I'm going to just c&p images of the tables and then dump all of it in unformatted text I guess under a read more? hiii everyone haii so... I am Here to Talk about the Russian Language in Heated Rivalry. we'll cover scenes by episode, with timestamps, in terms of translation, tone, and pronunciation because I <3 am a russian canadian and certifiably insane about my (russian) canadian show. thank u thank u. strap in.
as a preamble: Connor's russian is not perfect, but very good. he has an accent, he speaks with slightly unnatural inflections, and a native speaker would guess that he is not one. however, he could plausibly pass for someone like Ksenia (I believe her first language is russian, she just doesn't use it frequently). when I watched episodes 1–2 with a russian friend we were both convinced Connor grew up speaking russian, or perhaps another slavic language, and around the age of like 10-12 kinda stopped, because, having been around many bilinguals, we have a frame of reference.
and then we looked him up.
anyway. to the point!!
episode 1
9:30 (Ilya's phone calls to dad and brother)
Alexei's russian is very clean! he speaks with demeaning language. "prettyboy," the f-word, and then he also is mocking Ilya. very much comes off as Alexei knowing that Ilya will ultimately not refuse.
when Ilya says "I have no money left..." etc., that sounds very natural. the word he uses for "man" is equivalent to "bro" in russian. good lingo for the time period and context.
when Alexei says "wah-wah, you whiny f-", he adds "Ilyushka" at the end, which is a diminutive of Ilya. the form Alexei uses has a joking, affectionate connotation, and it can be used in friendly context (to a kid, for example), but Alexei clearly makes it sound mocking. I don't think diminutives are used at any other point in the show, which is extremely unnatural for russians. we rarely use full names, it's very formal. Alexei would be Lyosha, Svetlana would be Sveta – this is informal. for the name Ilya, however, diminutives are less common and always carry affectionate rather than informal tone. they exist, but the full name of Ilya would most often be used in casual context as is, and other forms are specifically affectionate.
right after Alexei hangs up, the subtitles just say (laughter), but I'm pretty sure he mutters обалдеть, which is an informal word for "unbelievable," exasperated.
when Ilya calls his dad, he addresses him as "father" (отец), whereas when talking to Alexei he was saying "dad" (папа) (which is also what Shane picks up on later, lmao).
"apologize to russia," "I don't care about 'we,' you will not lose" from his father are so very specifically russian that I have to applaud the detail. especially the latter, about personal responsibility, is something that every single russian has heard from a parent. extremely common for kids to hear when they say that others in the class struggled with the material, too, for example, but the parent would say "I don't care about others, I care about you" in dismissal. like, the others around you are stupid, and that's not an excuse to slack off. it's meant to hurt on a generational level.
30:37 (Ilya's call to brother)
pretty straightforward captions. when Ilya and Alexei talk about money, they both say "twenty thousand bucks," not "dollars". "for fuck you" is an apt translation of what Alexei actually says, only I'm not sure a russian speaker would say that at all. like, I haven't heard anyone use that phrase in russian before to mean it in this context. this is nothing, truly, lol, just wanted to note.
when Ilya is frustrated, "it's midnight here!", Connor acts it out well. "how's dad" is also very clean (he says "dad," again). when Alexei says "well, he's stupid" he uses a colloquial word for "stupid", тупой, which literally means "blunt". also very natural!
42:20 (Ilya comes home to find Svetlana there)
"I thought you were back in russia" is the caption, but Ilya actually says "i thought you went back to moscow." which I thought was funny. "what the fuck are you doing here" he actually asks without the "fuck," just the tone is very, idk, confused I guess.
45:50 (rooftop <3)
this is where I went oh! Connor knows ball. because he says "my God", господи, in russian when the subtitles say (murmuring). very good, natural, exasperated, just the thing you'd say when your russian military fucking general of a father puts the burden of an entire country's success on you and some spoiled canadian boy comes to gloat in your face. perfect.
episode 2
18:33 (sochi 2014 gala)
Ilya's dad's russian is very clean, with slight ukrainian lilt (the actor is ukrainian). the word that he uses for "sloppy" ("your play is sloppy", халтура) is super colloquial and a nice touch. when Ilya talks about making the team "click", the word for it is also very specific, "the team is сыграна", and it means, literally, "played together," as in "bound together through playing". again, the whole speech is very in-character for someone like Ilya's dad, in that he puts all the blame on his son despite his brilliant career.
the background fading dialogue between the minister and Ilya's dad is right out of a russian movie. clean and with great pace and inflections. like I would've said it was released in russia if you'd shown me just that.
Svetlana says "maybe too much talking," there's not a "mr. Minister" as it's added in captions. the minister says "my angel, you, too, talk too much sometimes, especially when it comes to hockey"; the subtitles have just "but you love talking about hockey, my angel".
21:50 (washroom at gala)
right away I have to say Sasha's russian is the worst of them all though it is still admittedly better than the average marvel-esque russian. it's mostly just very sloppy pronunciation ("I pay attention sometimes", "when there's something worth paying attention to" – "attention" is horribly mispronounced both times, different ways). overall, his consonants are too soft. you can probably hear it in comparison to Ilya's.
"long time no see" can't be cut in russian as it can be in english, it'd be the full phrase, not just "long time" (давненько) but "long time no see" (давненько не виделись). "I know you didn't watch a single fucking game" does not have a swear word in the original. same with Svetlana's "you need to stop giving a fuck what he thinks" – she doesn't swear at all there. Svetlana's speech is very clear and simply brilliant, at times lowkey more organic than whatever they're putting out in russia these days. "that's how you end up winning the cup" is when Svetlana actually calls it the Stanley cup specifically! I believe it's the only time anyone ever does in the show.
"I fucking love it there" from Sasha doesn't have a swear word in the original, he just says "I adore that place".
vocabulary-wise, the whole washroom convo sounds mostly natural, which is so striking to me. doesn't read like it was written in english and auto-translated.
29:05 Ilya yells "for you, mom!" when he holds up the cup. :,)
39:50 not language, but I really resonate with Ilya's "there's no 'have to', it's home." like I really appreciate this glimpse into like. the complicated aspect of. all this.

when Svetlana calls Shane "hot" there, it's not a direct translation. the word she uses is rooted to "beauty", красавчик. russian does not have a non-awkward direct translation of "hot" to mean "sexy", and the russian word for "sexy" is extremely clumsy and Svetlana would not have said it. but based on the way the original russian word is used, it translates to "hot"/"sexy" extremely well. also, no swear words there (though subtitles say "fucking hot"). her tone is more like. cute and teasing Ilya.
the scene in the car is just brilliant. organic phrases all around. Ilya's "nope" is actually russian-sounding не-а, the correct direct translation. again, of course, Ksenia's russian is a lot less accented than Connor's. but the word choice and inflections are correct, even if pronunciation is sometimes a bit off.
19:10 (Ilya talks to dad on the phone)
Ilya calls him "dad", папа, throughout, despite subtitles having "father" there! idk why they did it in the subtitles. to me "dad" is indicative of Ilya being aware that his father is no longer all there, so he is more gentle. it's important to me. also, again! whenever the subtitles have "fuck"s in that scene, they are not there in russian. Ilya only calls Alexei an asshole in the end, but that's that on swear words. the scene overall is pretty good, pronunciation and translation-wise.
35:03 (Ilya at the gym watching Shane x Rose coverage)
he swears when he stubs his toe. it's блять, the universal russian swear word. kinda between "shit" and "fuck," closer to the latter in terms of being pretty inappropriate. we russians have been lamenting the gaping absence of this word in Ilya's vocab. he should be saying it left and right, realistically.
37:10 (the club scene!!!!) I just want to stress that the russian version of all the things she said would hit harder here. the original song is called I have lost my mind, and it's what's being repeated, over and over, in russian instead of "all the things she said" in english in the chorus. I have lost my mind, indeed (c) Ilya probably.

Svetlana's "jesus christ" is actually еб твою мать, which is, I think, untranslatable, but is something like "fuck your mom", and does have a connotation of "jesus christ" in this context. like, disbelief, disappointment, exasperation. yeah. brilliant. very organic. I laughed.
their dialogue does not feel like it was written in english and translated. sentence structure and word choice are closer to what it would be like actually. not perfect, but really good.
30:30 (Ilya's father's wake)
not language, but to clarify: this
is vodka + rye bread. customary to leave at the table at the wake for the deceased. apparently someone thought it was a brownie. my dad had sent me a meme about this so I knew I had to address it as it breached confinement. anyway.
here Connor's russian really picks up in my opinion. idk what order this was shot in, but he does really well here. it's hard to act in a language that is not your native, and Connor pulls it off.
32:58 specifically for some reason in Ilya's "if you do, I will use every bit of my power...." they skip the "you'll definitely regret it", which he says in russian. as in, if you talk to me again, you'll definitely regret it.
34:00 Svetlana does say "Jane" very, very much like "Shane" in "I just hope Jane knows how lucky he is", and she does refer to "Jane" as a he. it's very distinct, and very deliberate in russian ("her" would be yieey, "him" is yiemy).
37:00 (the call. the call)
I never want to come back here again — "I will never come back here again" (no "want". it's very certainly just "I will never").
I fucking hate it here — "I hate everything here" (no swear words).
And they all fucking hate me — "And everyone hates me" (no swear words).
I make sure everyone has clothes they like — "I see to it that everyone has normal clothes" (correct connotation! russian is more organic, but means the same thing).
I make sure the food is perfect — "that the food is up to par" (again correct connotation, but word choice is colloquial and appropriate).
And I have nothing for these people — "And I can't give jack shit to these people" (more expressive language, the "shit" is warranted to correspond to what he says).
I give them everything — "I gave them everything" (past tense. he already gave them everything).
They don't care — "They don't give a damn" (personal preference but. the word he uses, пофиг, is again colloquial informal frustration word that is fitting to character and situation).
I still paid for it all — the cleanest Connor has ever sounded in russian in my personal (and correct) opinion. I jumped in my seat the first time I heard it. if you want to hear very, very clean russian, this is it.
For any of it – same as above.
Fuck me — "Damn" (I actually think translation here is correct given context and connotation, but literally it's this. also very clean btw).
But not like I love you – almost perfectly clean. the only giveaway is the first "ne" sound ("not"). the rest is raw and very very good.
That's the worst fucking part of all this is... – "This is where all the shit is" (same meaning).
all I want is you — "I want only you."
It's always you — "and always, only you."
I'm so in love with you, and I don't know what to do about it.
(almost perfectly clean on Connor's part. slight inflections give it away but certain parts are impressively native-sounding).

Ilya says the fated i love you, я тебя люблю, ya tebya lubluy, to Shane twice. and doesn't speak a word of russian otherwise the entire episode, for the first time in the show. and I think to him, this is beautiful and freeing and good. I think for him as a character this means good things. I think it means some sort of progress. this is a happy lack of russian :)

i think theyre still very much together and very much larried, and this year has been SO loud and only getting louder, so i have high hopes for the future and im sticking around to see what happens. i dont know why you feel like unlarrying lately, but this year feels like such a resurgence i cant imagine leaving now. i hope youre able to re-find the fun in this all, because im nothing but excited.
