Hey can I recommend that instead of making challah, you make a brioche? They're basically the same thing, but challah has a significant religious and spiritual meaning to the Jewish faith. Both challah and brioche are sweet eggy breads but brioche doesn't have a religious meaning. Sorry if this is rude, it's just important to me.

Also challah (the bread, not the dough-sacrificing ritual) is basically the same as other braided eggs breads in Europe, like Polish chałka and Czech vánočka. Cause Europe is where Ashkenazim picked it up, through cultural exchange.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve used regular ol’ sliced bread at Shabbat. Sweet Hawaiian Rolls are also great.

Yeah, okay, I know, I’m a few days late late commenting on EP2 of Kimisomu, but let it be known that I’m all-in. It’s my favorite show of the season, the year so far, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this ended up at the top of my year-end list. If the rest of the episodes are as magical as the first two, this is a no-brainer 10/10.

This show has so many tender, careful details that it’s impossible to freeze any given frame and not find something incredibly impressive. I love the character design, love the school layout, love the outfits, love love LOVE everything about how this show looks. It’s obvious that whoever works on this show cares a great deal about its presentation, because despite not having a fresh appearance it has an exceptionally competent one.

And thank goodness these looks aren’t wasted on a bad story, because Kimisomu has a great one. It’s too easy for formulaic high-school rom coms to fall into repetitive tropes, but this show deftly avoids them. Our sleep-deprived asshole Ganta makes for a wonderful MC, and his partner-in-crime Isaki brings the sunshine despite her own insomnia-fueled quirks. Why exactly are these two suffering so much? I have a few guesses, but I truly don’t know where this show is taking us. 

The scene where Kurashiki-sensei discovers the hideout sunk my heart despite it just being the first truly challenging moment for our heroes. The show also uses this opportunity to demonstrate how serious it is about it’s subject matter, by having the responsible adult make sure that these students aren’t using the room to have sex. It’s a solid moment by itself, and also one that shows how unafraid Kimisomu is in addressing real issues. 

Of course it’s a huge relief when Kirashiki-sensei shows some mercy to this budding romance, but the scene in the teacher’s office also shows how well-motivated teachers should behave around innovative students. Far from the bumbling airheads we see in other “kids rule, adults drool” anime, these adults behave like adults (so far), and that grounds the show even further into a beautiful reality. A magical one, it needs be said, but reality nonetheless.

Did I mention how pretty this show is? Again, every frame struts with confidence, but there have been a few money shots per episode that truly stick out. I’ll share my two favorites below, and will promise to do so every week going forward until this show ends. 

In summary, Kimisomu has a lot of the good stuff I want in a high school rom com and none of the bad stuff. It is beautifully drawn, sweetly told, and heartachingly real. I love it and can’t wait to watch more.

Let me get this straight because I've only seen memes and am piecing this together as i go, but i think i figured out what's happening.

Tumblr is advertising the tumblr app, on the tumblr app, using a photo of a guy in a Pikachu cosplay, because that's what they think it will take to successfully sell this app, to people whom already use it?

I can’t get over how the entire Picture Perfect arc was - aside from an attempt to Save Yashiro - Hanako’s rock solid attempt to court her.

Nearly the entire place is designed to make him look like what he understands Her Type to be - academically gifted, athletic, popular. All the things Yashiro’s told him repeatedly (and demonstrated through her various crushes) that she likes in a guy.

And the only one of those he was on his own was ‘athletic’. He doesn’t realize that Yashiro already knows what Amane Yugi was like - unpopular, lousy grades, cut class a lot, bullied to hell and back. So of course she’s not buying any of this as real. If Hanako had just focused on the ‘saving her’ part of his idea, it actually probably would’ve worked. But he used the perfect fantasy world as an opportunity to try to be what he thinks she wants in a guy…and she actually kinda treated him exactly like she treats those fantasy crushes in her daily life. “You’re sweet and interesting but the guy I like isn’t here - let me recruit you into finding him!”

And yet…I can’t help thinking it’s kind of sweet. Boneheaded, in a very young-boy way, but sweet. She told him she likes athletic, popular, smart guys…and he tried to be that for her. He actually asked her out. He knows very little about what she likes or has in her non-school life, except her bizarrely named hamsters, so he invites her to a movie with hamster characters. 

And where does he get her actual interest and engagement? When he stops pretending to be the kind of guy she keeps telling him she wants, and nerds out at her about stars.

It just feels like the supernatural equivalent of presenting her with a box of chocolates and a big bunch of roses, somehow.  The gifts you give because it’s expected, and you find out later she’s got allergies and body image issues and you find out what she actually wants.
