Most underrated bit in Neverafter is when Pinocchio and Gerard pitch wolf jokes to the big bad wolf and Gerard’s is so bad that the wolf gives him a year to come up with a better one or he’ll kill him.

dimension 20 neverafter episode 20 “the ending of all things (part 2)” you will always remain in my heart
"Everyone you ever knew who told you that they would keep you safe as long as you behaved were already hurting you."
i definitely just reblogged this quote but it won't stop rotating in my brain so here's my fun little analysis of brennan's iconic "There is no moral. The wolf eats you one day, and until then the forest is beautiful" from d20 Neverafter
humans are afraid of death, afraid of dying. afraid of missing out, of leaving what they love or what they've created or what they never got the chance to do, the person they never got the chance to be. it is natural, and it is normal, and it is encouraged. people don't want to die, but when they do die they want there to have been a closed circle in their story, a plot fleshed out and a great achievement made. perhaps a lesson to be learned, or other wisdom to be passed on and circulated.
but the truth is that not every life is like that. the lives that leave us with wisdom and truth and new beginnings are incredible, and wonderful, but they are few and far between. most people's lives are just... small. and not in a nihilistic, "nothing matters" sort of way, but in the way that is contained. my life is full of love and joy and pain and worry and hurt and kindness and so much more, but it is still small. i am just one person. there is no moral in my story that i can determine. but my life is still beautiful. the forest of my life is beautiful. full of surprises and danger and secrets, yes, but beautiful and mysterious and begging to be explored.
it is scary to take a step off the path, it is scary to leave what is known and traveled and worn over time. it is so, so very terrifying to decide to do something different. people think that by straying from the path in the woods, they are inviting danger and will not live up to what they were "meant to." and yes, one day, the wolf will eat me, as it will eat every other person. and when the wolf comes, there may not be a great lesson to be learned or a moral to internalize. but despite it all, despite that, my forest is still beautiful, rich, and worth living in.
the wolf comes when the wolf decides, not when your heel sinks into soft dirt and wild foliage.
so until the wolf arrives, do not be afraid to stray from the path.
"All of you immediately have the sensation that you are seeing something you absolutely should not see— like, the face of a divinity you don't worship. The smile of a devil you never believed in."

I think there is something to be said about how important the Rules are to Maxwell.
Gentlemen Fisting Has Rules. The Rules give him operating parameters. They keep him contained.
No rules? He goes dead-eyed. He is caked in blood. He horrifies his family not due to be rowdy, but due to his bloodlust.
The Rules are safe. They keep him from becoming an animal, they keep him a gentleman.
He can deal with being a rowdy, being rowdy has Rules. He can't be a monster. He can be 'Maxwell Gotch, a rowdy,' he is scared to be 'The Max, a monster with bloodlust.'
I am once again going crazy thinking about why Comfrey is so consistently calling her son, his wife and the life they have built in together in Pilby boring. Canonically, they make, consume, and smuggle drugs. There are seemingly a shit load of guns and explosives around their farm. Olethra raises, trains, and races giant Guinea fowl. They detest bankers so I’m guessing there’s plenty of black market trade and burying or hiding of money going on. And yet in every letter, note, and in her own words Comfrey has consistently characterized Hutch as being boring, dull, his life uninteresting and lacking in adventure. Girl, what the fuck are you talking about? Is she really so unwilling to accept that there are adventures to be had on the ground? So sky-eyed that she easily and enthusiastically puts down her own son for not making the same choices as her? Pilby seems like exactly the sort of place an adventurer would love, but she holds it with so much disdain. It’s making me insane.
God, Maxwell and Olethra's equal but opposite character arcs are really getting to me.
Olethra is sky-eyed from the start, granddaughter of the legendary adventurer Comfrey MacLeod. She's desperate to escape the boring life that her parents lead in Pilby and to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother. She's a huge fan of the Zephyr crew, and she read all of Monty's books about their adventures.
But as she goes on this adventure, she realizes that while it is certainly fantastical, it's also dangerous as well. She's lucky enough to have the mech, but the other people around her don't have that kind of protection. She watches them get beaten bloody and struggle to fight back. When she tries to get in a good quip for Monty's next book, he's distracted in the middle of his fight. Things aren't like the stories.
And on top of all of this, the grandmother that she adored so much is slowly revealing herself to be a not-so-great person. She was reckless and single-minded, prone to taking on debts that she knew she couldn't pay. She was sometimes unkind to the people who had once been family to her, and sometimes her recklessness really hurt them. Her grandmother is not the false idol that Olethra has made her out to be, she is a real and flawed woman.
On the other hand, Maxwell is incredibly serious and practical. While he holds onto his grandfather's idea that finding Zood is a worthy investment, he does not hold onto any whimsical ideas of exploring it. He simply wishes to note that it exists to restore the Gotch family name before immediately returning to Gath. Even his fighting is based in rules and structure, even if it's incredibly violent. Mordecestershire is "breaking the rules" by wearing a jetpack to escape instead of simply dying from being thrown off the ship. It's all logical.
But the longer that Maxwell spends in Zood, the more impractical and almost whimsical he becomes. Yes he's still incredibly serious, but he also believes for a moment that he could fight a dinosaur. He jokes with Monty about his books being terrible. He makes the "rowdy" and reckless choice to give Torse his heart. He throws a snowball at Monty when they're at the Ectic Research Station. Even the "you're meat" scene is its own kind of twisted whimsy, comically violent and highly impractical. Of course he's still a bit of a wet blanket sometimes, but he's slowly learning why his grandfather was so sky-eyed.
Olethra's arc is about a dreamer having to ground her dreams in reality, and Maxwell's arc is about getting a realist to start dreaming again.
there’s something about van standing behind torse while he’s talking to the zumharan council and just going “yeah!” and then doing it again for maxwell when he’s arguing with his father… it’s just *chefs kiss*
I love how Longspot Gotch in episode one makes a point of saying he spent a lot of money to ensure his sons received the proper education to have respectable and lucrative careers…
And now in episode four we learn how Wealwell went to a FULL university… and really did major in reposed standing.
Not mathematics, not finance, not dance… STANDING!
I love when a bit goes this far!
So I’m on a reading kick (obvi) and I’ve started dungeon crawler Carl recently.

thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.
sorry to put your tags on blast on this insane breach containment post I have since muted, but you're right and you should say it.
It is defeatable. Go for the throat.
Honestly, I'd LOVE to have a side quest set fully in Gath. I'm expecting that we're not gonna get back from Zood until CloHo ends, but there's so much worldbuilding made for Gath that I want to see so badly. There's so many cities mentioned that we're quite possibly never gonna see again and there's so much potential there that I really hope they bite into in the future
