This may be radical but I do not think voting for someone evil is a crime for which the punishment should be a horrible death. Weird of me I know.

These are real people who are really struggling against this pandemic. Their leadership is ignoring their needs and putting its head in the sand. They don't have access to kind of resources they would need to successfully socially distance at school or at work or wherever. And they don't have much choice about returning to work or school, because life is expensive. So they go, and they hope not to catch it from others, because there's no choice if they'd like to eat.

People are truly dying. And for some reason, some people think it's acceptable to mock them because...? Is this really the world that we live in now, that we mock people from a presumed different political party or culture because they are dying of a horrifying, hungry, implacable virus?

If you can really, truly be okay with mocking desperate, scared people dying in the midst of a pandemic, you're a garbage human being. Even if they're Covid deniers. Even if they catch it because they weren't following guidelines. Even if they literally do everything wrong. Because they are people, and every death is tragic, and doubly so if it might have been preventable.

Fuck. Stop being an awful neoliberal and grow some fucking compassion for your fellow person.

The deepest red areas will still elect Republican politicians at a local and national level; there just wouldn’t be enough of them at the national level to do diddly squat. Which means that if they wanted to have any power over the national destiny at all, they would have to suck it up and move to the left, to appeal to the centrists they’ve alienated in the last couple of decades and especially the last few years. Which would enable the Democrats to move further leftward, because it would change the Overton window. If there were 70% voter turnout in two consecutive Presidential elections, the Republican party as we know it would be toast. It would probably collapse, and another party would take its place. That party would still be conservative, but it would be more centrist-conservative instead of alt right, and possibly only merely unpleasant instead of actively evil. But also, think what eight solid years of not having to kowtow to Republicans to get anything done would allow the Democrats to do. Just, like, imagine if Nancy Pelosi could propose a bill and it would pass the House and actually … get through the Senate, too, and then get signed by the President. Or if AOC or Elizabeth Warren could do that. Think about that, for a minute. Isn’t that a world we’d rather be living in? I mean, it wouldn’t be perfect–there would still be lots of problems!–but it would be a world in which problems would be FIXABLE. In which things could change for the BETTER. And you know what, that’s achievable. If we get EVERYONE to the polls. If we make a HABIT of voting. If enough of us vote that Republican voter suppression makes no difference whatsoever.

Listen I don't have a very big reach and I am in Texas so I can't vote against this bill PLEASE signal boost this so people in Indiana can fight back against this!

The bill is stating ANYONE convicted of a protest-related charge (even if it is not related to actual lawbreaking like vandalism, looting or violence) will not only NOT get federal financial aid such as unemployment benefits but also will have to pay restitution to the law agency that arrested them on top of standard conviction/court fees

Indiana please vote, call, and write your local representatives to stop this from going through because the next step is a law agency attacking a peaceful protest for no reason other than anyone who defends themselves will have to pay them money

Ok so what’s up with people acting like “if you’re not at least 1/2 a nonwhite ethnicity you’re just white” as if genetics even works in percentages or fractions lol like. Have you ever actually met someone who is ~25%~ (whatever the fuck that means) nonwhite? Most of the time they still look nonwhite! Many have been raised under their nonwhite culture and experience racism for... guess what... not being white! Are we just supposed to all take DNA tests (as if different tests won’t give different results) and act like racists would ever go “oops sorry I was racist to you, i just found out youre 49% black not 50%, my bad”? i just wanna say that slurs don’t just “slip out” when they aren’t part of your everyday vocabulary. the worst thing ive ever had slip out at an inappropriate time was an “oh fuck” when i messed up in art class, because i don’t use violent slurs that i have no right to say.

just remember that the next time your friend, or some youtuber, yells out a racist slur when he gets beat at a video game. it’s not the kind of thing that comes out by accident when you never use it usually.

When we were children, my sister had private music lessons at her violin teacher’s house. I only visited there once, but I still remember that afternoon. The teacher had an artificial pond in her yard, a large beautiful thing with lily pads and plant life. And in the pond, there were goldfish. I had never seen such enormous goldfish. 

I spent several minutes just staring at them (and trying to convince them to bite my fingers.) When my sister’s violin lesson ended, her teacher came out to the yard and explained that these goldfish were the same small creatures that were often unfortunately sold in plastic bags at state fairs. They were only about two inches long apiece, when she bought them and put them in the new, empty pond. In essence, they were like every goldfish I had seen before, but they had been given a much larger, much richer environment in which to flourish. As a result, they had grown into some of the most remarkable, vibrant creatures my twelve-year-old self had ever met with. All because of a pond. 

Funny what lessons children remember. My sister doesn’t play the violin anymore, but that was the first time I caught a glimpse of the overwhelming extent to which it matters, the way the world treats us.

The irony of my neighbor committing microaggressions while telling me she just learned what microaggressions are is just, like...peak.

She's a lesbian boomer, and we're friends, but sometimes the things that come out of her mouth cause me actual, physical pain.

Correct. We are just regular people. But we sure as fuck aren't white, and you shouldn't think of us that way. It's insulting. It's humiliating, even. We have our own culture and ways, and I'm tired of those things being stolen and subsumed by white folks. I'm tired of white bullshit. I'm tired of having to gently educate people about why their racism is bad. I'm tired as fuck of capitulating to whiteness.

I do not want your whiteness. Stop offering it as though it's a prize to be attained

beep beep sometimes when you have been in survival mode for a long time the parts of you dedicated to Wanting Things atrophy and you forget how to envision a future that feels rewarding because you are busy with the business of staying alive, and it can seem like your life must be pointless because you can’t imagine any long term goals. sometimes even when you leave survival mode you can’t remember how to Want Things. that doesn’t mean you need to give up on having a good and fulfilling life, it just means that Wanting Things is a muscle you need to gradually strengthen. the part of you that has dreams and aspirations is still there, it just fell asleep, but if you wiggle it enough it can and will regain feeling. it’s okay to start small
