Because 90% of the time they're just attention seeking and also a woman can't do that in a male space because it would count against her immediately. Like I can’t stop thinking about how she was seen as funny while writing the series, but as soon as it ended and she swapped to Pottermore people went into “women aren’t funny” mode and decided the most obvious joke on the planet (the idea that wizards would just shit on the floor and Vanish it) was a serious, disgusting, discontinuous, pathetic attempt at worldbuilding.
This reminds me of how her publisher asked her to use her initials, hiding her sex, so readers wouldn't discriminate against her for being a woman writer and not buy her book. The subsequent publicity after the book was bought in America led to her being outed as a woman. If she hadn't been outed, and been the genderless J.K. Rowling, would the world have assumed she was a man these past twenty-five years? Most likely, as the world wouldn't dare deign credit of a beloved, complex literary work to a woman if it can help it.
And assumed to be a private man, how would that have affected the public's backlash if she made a statement about gender ideology? Going by how men are treated vs. women, most likely she wouldn't be able to, in her own words, paper her house in death threats. She'd probably be canceled but not put to the proverbial stake. Male authors are giving the dignity of privacy, and even in the social media age, they aren't harassed to the same extent as female authors. Men get to be private for the inherent sake of it, but women, it's not just for the human right of privacy, it's sheer survival.
It has to do with sexism.
I have come to wonder if, perhaps, for women, author photos are too often a lose-lose situation.
