visible bruises hidden under a sweater that keeps riding up, or poorly covered with makeup, dodging questions as their friends get more and more concerned

medic counting on their team not paying too much attention to the slowly spreading stain underneath their field jacket and the way that their hands are shaking

reliable, steady intelligence source doesn’t get sick, and the way their voice is cracking over the radio is just a bad signal

a meeting that they have to lead in five minutes and a black eye that they’ve resigned themselves to not being able to hide

absolutely refusing to admit anything is wrong despite the poorly-muffled coughing and sniffling

fresh stitches underneath a suit or gown, shrugging off friendly hugs that land on just-closed wounds

I love hidden injuries and the discovery of said injuries with all of my heart, but--

Injuries that are just too hard or even impossible to hide. Blood rapidly soaking through clothes and staining hands when trying to cover up or put pressure on wounds. Cuts and bruises in obvious, easy to see places where clothes can't cover or keep riding up. Bones very obviously broken. Injuries so painful that it's impossible to mask it, whumpee curling in on themselves or falling to the ground out of sheer agony.

The panic of whumpee wanting, needing, to hide the injury and pretend they're okay, it's okay, they can keep going, and the immediate realisation that it can't be hidden, and everyone around them realising something is wrong.

Magic Whump/Angst Prompt List

Based off of my SOA magic system that should probably post, because yesterday was my birthday, these are basically my truest fave tropes

When heartbreak/grief affects a character's magic

Magic backfiring often having the same effects as a gun backfiring

When the stress and trauma is genuinely killing the character

The variance of scars caused by magic. Necrotic scars from dark magic. Colorful scars from haphazard spellcasting. Lighting scars that refuse to fade. Leathery skin from overuse of fire magic. Discolored fingertips, foggy eyes, rapidly graying hair, gimme gimme gimme

Nose bleeds from overuse? A class. But what about... tinnitus, blurred vision, dizzying, loss of appetite, weight loss, tingling/numbness, loss of balance, paling skin, weakened immune systems, muscular pain, oh I could go on

Soldiers collapsing mid battle from using their magic too much

Squad mates holding up their comrade so that they can keep casting magic, despite their weakness and inability to stand for themselves

Watching magic trace through someone's veins before it conjures into reality

Magic whiplash, magic friendly fire, magic misfire? Yes yes and yes

Curses are such a common thing, that they're basically a disability, and yes people discriminate against the cursed of course

A healer whose hands have been atrophied by arthritis after nonstop days of tending to the wounded, their skills growing more jagged and unrefined

kinda hunched over their desk holding a tea towel full of ice from the break room pressed to their forehead. leaning heavily on their elbows. squinting. two drops of blood on their collar

they're so out of it that their coworker (who brought them the ice) has to tap them on the shoulder at the end of the day and tell them that, well, day's over, you can go home. they stand up & the world immediately spins & coworker has to catch them

being in the whump community is genuinely so funny bc someone will unironically say some shit like “i’ve really been into head injuries lately”

Thinking about fevers. Burning hot skin and flushed cheeks and bright eyes. Shivering and painful chills, coughs and laboured breaths. A heart pounding against ribs. Babbling and nonsensical words. Characters spilling secrets or fears they would never admit if they were well. Talking about things that make perfect sense to their feverish mind and world, things that make absolutely no sense to their worried caretakers.

The dizziness and the headaches and the roaring sound of rushing blood in their ears. The restlessness, despite the stabbing pain every movement sends through their body. Limbs like iron weights, heavy and hard to move. Characters pushing and fighting against their caretakers, trying to get up from their place of rest, even when hands push them back down, a cold cloth to the head and soft murmured words of, "Shh, it's okay. Just rest. You're okay."

Sleep deprivation whump, my beloved... When The Character is so, so tired that they're starting to malfunction... so tired that they would do just about anything to sleep...

Have your stoic character start shaking uncontrollably, staggering back into the counter, knocking cups over while they slide down to the floor, staring wide eyed ahead of them. Have their lungs seize and shoulders hitch as they struggle to breathe steadily. Then, have someone find them in that state, and try to help them out of their haze, only for the character to snap out of it, a wave of humiliation crashing over them as they realize theyre breaking down in front of someone, and they are helpless to stop it. I really like it when a character is in so much distress that they start self harming about it. Nails digging into their own skin until they bleed. They might not even be aware that they're doing it, it's like an ingrained automatic response to fear for them.

States of being in pain

Staring at the ceiling, unable to move, unable to think, unable to do anything.

Crying and screaming, not being able to deal with it anymore, but also not being able to get away from it.

Breathing through it and feeling some relief. Okay. I can do this. I'm still in control. I can still handle this. Just breathe. Just focus on your breathing.

Breathing through it and feeling no relief at all. Slowly losing your grip on your coping mechanisms. Decending into panic and desperation. Hyperventilating.

Doing okay with the pain until one small extra thing suddenly completely sends you over the edge.

Rocking back and forth. Trying to sooth yourself and distract yourself. Fidgeting. Biting your lip. Bitting your nails.

Pulling on your hair to create new pain to distract you from the existing one.

Getting dizzy and nauseous just from the pain.

Drifting in and out of consciousness. Welcoming the softening edges of the pain as you're slowly drifting off.

Constant chronic pain that might not be that severe but becomes completely overwhelming to your mind simply because its always there.

Sharp unexpected blunt pain that suprises you and makes you yell out, all of your brain consumed by the sudden wave of agony as adrenaline rushes through your system and you're awareness completely shrinks to the sensation or the injury.

Nervously preparing yourself for pain that's about to come. Trying really hard to stay calm. Trying to remember what helps you get through it. Trying not to give into the rising panic in your chest.

he's traumatised from losing his crew, hence the constant paranoia about grace's health, so hearing grace's vitals freak out like this... terrifying
