Welcome, everyone, to The Wilde Society.

We live in a world that increasingly benefits from us turning off our brains. It's so much easier if we mindlessly scroll; if we let AI do the work for us; if we take the easiest answer and give up our autonomy for thought. It is easier to oppress us if we turn a blind eye and bury ourselves in the sand.

The Society exists to combat this. This server is an oasis in a desert of anti-intellectualism. This is a community for academics, life-long learners, advocates, and anyone who wants to build community with others who are interested in the pursuit of self-education and social justice.

With channels for different subjects, a space for political and social-justice discussions, and a digital library filled with resources, The Society is built to serve the needs of a deeply connected community. And there is space, of course, to simply socialize and enjoy each other's company.

Right now, the server contains just me: a Jewish & queer system looking for like-minded folks who want to discover the world. This means you have the chance to shape the community and help it grow into something beautiful. Anything is possible.

There are only a couple limits to who may join: You must be 18+ for the safety of everyone involved, and you must be ready to encounter diverse backgrounds and ideas. This is not a server to debate human rights - racism, sexism, queerphobia, etc. have no place here.

So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth).  But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven.  To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk.  So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.

In 1986, amidst high unemployment in the Black Country, a group of young childhood friends aged 20 to 23 lost their jobs. Seeking an escape, they scraped together a few hundred pounds each to follow the England national football team 5,000 miles away to Mexico for the 1986 FIFA World Cup and chose to never return home.

A lot of people seem to mix up ‘community’ with ‘friend group’ so when they read ‘no one should be abandoned by the community. No matter what they did’ they think it means ‘you have to be friends with abusers’. You don’t have to be friends with these people, no one is saying that. It’s just saying that you should support rehabilitative justice, support programs that help homeless people, support funding for free medical services, and make sure they don’t turn away anyone who needs help.

Even when people believe you (do they really), all they can say is "it sucks". (it's too big) Because the problem is so big, so pervasive, what can we even DO about it???

To get the necessary laws written and passed, we need politicians, to get the politicians elected we need information campaigns, to fund campaigns we need money, and all the money is being hoarded by the people profiting from enshittification. (it sounds so fake)
