The Many Shades of Violet

There are over 24 species of Viola residing in Pennsylvania. These spring ephemerals come in many other shades than violet, from deep, rich Byzantium purple to pale indigo to blue, yellow, and white. Violets also come in many different shapes – the white violets in my yard and tiny compared to the regular purple violets.

Speaking of my yard, I am a firm believer in not irradicating “weeds” unless they are noxious or invasive. Most of these weeds are beneficial to our native bees and other threatened insects. We mow and remove leaves to cut down on ticks, but otherwise we love watching the wildflowers bloom. First my yard turns purple:

And soon it will turn yellow with cinquefoil and dandelions, and afterwards it will turn white with clover.

Like many other spring ephemera, violets are also medically useful. They are anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants and vitamin C. Popping up at the end of the hunger gap, violet tea can fend off scurvy. That came tea can be applied to the skin to treat inflammation and joint pain [2].

In previous years I collected and dehydrated them, and used them as natural confetti. They will keep their purple color about two years when dried.

Spring Ephemerals

The vernal equinox last week was just a taste of the beauty of spring ephemerals. Living in the woodlands is beautiful but the amount of sunshine is limited. Where the sun is shining is exploding in color. We allow “weeds” like clover, violets, and cinquefoil stick around, and are rewarded with a yard full of blooms. The local bees, butterflies, dragonflies, and lightning bugs love our yard.

Spring Beauty, Claytonia virginica, grows abundantly in the liminal spaces between forest and field. A spring ephemeral, C. virginica blooms only for three days. It is perennial and its starchy roots can be eaten much like potatoes[1].

Grape Hyacinth, by contrast, are not native to my home. Flowers in the Muscari genus come from the Old World, in the Mediterranean basin and the surrounding areas. It has naturalized all over Eurasia and the North America, including my yard. Grape Hyacinths are not true Hyacinths, but actually in the Asparagus family[2].

Last but not least, is the common Dandelion. Ubiquitous everywhere, a nuisance somewhere, but welcomed here. While I haven’t yet tried to eat any part of the dandelion plant, the bees are welcome to it as long as they can spare a few flowers for me. I use it in anti-inflammatory topical creams I make at home.

Taraxacum officinale, or the common dandelion, was native to Eurasia but has now naturalized on every green continent. It was purposefully brought to the United States as a food crop. The roots, leaves, and blooms can be eaten. Many have roasted and ground the roots into a coffee substitute but I have not tried this. Dandelions can be used to flavor wine, make tea, jelly, syrup and more[3].

Happy Spring Equinox!

I am happy to report my Hellebore is healthy and starting to bloom even more. The crocuses are happy, and the mushrooms are starting to fruit! These are shiitakes we inoculated a few years ago.

With all this wind and wild weather we’ve been having, a few old trees fell. Their time had come and luckily they were far away from anyone (except a perplexed squirrel or two). But the circle of life continues and they will begin anew as beloved additions to the mushroom garden.

It might snow again this week, of course, but we’ve already started some seeds indoors. I am starting some more lavender as a companion plant to our apple trees. I have cold stratified seeds from last year as well as fresh seeds that just arrived, and the fresh seeds seem to be doing better than the cold seeds! Perhaps age is more important. Has this happened to anyone else?

March 13th vs March 17th in Western Pennsylvania

My Hellebores started to bloom in early March, and then an arctic blast hit Western Pennsylvania and buried them under four inches of snow. I can’t wait for Spring and warmer weather for outside adventures.

Autumn Flora and a Bit of Fauna

I am, surprisingly, too busy to do much decorating these days. Autumn is the exception: the outlier that proves the rule. I love decorating for fall inside and out. I don’t particularly know why I like fall so much. I think I have the opposite of seasonal affective disorder. I don’t like winter, I dread the extremely long wait for spring here in the Wilds, but I can’t help but be excited when fall comes.

Fall blooming flowers, like this Aster, are then lumped into my favorite plant category because of this (supplanted only by early spring blooms like my Hellebore and Crocus collections). There’s something like rebellion in these plants. They dare nature to give them their worst and they continue to bloom despite the temperature. This exact pumpkin is still going strong even though winter decided to rear its gnarling head early this year. Early for recent years anyway – climate change shortened our winter from Halloween to St. Patrick’s Day in my childhood to a late December and January only affair since the 2010s. That’s what happens when you live at the bottom of the snow belt.
