âIâm insulted that you think I would ever lose voluntarily dobe, especially to you.â Letting Naruto win was the same as saying he didnât believe in him to win on his own, which was anything but true. Sasuke enjoyed pushing Naruto to do his best, it always amazed him how far the blonde could go. The Uchiha was not so naive that he wasnât aware that he, himself, was one of the best motivators for his friend. Naruto would travel around the world ten times over for Sasuke. He never gave up on him, even the last three years, despite what Sasuke had done.
He had never known how to interpret his friendâs dedication. Friend? Brother? That was exactly the problem, there wasnât a word he could think of that encapsulated their relationship. It was beyond the definition of language.
When he declared he would go first, Sasuke nodded, âFair enough.â It was technically for Narutoâs sake, but the truth was tonight was helping Sasuke too. Being back was difficult for him. He would never admit it out loud, but every day was a battle with the darkness that so desperately wanted to claim him again.
The presence of his sun pushed it farther and farther away. So, yes what they were doing was for Narutoâs benefit, but it was just as beneficial for him. He smiled softly, as Naruto yelled at the lifeless colored paper. âIâm sure they are trembling Naruto.â He rolled his eyes as he separated the last batch.
A single dark eyebrow rose at the request. A prize? What kind of a prize would he want? Part of Sasuke didnât trust himself giving Naruto a vague promise such as this, but if it would motivate him to get them all right quicker he would allow the questionable decision. âWithin reason, yes,â he replied.
Sasuke leaned back against the couch to give himself a full view of the layout of notes. âReady? Go.â Only Sasuke would still manage a monotoned, Go.
As the blonde worked, his fingers twitched wanting to intervene when he made mistakes. He pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. Ever since the day he had moved to save Naruto from Haku all those years ago, he had acquired an almost undeniable instinct to aid his friend whenever he saw him struggling. Even when they battled, but he had extinguished the desire every time. Pushing his greater desires to the forefront. Clearly, the effort had ultimately failed.
Now, when he had no greater ulterior motive for letting Naruto flounder, he had a harder time not intervening. The combination of biting his lower lip and pinching his nose were the only things holding him back. They reminded him not to speak, to keep quiet and let Naruto do it. To let him impress him as he had so many times before. Something that always made Sasuke feelâŠsomethingâŠsomething he couldnât place. It was a little more than charming? Attractive?
The idea lingered in his mind. His dark eyes began to look Naruto over. He supposed that the way his bright eyes contrasted with his slightly darkened skin was pleasing to the eye. Or how his blonde hair only furthered this perspective. The uniqueness of his whiskers was rather adorable. What always caught Sasukeâs attention was the emotion in his eyes that always betrayed whatever he was thinking.
He realized that he had tilted his head slightly to the side and leaned forward to stare at the concentrated blonde. He quickly fixed himself back into his previous position and rested a hand on his nose to hide the pink he was almost positive had appeared on his cheeks from the embarrassment he felt from what he had just been doing and thinking.
He kind of expected Sasuke to dismiss him. Asking for a prize was a childish move, then again when he heard the raven compel to his request Naruto didnât hide the gleam of surprise surfacing through his eyes, goosebumps going through his entire body. He blinked with clear disbelief, but shortly he grinned again, rising a fist to the air. Now he felt more than motivated; he would fulfill his word no matter what for that prize!
âPrepare to be amazed!â he declared, full of confidence in his ability to manage the fit he had just promised. Three tries. Only three tries or else he wasnât getting his reward and he would never forgive himself if he failed.
Naruto kneeled, hands lifted in the air as if he was about to pounce. He waited for Sasukeâs incredibly boring signal to start. The blonde would have complained at the lack of enthusiasm shown by the raven, but instead, he was already revising the answers he knew within his mind as a head-start.Â
âHere I go âttebayo!â With his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth, Naruto began his task, eyes flashing with ardent resolution.Â
His first try didnât go as well as he expected. He was glad he hadnât said âfirst tryâ during his prize request, or else he would have been sulking about his defeat for the rest of the night. Fingers moved across sticky notes while he shuffled them away for his second try. Naruto could feel his nerves building up in the depths of his stomach; he knew the answers and yet he was struggling with some names and dates mix-ups. By the end of his second try, he had way fewer mistakes. He was so concentrated that he didnât even notice Sasuke staring and evaluating his efforts.
He took his sweet time during his third try. It was his last one, after all. Cold sweat ran through his face as he slowly moved sticky notes to match answers with questions. Having Naruto be this careful was a rare sight, yet for the blonde, this didnât feel as different as if he were trying to learn to stand still to gather nature energy or concentrate his chakra to create a rasengan. If anything, this level of caution helped him to concentrate enough to not let his own hesitation and doubts cloud his mind.Â
Before he knew it he was done. With hurry, he took the notebook with the answers. His eyes scanned through Sasukeâs almost perfect caligraphy with unease. His lips twitched to form a smile for each time his own answers matched the ones in the notebook. By the time he reached the last written sentence, that perfectly matched his last sticky note, Naruto had a perfect grin painted on face.
âHELL YEAH!!â he yelled louder than he intended, raising both his arms into the air. âLook Sasuke!â He turned to show his friend the result of his efforts, but he was greeted with a sight that left him a little confused.
Sasuke had a hand covering half his face. Naruto narrowed his eyes, standing up with hands on his hips. He quirked a brow and leaned forward, facing Sasuke and invading his personal space.Â
âWhat? Where you about to laugh at me for taking so long? Huh?â he accused, pouting like a child. However, his pout disappeared once he noticed something. Sasukeâs ears were a little red and now that he was looking closer, his cheek looked a little⊠pinkish?Â
Naruto blinked, a little shocked by the sight. Was thatâŠÂ Â
âAre you okay?â Naruto kneeled in front of Sasuke. His hands went to rest on the couch, each at one side of the raven. âYour face is red âttebayo.â There was a very subtle hint of worry in his voice. âWaitâ was it the tea?!â Perhaps the tea leaves he had used had already expired. He drank the same beverage yet he was feeling perfectly fineâŠÂ
