Finally getting around to watching The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie and sitting there kinda dumbstruck (but foolishly so) that the initial scrum in the games is like…intense and violent. That they all start fighting each other.

Because they very extremely notably do not in the book. The games are, quite honestly until the very end, BORING. And that’s like the whole thing. There is constant utter disappointment that the games are not entertaining the audience. Reaper sets up his morgue and spends most of the games sitting in the stands. Everyone kinda hides. I know a lot got cut so we have way more kids still alive by the games than in the book, so therefore more fodder to die in an initial scrum, but like…???

Having them all do avengers action fights on each other instead of be scared kids who grab weapons to protect themselves and run to hide????

I suppose I can’t entirely blame the filmmakers but how do you so spectacularly take on the role of gamemaker where the most central line in the sand is “we must entertain our audience.”

Why did you refuse a really good opportunity to force your audience to be disappointed there is no action, the action youve come to expect from the countdown, and possibly reflect on “hey wait a second, am I really acting like a capitol person?”

The first 3 films really positioned the capitol citizens as so bluntly vapid that the audience automatically relates to the tributes, while makeup brands sell HG inspired pallets and you can vote Team Peeta or Team Gale to win prizes.

And now you have a film that could force your audience to question whether they REALLY are the district rebel or a droning citizen itching for mindless entertainment but you fed them slop instead!
