tfw when u get the ugly version of grandma
@toddnyallison u rite. but like. this one.. is like… a lot.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SHE LOOKS LIKE A GHOST
Holy fucking fuck balls what?? Is???? This????
No matter how many times I play inquisition and no matter how many times the game is repaired or reinstalled, this nasally loser is always fucked up.
@wim-n-wam reblogged your photoset “Actually Alistair @ DAI Nexus
#AHH someone got it to work#nice#where did you find his hair file to edit man i looked for it for like 3 hours…#DAI#Alistair theirin#dai mods
Alllll the hair meshes are in a big unorganized disaster pile in Data\da3\actors\baseheads\hair. If the modding gods have smiled upon you and the character you’re looking for has a unique hair mesh you can put 3-4 letters of their name in the search and it’ll pop up. Regardless of whether you want to edit the mesh itself or the ebx controlling the color the file you’ll want is the skinned mesh asset so you can also filter by that to narrow down the results.
If they don’t have a unique hair mesh (or you’re having trouble finding it) you can also always search for their headmorph in Data\da3\designcontent\headmorphs and that will have the full file path to the hair right up near the top (and clicking the link will open it right up).
Hope that helps :3
AHH THANK YOU!! I was trying to follow a tutorial on the modding forum and was able to find the unique meshes, but no one mentioned any of this. But I saw other people had found it and it was just so frustrating.
I was trying to make my own DAO alistair mod, but between not being able to find the hair file and the face diffuse crashing my game, it never happened haha. Maybe now I'll actually be able to get it to work.
Thanks again!
Actually Alistair @ DAI Nexus
Darker skin tone! Because Alistair is not in fact the whitest person in Thedas!
Darker brown hair color! Because I don’t know what that color was supposed to be originally but it wasn’t our dear Al’s hair!
Visible/more freckles! Because why would they put freckles on his face texture if they’re so light you can’t see them! What a waste of freckles!
More cooler “I spent a year of my life fighting darkspawn and three years ago the Arishok punched me in the face (it was awesome)” facial scar
De-shined, y'all
I finished it.
It’s here.
Are you tired of DA:O’s muddy lighting draining the colour from Ferelden? Fear not! For after hours of trial and error I have countered this for all vanilla skin, hair, and eye colours.
No morphs necessary! It is completely compatible with any texture, morph, etc mods you have.
There are a couple of issues but they are outlined in the mod description.
If Thedas suddenly looks like a more diverse place, it is not because I changed anyone. It’s just because I made what diversity that was already there stand out a little more in an aged game’s terrible lighting. What you will also notice, however, is despite there only being two white skin tints, (three if you count the dead one,) I’d say far more than half of Ferelden uses them.
DOWNLOAD IT HERE! And I’d very much appreciate a reblog if you do. :)
Welp, I see a replay of DAO is in order.
About that post you rebloged: I agree some people take their Vivienne-hate too far and a lot of it has to do with the color of her skin but it's ALSO canon she becomes a tyrant after becoming divine so...
So…?
See here, I’m not exactly sure what point you’re trying to make my dear, but whatever it is I’m sure I disagree.
Lean in closer darling, let me show you something:
This is a version of Cassandra’s disapproval scene.
The first time I played Inquisition, Cassandra hated me, and do you know why?
Because Cassandra disproves of the following:
Supporting mages (also leashing the templars*)
Rejecting Chantry Tradition
Not Coddling her wrong doings.
There’s more, but these are the things I did during my first game..
And do we know why she disapproves? We do!
Cassandra disapproves of me because she doesn’t like change.
She likes tradition and I, Inquisitor Adaar, had no reason to support any of that.
If she wasn’t a core companion, I’m sure she would have left.
But let’s look at what she’s saying here.
Did I really do anything to receive such disdain? To be accused of ‘straddling the world?’ Not really.
She’s angry that I’m changing things and tries to call me out.
She’s disgusted by me.
Let me reiterate:Cassandra views Rejecting Chantry Tradition and Helping Mages to be Evil, Acts because it changes things.
She’s the least progressive of all the Divine candidates and favors bringing the world back to how it was before.
Now, lets look what the Epilogue shall we?
However, [Cassandra] eventually grew disgusted by Vivienne - who she felt was perverting the Chant of Light’s intent - and left the council.
Cassandra doesn’t really call Vivienne a Tyrant so to speak, she says she grew disgusted by her–just like she grew disgusted by my Inquisitor.
We know what Vivienne’s does for the mages as Divine, and we also know what Cassandra finds disgusting based upon how she treats the Inquisitor when they favor change over tradition.
So your readiness to prove that Vivienne is some sort of villain based upon Cassandra’s feelings is, for lack of a better word my dear, bullshit.
Of course Cassandra disapproves–it’s in her character to reject any effort to help anyone who isn’t a Non-Magical Human.
Because the Chantry favors Non-Magical Humans and she follows the Chantry (you see where I’m going with this?)
But yeah, sure, go off I guess.

Even grosser than people shipping Sera with Krem on the basis of Krem’s genitals (god cis fandom, why) is the fact that it’s Sera in particular they’re shipping him with. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sera as a character. But Sera is (so far as I know?) the only character other than the Inquisitor who gets transphobic/cissexist lines. You as the Inquisitor can say all sorts of horrible shit to/about Krem, because damn cis writers are terrible, and can do so without earning any real disapproval from Bull. But Sera has not one but two comments that are either transphobic or cissexist. She makes a comment in the Winter Palace where she points out a trans man and misgenders him. (For no fucking reason!! Why is that line even there except to be awful!!!) And when she first meets a female Herald, she makes an “I thought it’d be bigger” comment about the Inquisition–then she laughs, and says that remark would have been funny if the Herald was a man. The implication of the line is that Sera doesn’t believe women can have penis-shaped genitals.
I’ve never once seen anybody talk about Sera’s transphobia, even when talking about how gross it is to ship her with Krem. I’m aware that most of the blame for this lies with her writer so I usually just retcon those lines while playing because I want to like her. And it’s no surprise that she has those lines, given that she was written by a straight man. She is so clearly sidelined by the writing staff in other ways anyway, given that most of the Herald’s interactions with her don’t give you an option to be nice to her, and she is the one and only companion you can dismiss at any time.
Today is just one of those days where cis fandom (and cis creators in general) are really weighing on me. There’s just so much pointless cissexism involved in the game. They finally made it possible for “male” characters to wear makeup, but there are still no options to give “female” characters facial hair, and they still gave the female characters ridiculous shoulder-waist-hip ratios. It’d actually be EASIER to program it so that you pick your Inquisitor’s gender but can then select from any of the four available voices and two available body types. It takes more programming to make two different character creation screens than to just have one with all the features.
Like yes, I get it. None of the players is supposed to be trans. Nobody playing the game was supposed to know what it felt like to be in Krem’s position, because if the programmers had planned for that, they wouldn’t have written the lines they way they did. No, they wrote Krem for backpats and inclusivity points among other cis people, without consulting nearly enough (if any) trans people on the matter.
It’s also wearying to watch Let’s Plays and have every single player miss the fact that Krem is trans until the dialog options explicitly confront them with it. Yes, the responsibility for that is mostly on the player for their ignorance. But I can’t help but wonder if Bioware made Krem look the way he does for this exact reason, so that they’d have plausible deniability with shitty cis gamers. (And then when shitty cis people DO notice Krem’s trans, the game gives them multiple opportunities to say horrible hurtful things to and about him!!! Because Krem is so, so obviously written by and for cis people!!!!!)
Maeveris Tilani doesn’t escape cis attention either. I’ve only seen one panel of her in the comics, and that was enough to make me nervous about reading the comic itself even despite it featuring a trans woman character. The one panel I saw was of her shirtless and chained up in a dungeon, clearly displaying and focusing on her flat chest. It felt like yet another instance of a cis person’s fixation on trans bodies and what they’re “really like” under their clothes and how “dissimilar” they are from those of their same-gender cis counterparts. GROSSSSSS
I’m so sick of this. I’m so sick of the fact that so many cis artists/writers/fans are like “I’m not transphobic, I drew/wrote about/talked about Krem/Maevaris once!!!!!!” and use their interest in those characters to shield themselves from criticism about their behavior. I’m sick of the fact that I don’t dare read any fic about Krem because almost all of it is disgustingly fetishistic and features misgendering either by the authors or characters or both. I’m disgusted by the fact that people say they like Krem as a character, then draw him shirtless and obviously binding with bandages, even though that’s unsafe AND it’s explicit in the story that he’s a tailor and would undoubtedly make himself a better and more effective binder. His knowledge of sewing is mentioned more than once, so anybody who theoretically “likes” his character rather than just fetishizing him would know that he can sew!! It is indefensible to depict him binding with bandages. You think he could fight without that shit just slipping down and winding up around his waist? NO.
And on top of the fact that it makes NO SENSE for him to bind that way, ‘binding with bandages’ is a dangerous stereotype that actively harms trans men/AFAB enbies/butches into thinking it’s okay to bind that way when it’s not. Clothing specially designed to flatten a chest is uncomfortable and difficult enough to move in, and causes enough physical issues long-term. Bandages are even worse, because they rub and pinch in unpredictable places and cannot be tailored.
Cissexism is such a problem in this fandom that when I signed up for the DA rarepair exchange, in the prompts that included Krem I had to explicitly explain how not to be transphobic because cis authors can never be trusted to write him well without clear instructions. Research, what’s that???? Cis authors in this fandom don’t do any when they write trans characters!
I just. Cis fandom. I follow a lot of cis fans here on tumblr, and I’ve completely given up on calling out all the shit they reblog/post that contains subtle cissexism. Every single day one of them talks about “male bodies” or reblogs something that talks about “women’s bodies” or something similar. Then those same people talk about how much they love Krem and I just give up a little more.
(this turned out super long so there’s I’m gonna add a summary before the great wall of text)
my tldr: Love the characters but they are handled clumsily by cis people at best
Yeah pretty much this. I can’t really talk about the cis fandom in regards to Krem and Mae because I don’t really pay attention to it outside of reblogging the odd fanart or funny post, and when I do talk about these characters it’s normally with people who aren’t cis.
On the actual game though, I think it’s important to note that Patrick Weekes* (who wrote The Iron Bull and by extension Krem) apparently did actually consult some trans people and thank god because he openly admits that the first draft was terrible and transphobic. Apparently, amongst other things, the players would have learned Krem was trans by The Iron Bull outing him in front of everyone and these consultants pointed out that this was a shitty thing to do and a potentially triggering thing for trans players BUT it’s clear we were never the target audience being addressed in this game. The fact that in-game that there’s no way to come across as anything but ignorant or downright rude and dismissive about his gender makes this abundantly clear. I can get the value of using media to try and educate players on the Other but at the same time I don’t want to talk to him about when he was a kid he wore dresses and hated himself, or ask him if he’d have “the surgery”, which in this universe is possible with blood magic or something idk? There’s something about the way he’s handled that creates this image of him being the “good trans” for cis people to pat themselves on the back. It’s such a shame because I actually love Krem. He’s not the most well developed character due to how he fits in the narrative, but what do you get to see that isn’t about him being trans is just adorkable and probably closest to whom I’d actually date in RL than any of the canon LI’s in-game.
I won’t go into the comics since you haven’t read them and I don’t want to spoil but you may be interested to know that that one panel of Mae you remember is basically the only acknowledgment of her being trans in the whole thing. I have no memory of her saying anything about her gender or anyone else mentioning it in the comics, there was just… that panel. :/ She did have this one exchange about knowing yourself and identity with Isabela but that unless you’re trans you might not even notice the relevance. In fact I’m pretty sure a lot of people would have read the whole thing and not thought she was anything but this cisgender female arrogant but well-meaning magister. (not including social media) In some ways I’m dreading seeing how bioware handles trans characters in the future because I know they’re going to fuck up but at the same time I don’t want them to give on trying to include trans characters full stop. I realise there are different writers involved but perhaps Andromeda and secret IP will have a trans character or two and bioware on a whole will have a better idea how to include trans characters with a little more… grace by the time DA4 comes around.
* see this interview for Weekes’ thoughts on Krem, Mae and romancable transgender characters in dragon age
I’m gonna respond to your reblog point by point. I’m salty about these issues, so this is gonna sound cranky, but I promise it’s not at you, @selfinversion. I’m grateful other people are thinking about this, I’m just angry as hell at this whole situation. And there are probably a lot of points where I point out things you already know, but I’m doing this because it needs to be said, not because I think you don’t get that. Hope that’s clear!
“Patrick Weekes* (who wrote The Iron Bull and by extension Krem) apparently did actually consult some trans people and thank god because he openly admits that the first draft was terrible and transphobic.”
So, what you’re telling me is that Patrick Weekes REALLY hates/scorns/fetishizes trans people. Like a lot. This transphobic garbage we have in the game now is the improved, less-hateful version? Wow. WOW. That’s even worse!
“I can get the value of using media to try and educate players”
Yeah, me too. You know how he could have done that? He could have left out or directly addressed the bigotry, because that forces the viewer to either identify with Krem’s anger or be confronted with what it’s like not to treat a trans person like shit. He didn’t have to handhold shitty cis people by reiterating that their nasty garbage is ok. And if Weekes is using Krem to “educate” cis people (on how to be transphobic?) then that just means he made a trans character completely about cis people anyway, which is ciscentrism. You don’t put a fucking trans character into a game and then make that trans character all about cis people if you want representation points.
“There’s something about the way he’s handled that creates this image of him being the “good trans” for cis people to pat themselves on the back.”
Yes, absolutely. That’s my point. I’ve talked about this already before, but ‘The Good Trans’ image always involves putting up with horrible invasive questions from cis people, not getting angry at anything cis people say or think (and your friends not getting angry either–Bull may correct you, but he doesn’t hate you for being a horrible person to Krem, even though they could have easily made those questions a source of disapproval from Bull), and, of course, being a light-skinned binary male trans person who passes as a cis man. Weekes chose the type of trans person who is statistically LEAST challenging for cis people to treat with respect and couldn’t even manage to handle THAT well. Yikes!!
“you may be interested to know that that one panel of Mae you remember is basically the only acknowledgment of her being trans in the whole thing. I have no memory of her saying anything about her gender or anyone else mentioning it in the comics, there was just… that panel. I’m pretty sure a lot of people would have read the whole thing and not thought she was anything but this cisgender female arrogant but well-meaning magister. (not including social media)”
So, you’re saying they pulled a JK Rowling. “Look how great I am for including this LGBT representation which is nothing more than implied and which I only occasionally acknowledge on social media!” As thousands of people have pointed out about Rowling: that’s gross too, and it’s not real representation.
They want the credit of writing a trans character without actually having to confront the cis readers (or themselves) about what being trans is like. I suppose I could give the writers credit for having a trans character without making it about her being trans, but from this group of writers, this just feels like “trans people are exactly like cis people except for their weird gross bodies! Look, I’m a good open-minded writer now and here’s proof!!” And, it shows that yet again, just like Krem, we have a trans character who passes completely as cis without any “unnatural” transition-related help. Which is ridiculous, and doesn’t reflect the experiences of a single trans person I know or have ever known. Talk about holding trans people to an unreasonable standard.
And the fact that there’s only one incident where Mae’s body is visually exploited so that the cis gaze can dissect all the ways she ‘fails’ at womanhood just means that there’s one more incident than there should be.
“In some ways I’m dreading seeing how bioware handles trans characters in the future because I know they’re going to fuck up but at the same time I don’t want them to give on trying to include trans characters full stop.”
I’m right there with you, buddy. I want them to keep trying, to include trans characters who aren’t horribly mistreated or easily palatable for the cis, but I’m fucking terrified of all the ways they can (and almost inevitably will) go wrong with that.
And, after all that, lest anyone doubt: I love Krem as a character, and I like what I know of Mae too. I’m pleased they’re there. When Krem came onscreen and spoke, I had a full-body shock of recognition, because they’d included someone who looked and felt so familiar to me. But Bioware acknowledging my existence without shitting on me TOO much is a pretty goddamn low bar! They can and should do better.
And, as I’ve pointed out before, here’s the real kicker: while I love Krem’s voice actor and think she did a great job, she’s a fucking cis woman. Bioware cast a cis voice actor for Krem–because being trans is just a performance, right? So far as I know, they made NO effort to cast a trans man as Krem’s VA, and they should have. It’s unacceptable to have a cis actor playing trans characters EVER, IN ANY CONTEXT. Cis people should never play trans characters, because cis people playing trans characters just reiterates to cis people that being trans is nothing more than a performance, and that gets trans people (and specifically trans women) killed.
