Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Here’s what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didn’t want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasn’t allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasn’t even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didn’t help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmes’s blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the “right” answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. It’s not about truth when it’s about paying rent. There’s no scientific integrity if you can’t control for human desperation.
btw it is sexy and cool to uplift and admire people who have skills you wish you had without using their ability as a stick to beat yourself with. even and especially if you are jealous of them.
KILL IT ALL WITH FIRE.
My office computer has automatically updated and the damn company sent out an e-mail telling us about *wonderful new* copilot now installed and UNREMOVABLE. STUPID USELESS PIECE OF SHIT TECH POPPING UP ON EVERY PROGRAM. CAN'T GET RID OF IT.
PISSING ME OFF.
But yeah, at least I could access and disable this feature.
‘capitalism works’ factoid actually untrue. the 62 people who own half the world’s wealth are outliers and should be eaten.
Absolutely nuts how they made up a number for this satire post and the correction is that reality is *more absurd* than the number they chose
no it’s worse. 62 was correct in 2016 when the original post was made.
something something capitalism satire always gets one upped by lived experiences?
These sentences don’t say the same thing with different numbers, though? First one says, if we add up the world’s wealth in pick-a-currency equivalent and divide by two, 62 people own one half and and approximately 7.2 billion people own the other half. Second one says, if we sort the world’s population by how much wealth they have and then add up the top eight and the bottom 3.6 billion, those two groups own the same amount.
just like. for the crowd.
here's the sexual content guidelines saying nudity is ok
here's the bit from the termination email telling you you can make a new account as long as it doesn't break the same rule
here's the guidelines for what counts as explicit (not mature, aka grounds for content deletion)
here's the section telling us that you will always be able to respond to content getting flagged as explicit (lie)
here's the section where it says you will be notified when your accunt gets terminated, and that the appeals are reviewed by humans (both lies)
and by the way, posting a single thing against ToS isn't supposed to be grounds for deletion, (this is what the termination email is warning you about)
sharing content without content labels isn't either
they don't even let you add content labels to reblogs of posts you didn't add content to, either. you also used to be able to manually flag your blog as mature, but now only tumblr staff can - the toggle for it in the settings doesn't even show up until staff has locked it on
Normal American Guy: have you seen what these "transgenders" are sexualizing? they're reenacting childhood experiences. it's disgusting and un-american.
Every Good Ol' American Rock Song: 🎸🎤 I can't stress enough how much this girl is underage 🎸 🎶
Shout out to trans women who aren’t computer scientists or musicians or avant-garde artists or whatever.
Shout-out to tgirls who work at Taco Bell. Thank u queen, society would collapse without you
Over twenty years ago my big brother got me a job at a Taco Bell in the St. Louis suburbs-West County. He warned me that it was the “gay Taco Bell”, but since I was coming from the “gay Howard Johnson’s” I wasn’t shocked. It turns out it was the black trans women Taco Bell complete with black trans women in management. And they’d worked out an arrangement with the local teen Narcotics Anonymous group so that twice a week we would shut down the drive thru and the dining room and exclusively serve 60+ teens in various stages of recovery. And many of the women I worked with were in various stages of being out or transitioning and they were from all generations from teens to over 50. One woman I worked with had a regular corporate job presenting as a man 9-5 Mon-Fri and then came to Taco Bell and worked 6pm -2am Friday and Saturday night so she could be herself surrounded by other black transwomen in those stolen weekends. And we had customers come from all over the metro area because they knew they could be themselves in the dining room. I only worked there from 1999-2001 but for young me, this was a vital, formative experience. Some of the girls came from north city all the way out to the “gay Taco Bell” on Manchester in west county because they heard it was safe to work there. Like- I know times have changed but they haven’t changed much in 20 years. I’m still convinced that for lgbt youth, finding a job at your city’s version of the “gay Taco Bell” is key to survival.
Thank u for sharing this with us
sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.
ditto cockney accents being used to denote stupid and evil. why are you acting like someone who talks like a member of the working class is irredeemable and an idiot.
So I listen to a podcast called History That Doesn't Suck, and during episodes that took place too long ago for recordings to exist, the host assigns voices to each person so you can tell who's who when documents are being read. This includes doing accents for a lot of people--French people get French accents, the Founding Fathers get an approximation of what we think their accent sounded like, and so on.
Naturally, when he did the Civil War, people from the South had southern accents. He even did his best to make sure the accent matched the part of the South the person was from! (He was only partially successful, but it was a genuine and sincere effort.)
The "southern accents are dumb" stereotype is so ingrained he got a letter from a listener in the South asking why he made Jefferson Davis sound like an idiot.
So we're clear: Jefferson Davis was a repugnant human being, but he was also accomplished and intelligent. He had a respected military record before he became a traitor, and indeed "he used to be so good" was one reason Lincoln was like "I won't be mad if he gets away before we have to go to trial." He didn't become President of the Confederacy by being stupid.
He certainly said things that make him sound stupid to modern ears. But it was his words and his poor performance as a commander-in-chief, not his (educated-guess) accent that made him sound that way. And someone who shared that accent thought the accent made him sound even worse.
It's a stereotype we need to break. It's utterly unfair.
since it’s pride month, throwback to this beautiful cover and this wholesome interaction between two icons
I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
#yes! cynicism reads as very juvenile to me#and yes prev often stemming from teen pain
Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"
I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.
