this is one of the best characters in dgs. his introduction makes him seem SO suspicious. tells you before your own murder trial to say "i am" to a question the judge will ask you, not telling you what it is aside from "the question isn't 'are you the murderer'". your best friend and lawyer says "i should have known you'd try to pull that horseshit here. you also find out he and the victim (a foreigner from england) were friends and hes the one who invited him to work here. after the first case he does not show up again for the entire game but in the last case your assistant (his daughter) received a telegram that he's ill and has to travel all the way back to japan. he's fine nothing actually happened. he helps his daughter break a sexist law by creating a lawyersona so she can defend her friend in a murder trial. he also is actually bros with the judge so they could get away with her disguise. hes still suspicious as hell though because of the whole "faking an illness to make you come home" thing. one guy his daughter met in england said that he thinks it has something to do with something they found in england that freaked him out. then he goes to england too with his bro the judge. then you find out hes actually your formerly dead best friend's foster father. and then you found out he kind of lied to your formerly dead best friend about his biological father's death because that guy was executed for a crime he may or may not have done in england. and then you find out when he was in england he was your weird/roommate sort of mentor who is also sherlock holmes's partner which means he's actually watson. he also maybe has an illegitimate daughter who thought a different guy is her dad. hes really good at dancing. he's really bad with having serious conversations that can hurt people. he actually is not the father of that illegitimate child he just delivered her after her parents died and then raised her for a short while with sherlock holmes.

Re: my observation that the average undergraduate now seems to have much greater familiarity with Homeric epic and at least some Greek literature (esp. tragedy) than with the Aeneid or any Roman material, I think thereâs a myriad of things at work here but at least one is that weâve reverted to this weird cultural construct where ancient Greek myth and literature is viewed as universal while Roman literature is viewed as particular and this affects what books are taught e.g. in high school and college English classes but also what gets mined for retellings. and I also think Roman material is often imagined as being more deeply implicated in the ideological framework of patriarchal western imperial society and like, in some cases perhaps thatâs fair, but I would argue as a literary historian that Roman poetry is precisely where we see the cracks forming in Roman gendered imperialism just like Greek tragedy is where we see the cracks forming in Athenian gendered imperialism. whether we want to commit to any idea of authorial intent is a different question but imo itâs impossible to read e.g. Roman elegy or pastoral or even Lucan and come away with the pop-culture idea of the iconic masculine Roman subject (hell, I think even the Aeneid questions the conventional notion of masculine Roman virtus that Lucan absolutely shatters, but thatâs another discussion)
anyways this also gets combined with a dynamic thatâs really maddening to me as a classicist where anything Roman is almost exclusively gendered as masculine in popular culture (see the Roman Empire meme, but also the subculture of Jordan Peterson bros roleplaying as stoics and reading or pretending to read Marcus Aurelius) whereas on the Greek side we have Anne Carsonâs Sappho translations and a total saturation of feminist rewritings of Greek myth, Homeric epic, and tragedy. this is actually really weird from the perspective of a Roman social historian, given that women are far more visible in Roman material (esp. from the 1st century CE onward) than they are anywhere in classical Greek society, and it has the consequence that Roman poetry (except, like, Lucretius I guess) gets sidelined because the types of dudes that are going to maybe read Marcus Aurelius or Tacitus are definitely not going to read Catullus or Vergilâs Eclogues or even the Aeneid given that poetry itself is often gendered as feminine in the 21st century popular imagination, and the types of non-classicists who like Anne Carsonâs Sappho and feminist approaches to Greek myth are also probably not going to read Roman poetry

Sometimes I have what I call "New Towel Blindness," which is basically where I forget I'm an adult with adult money that I can exchange for goods and services I would like, like say new towels instead of continuing to use my grandparents' hand-me-down towels they gave me when they downsized and I was in college.
And it is definitely one of those things exacerbated by growing up poor and then being a super poor twentysomething, but I think it's something many of us fall into.
Anyway today I bought a bra that doesn't cause my boobs physical pain, a purse in my style instead of continuing to use the poorly sized not-my-style purse I'd been gifted, and joined a gym because I remembered I can just give someone money in exchange for them teaching me how to lift weights instead of thinking "gosh strength training would be good to do as my body ages I wish I knew how."

At my previous apartment I spent months plugging in my bedside lamp every night and unplugging it the next morning because using the nearest plug made the cord stretch across the middle of the room. Then I remembered extension cords exist and I went and got one for $5 and it was great.
Sometimes you don't even need to spend money to improve things, they just need to be rearranged! At my current place I don't like setting my water glass down on the hard stone bathroom counter top, so I'd been balancing it on a tin of ointment, but then I remembered I have coasters.
A while ago the handle broke off a bottle of cleaning solution, and I spent multiple cleaning sessions painstakingly trying to line up the broken nub with the place it's supposed to press and juust managing to get it to spray. Recently I remembered I can pour the stuff into a new empty spray bottle from the dollar store! Wow!

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.
We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.

Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.

Iâve personally used both the flat single-filter version AND the triangular two-filter version, and based on subjective personal experience I would argue that the benefits from the second filter, both in terms of airflow and filtration, are absolutely worth it. If you need a makeshift air filter and you have two filters to work with, build the triangle (if not the box, i have no idea how good that one works but based on the info here i presume itâs a fair bit better.)
Something nobody prepares you for is that the better you get at writing the harder it becomes. beginners write freely because they don't know enough to know what's wrong. then you learn. and suddenly you can see every single flaw in real time as you're making it and you have to write anyway while your own brain is in the corner going "that's a weak verb. that transition is lazy. you've used that word three times." getting good at this is mostly just getting better at ignoring yourself.

I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.
Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.
So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.
Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.
Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming đ”âđ«
Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.

found the post. to be fair to them. not the most egregious thing said on this post, but they did endorse the rest of it so.
ignoring "horny frat boys" being an insane way to describe percy, byron, and polidori, not to mention poor fucking claire lmao. theres a pervasive issue of people really wanting mary shelley's life and career to be a story of a woman being greatly underestimated and silenced by her (male) peers but persevering nonetheless and this idea is generally pushed in popular culture and by some ill informed biographers to the point that it is just no longer reflective of her actual experiences. i think people forget a lot that mary shelley existed in radical circles that, while not devoid of misogyny, had moved past the idea that women shouldn't have opinions and be writing and have lives outside of their relationships with men and who certainly were not discouraging her from pursuing a career in writing. she was deeply admired for being the daughter of wollstonecraft and godwin and then as a writer in her own right, and i think its sad that this idea that she was discouraged from pursuing writing by the men in her life, especially by her husband, is so pervasive because one of the most interesting things about her social group to me is the creative relationships built among them. people joke a lot that percy shelley is just remembered as the wife of the author of frankenstien as a diss on him but everything he is on record saying about her work implies that he would be fucking honored. they had a deep creative partnership and mutual admiration for one another's work that was much stronger than even their romantic relationship and its deeply frustrating how that is often disregarded and put down because people are so fixated on this stereotype of how they think 19th century women should exist that they dont let themselves engage with what her life was actually like.
