Two Women Teaching a Child to walk by Rembrandt.
Circa 1640, sketch
British Museum, London
There’s a drawing by Rembrandt, I think it’s the greatest drawing ever done. It’s in the British Museum and it’s of a family teaching a child to walk, so it’s a universal thing, everybody has experienced this or seen it happen. Everybody. I used to print out Rembrandt drawings big and give them to people and say: “If you find a better drawing send it to me. But if you find a better one it will be by Goya or Michelangelo perhaps.” But I don’t think there is one actually. It’s a magnificent drawing, magnificent.

The head donut is the baby proofing. We put rubber over sharp corners, they put a donut on the baby’s head.
The one below is from the Met and is from the early 19th century. As you can see in the drawing, the design didn’t change much from Rembrandt’s time. According to the Met, they were called bumpers or pudding caps.
Next up: the heron! Another from this series.
[ID from Alt: A stylized drawing of a great blue heron. It is drawn with color pencil and marker, with a heavy emphasis on hatching for texture. End ID]

Gandalf, taking a hit from his joint: Did you guys know that mithril is super expensive? Like insanely valuable? That it’s very much a finite resource mostly plundered from the earth and invaluable due to its many uses? And also Sauron has most of it so it’s now lost to its Elven and Dwarvish makers? And to think Bilbo’s precious gift of mithril mail is probably sitting in the local Useless Dumb Artefacts Museum. Just makes you think lol ...
Gimli, a dwarf who has lost most of his people’s cultural artefacts: ... I’m sorry Bilbo was given what and did what with it
Frodo, secretly wearing Bilbo’s mithril mail at that very moment but only after nearly 70 years of it sitting in the Useless Dumb Artefacts Museum gathering dust because Bilbo had no idea his cool shirt was worth approximately the net value of their entire country:

He definitely did, but since the whole book is supposed to be a translation of something he found and not something he personally wrote, they’re switched for the audience’s convenience. There’s a lot more to it, but here’s a chart of Shire months from the appendices at the end of RoTK. Elves and men are different, but there was no handy chart.
Happy… [squints] Winterfilth, everybody
I like when little kids lie not to be malicious but because they’re literally figuring out how true/false conditions work. Like they learn to talk and then they’re like wait… I can just say ANY words, huh.
Sometimes when a child tells a “random” lie I just behave as if I accept their statement unequivocally and 9/10 times within five minutes they’re like “miss Study 🥺🥺🥺 I am so sorry. I lied to you. My dog ISN’T actually purple and older than my grandpa😔😔😔”
very disappointing when someone says "the bird app" and for one lovely moment I think they are talking about Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab, the free app that allows you to identify birds by appearance or sound, make a list of birds you have seen, and explore all the birds native to your region.... and then I realize they are talking about twitter.
That was Dale Gribble
yk what I love? that the first text we have written by a woman in England was a Roman woman inviting her best friend to her birthday
it’s from Claudia Severa to Sulpicia Lepidina and dated to around 97-105 AD. I find it so comforting to know that even almost 2000 years ago people had friendships like these and wanted to spend their birthday together.
We aren’t so different from each other after all
Happy Birthday Claudia Severa!!!!!!
[image description: screenshot of the Roman Inscriptions of Britain website entry, linked above, containing an English translation of the inscription described above. Front of object reads: Claudia Severa to her Lepidina greetings. On 11 September, sister, for the day of the celebration of my birthday, I give you a warm invitation to make sure that you come to us, to make the day more enjoyable for me by your arrival, if you are present (?). Give my greetings to your Cerialis. My Aelius and my little son send him (?) their greetings. [m2] I shall expect you, sister. Farewell, sister, my dearest soul, as I hope to prosper, and hail. Back of object concludes: [m1] To Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of Cerialis, from Severa. /end description.]
Given that this letter was certainly using the Julian calendar, as it was written prior to the Gregorian calendrical reforms of the 16th century, Claudia Severa’s birthday is actually not on what we would consider the 11th September. However, as this letter was written only about ~145 years after the Julian calendar’s establishment, the drift was very small—and in fact it’s only off by one day. By our reckoning, Claudia Severa’s birthday is actually the 10th of September. Happy slightly belated birthday, Claudia Severa! I hope it was a good one!
i have midterms tomorrow and here i am
