Okay this took me embarrassingly long to figure out but, your character needs a thing they do that has nothing to do with the plot. A specific, weird, small habit. She counts stairs. He can't throw away receipts. She reorganises the fridge when she's anxious. It doesn't matter. It doesn't go anywhere. But the moment you give someone a habit that serves no narrative purpose they stop being a character and start being a person. And the reader can feel that difference immediately even if they can't name it.
frodo getting criticized for decades for not doing much / not being a hero compared to sam is fitting when you consider mental health and strength is often trivialized. frodo carried the most dangerous and insidious item in middle earth for YEARS. ancient beings (elves, gandalf, etc) were taunted and tempted by it. boromir was corrupted within weeks without even touching it. men and hobbits turned against their brethren for it. killed for it. and frodo, with a wound from a morgul knife, bore it’s weight when no one else could. had it been anyone else, middle earth would have fallen.
no, he couldn’t have done it without his samwise. but isn’t that a lesson in itself?
"sex should be less stigmatized and talked about more" and "you should always make sure people who dont want to consume sexual media that you present dont have to see it" are two statements that can and should coexist. by the way.

Bilbo tries massaging Thorin’s shoulders out of habit and is genuinely horrified when he feels that they are as hard as diamonds. He spends an entire evening getting all the knots out of his husband’s shoulders and upper back. Afterwards, he turns to scold Thorin for letting it get that bad and finds that Thorin is deep in slumber, snoring quietly.
“You silly oaf,” Bilbo whispers, planting a kiss on his temple and tucking him in.
Fic idea: the HTTYD "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you," but it's Bilbo passing away and finding Thorin sitting on the steps of Mando's hall where he's been for 60+ years. He refused to go to Mahal because he couldn't take the chance of not seeing Bilbo again.
To pass the time on long rides, Bilbo starts absent-mindedly braiding Myrtles mane. He does it almost subconsciously and is completely unaware of all the dwarf eyes keenly watching him.
Because they're good braids, some of them quite complicated and no one can understand just how he knows how to do that.
The only conclusion they could come to is that the hobbit must have a paramour back in The Shire, some long-haired lass who he spoils with pretty love-braids.
Thorins temper had been truly foul after Balin had proposed the theory out loud.
After weeks of Thorin sulking, it was ever curious: Ori, who finally asked where Bilbo had learned such intrecate braid work.
Bilbo then flushed and embaressedly explained that he'd learned it from competitive pie decorating.
Au where Thorin attempts to raise dwobbit Frodo on his own without Bilbo knowing they have a son.
When Bilbo eventually finds out and storms into Erebor demanding answers, it's honestly Thorin's saving grace. Turns out he was *not* prepared for the appetite of a growing faunt.
Thorin: "I don't know what to do Amrâlimê, he already eats FIVE meals a day!"
Bilbo: "You've ONLY been feeding him five meals a day!?!?"

I really enjoy the Thorin needing glasses headcanon so here’s my take:
After the rebuilding of Erebor, an opticians office opens. Bilbo INSISTS that Thorin gets his eyes checked, since he learned from the journey that this man was absolutely close to legally blind.
Thorin, begrudgingly, goes along with Bilbos demands, and to the surprise of no one, he absolutely needs glasses.
Soon after, he receives said glasses. He surveys the room, so shocked to be able to perceive the finer details around him.
And then he sees Bilbo.
By god. He was the most beautiful thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Prettier than gold. Than jewels. Than…anything, perhaps.
Bilbo notices Thorin’s eyes widening, as if in paralyzing shock.
“What’s the matter, love?”
“Ghivashel…”
Thorin cups his face and takes an even closer look.
“If I had known that you were truly this beautiful, I would have asked for your hand long ago…” he says, kissing Bilbo’s hand.
Bilbo blushes profusely.

Dwarven braids are notoriously complex, carrying deep meanings about status, family, and victory. Bilbo, with his soft, round Hobbit fingers, is utterly baffled by them. One morning, determined to learn, Bilbo asks Thorin to teach him. The terrifying King under the Mountain sits patiently on the floor for two hours, completely still, while Bilbo accidentally knots his hair, pulls too hard, and mutters Shire curses. Thorin's advisors are horrified later that day when the King walks into a throne room meeting with a completely crooked, messy, lumpy braid held together by a bright yellow ribbon from a Shire jam jar but Thorin wears it with the pride of a conqueror

frodo and sam’s love for each other is literally the only thing keeping middle earth from just spontaneously combusting
No, but like, that’s literally it. Gandalf straight-up says to Elrond this Quest can’t succeed by force or wisdom, but by friendship. If Frodo and Sam hate each other even a little, Middle-Earth is doomed.
And it gets more terrifying when you realize that one of the strongest powers of the Ring is to turn people against each other, and that even if it didn’t, the Ring and the Quest still put Frodo in a psychological state where he can barely keep himself sane, let alone love anyone or anything other than the Ring. In fact, I’m fairly sure the Ring tried to persuade Frodo to kill Sam far more often than the books shows - the Ring tends to encourage murder, from what we see. Instead of listening to the Ring, Frodo somehow manages to keep in the back of his mind that he can trust Sam more than he can trust himself, and I have no idea how Frodo can resist the temptation to think his trust is misplaced.
And sure, one could say, “Oh, but Sam has to understand it, so it’s not all that bad” but you have to remember Sam is a plain, non-Tookish hobbit with no inclination or skills for adventuring around and yet he has to become the entire Fellowship. Name one thing the Fellowship did for Frodo that Sam doesn’t also do. He has to advise, guide and protect him as well as keep his hope alive and remind him of who he is. The amount of pressure he’s under is incredible, and unlike, say, Aragorn, he has no experience to draw from. Plus, Merry and Pippin tend to rely on each other, while Frodo relies on Sam, but Sam himself hardly seems to have anyone to turn to for strength. I’m not saying Frodo doesn’t support him as well as he’s able - actually, Frodo is remarkably consistent about taking care of Sam from Book I to Book VI. But what Frodo is capable to offer (see the paragraph above) is far from being all that Sam needs. And actually, in the last stages of the Quest, Sam is basically living a one-sided relationship under the worst possible conditions, and that his devotion doesn’t even waver despite that just blows my mind.
That the Quest was successful is one of the most incredible and beautiful things that Tolkien wrote. Frodo and Sam walked straight into the Land where no love can exist and managed to become closer to each other than they had been. It’s the biggest fuck you Sauron probably ever got. No, seriously. Frodo and Sam beat a Maia basically by cuddling a lot and talking about food. Like, what the fuck??? I mean, if I told you someone could write a 1000 pages novel in which a pacifist and his gardener beat a minor god via supporting each other emotionally, would you believe me?
It’s classic Tolkien: the surprise element (i.e. flawed creatures can be incredibly noble even under unspeakable distress) might overcome even the most carefully thought out plots devised by powerful evil lords. (See also: the entire Silmarillion, pretty much.)
