There's a post going around Tumblr about how if you're post-menopausal and have bleeding, you should get it checked by your doctor. I brought some minor bleeding I'd had up in a doctor visit earlier this year, prompted by that post, and this week, after a biopsy, I found out I have cancer. It's early stage and the survival odds at 5 years are 99%. I have an oncologist appointment and we may have caught it early enough that surgery alone will be sufficient treatment (no radiation/chemo).

So that post may have saved my life and it may have made my treatment a lot easier too.

If you get into menopause and then start bleeding again, really, get your reproductive innards checked out. The life you save may be your own.

As a biologist, that is a fantastic comparison.

We talk about “fish” (which, cladistically, do not exist, there is no monophyletic group of “fish” that simultaneously includes all organisms we understand to be “fish”-like while also excluding, say, humans) because, despite the utter fiction that is fish, it’s still a useful label when we talk about certain features that “fish” tend to have in common.

Gender is absolutely the same way.

My example is always the platybus.

Does it make sense to differentiate between mammals and animals that lay eggs? Yes, absolutely! Totally valid categories that fit in many cases and help us communicate about what kind of animal we have here.

Do we make plans to exterminate all platypuses because they do not fit in those categories and that makes us really nervous because we like if things fit into the structures we have come up with?

No, we don't! We give it an extra text box in the biology book to explain that in the end classification is a man made structure we tried to put on a very complex natural thing and we can try to adapt that structure to make it fit nature but it's not nature that can be expected to develop in a way that it fits our structure.
