“oho, i’ve been wanting to cross blades with you.”
your grip around the wooden handle of your training sword slacked. after a long day of training, you were certain someone like kaeya would surely be easy to spar with.
this was long, long ago–before the two of you were considered actual knights. the instructors were weeding out the last of their candidates, and there was no way in hell you were going to group yourself with the half-assed knights-in-training. the captains felt certain kaeya would become a knight, much like his brother, so it wasn’t uncommon for him to grow lazy by the end of the day.
his firm, crystal blue eyes reflected the setting sun behind you, the two of you wrapping in a hazy, orange glow.
“you prefer to speak with your sword, eh? well, come at me.” his cocky smirk aside, you knew better than to underestimate him.
eyes were on you. ever so charismatic and unpredictable, you knew being in his presence always brought along attention, which is why you prefer not to associate with him.
your shoulders stiffen, heart beating rapidly in your chest, and yet you hadn’t even taken a step forward. the whispers around the two of you weighed heavy in your mind as you dig your heel into the ground. he would come to you, not the other way around.
a glint of acknowledgement in his eyes, he charges, his wooden sword ripping through the air. you were faster, pivoting on the heel of your foot to evade. his sword quickly angled diagonally, but came into contact with your block, a deep *thunk* resonating in the contact between the wood.
your swords met again and again, and just when you thought you had the advantage, you failed to follow up with a parry.
he caught onto your miscalculation sooner than you, taking your moment of weakness to bring his sword down and strike at your ankle, causing you to lose your balance and fall backwards.
“dammit!” you hissed as you made contact with the ground, your sword escaping your grip. Kaeya triumphantly stood over you with his perpetual smirk, tapping your forehead with the tip of the sword. “well played. i believe this is the first time i’ve heard your voice.”
he pulled his sword back, reaching out to you with his other hand to help you up. begrudgingly, you accept, but you don’t respond to his last comment.
“perhaps i overestimated your abilities?” he says, walking alongside your futile attempt to leave the grounds on your own. your expression hardens, and he laughs. “don’t look at me like that, i’m only teasing!”
ignoring the way your eyebrows furrow, kaeya continues. “i worked up quite a sweat against you. how about we spar together more often?”
he’s met with silence.
his eyebrow quirks. “nervous? don’t be. what about a new, polished sword in exchange for your time on the field?”
you stop in your tracks.
it’s a deal.
you’ve always been very perceptive of your surroundings. while kaeya wasn’t anyone special, you noticed the way he was able to talk his way through almost anything–including your tough exterior, which you realized far too late.
“nooo, i can handle one more, come on!!” if it weren’t for the bustling weekend crowd, the drunkards across the tavern would’ve been able to hear kaeya’s whines.
“you’ve drank enough. rosaria, i’m cutting off your drinks too,” diluc, the more composed of the two ragnivindr brothers, smoothly took the bottle of “death afternoon” off the counter as he continued on his way to the storage room.
sat between your two alcoholic friends, you mark a tally on your notepad—a thin, straight stroke to go along with the 13 other tallies under rosaria’s side. a measly eight strokes adorned kaeya’s side. he was about 13 drinks in, with the 14th taken by his “fun-spoiling” brother, but with his speech beginning to slur at the 8th drink, you decided that was his mark of defeat.
“rosaria wins. again.” you state this with no emphasis, no surprise. it was impossible for rosaria to get drunk, no matter how many drinking competitions kaeya begs to have with her.
rosaria, completely unphased, took another sip of her drink. “you would think he learned his lesson by now.”
meanwhile, kaeya’s drunken rambles grow increasingly fervent. “how—my own brother! this is so unfairrr!” he complains rather dramatically, his arms waving around over the bar.
“kaeya, it’s your bedtime,” you tease, stepping down from your seat off the counter, slipping your coat on. he protests and whines, but his intoxicated self does little to fight back as you drag him away from the bar. rosaria gives you an apologetic look as the both of you nod your goodbyes to each other.
“are y’gonna read me a bedtime story?” kaeya’s words slur, a mischievous glint in his (now singular) eye.
you roll your eyes, supporting his stumbling frame against your shoulder. “whatever. keep moving.”
he continues to ramble about how much diluc spoils all of his fun, and how he’s “for sure” going to win against rosaria next week. he keeps himself plenty entertained, even with your lack of responses.
suddenly, he stops, holding an arm over his stomach.
this isn’t the first time, and likely not the last.
cursing under your breath, you hurriedly lead him to a hidden alleyway. almost instantly, he keels over, the contents of his stomach dumping out into the dirt.
you move his hair away from his face with one hand and soothingly pat his back with the other. “you overdid it again,” you mumble, the acidic scent of vomit and pungent alcohol.
you look behind you at the street, then back to kaeya. “don’t worry, no ladies are around.”
his response of a weak laugh is cut off by another heave, though nothing comes out.
a slight tinge of guilt rests in the bottom of your stomach, and it begins to rise to the back of your throat.
with another laugh, more sober than before, he keeps his head low, a trail of saliva falling from his lips to the earth below. “i’m glad you’re here.”
“where’s that coming from?” you can’t really make out his expression. you let go of his hair, tearing fabric from your coat, then offering it to him.
with a bit of hesitation, he accepts, using the fabric to wipe his face. “you didn’t have to.”
“it’s fine. i’m…sorry. i should’ve stopped you after the eighth drink.”
“no need for an apology,” he chuckles, lifting his head. “how about you tag along in my rematch against rosaria?”
how childish. ignoring the corners of your lips quirking up, you stand up, offering a hand to kaeya. “let’s go home first.”

Shinjiro had looked everywhere he could think in the dorm. Steely eyes scanned over his room for a fourth time. He barely left the space, and he knew it wasn’t downstairs, he had checked the roof. The man felt a shudder run down his spine, his hands shook as his inability to manage his temperature chilled him significantly.
He tried to think, pacing in his room to try and generate more heat. There was one possible place. Did you have his coat? Your room completely slipped his mind during the ordeal of searching for his prized coat. But Shinjiro didn’t remember leaving it in your room. Still, he groaned, pulling open his room door to go check.
He quickly found himself in front of your door, loudly knocking with a shaky hand. He waited a beat for a response before he knocked louder, harder. Despite how the chill made his knuckles feel painfully stiff. He heard quiet shuffling on the other side, taking a half step back as you opened your room door, only poking your head out.
“Hey Shinji!”
“Where is it?” His voice was colder than he intended it to be, but he was freezing, and he really needed his coat. You raised a confused eyebrow before it dawned on you, a sheepish smile crossing your face as you stepped back to let him into your room. Shinjiro entered quickly, closing your door behind him before he looked at you fully.
He stopped mid opening his mouth, quickly closing it again.
You were wearing his coat.
It suited you well. The colour was nice, the fit was nice, if a bit loose given he wore one larger than his own size. But it was his, and he was cold.
“Don’t I look cute?” You teased, rubbing the back of your neck with that same bashful smile.
“Yes, now hand it over.”
Shinjiro didn’t care about appearances, the effects of the suppressants were getting to him, as much as he hated them. You could see him shaking, even with his arms crossed over his chest, nearly hugging himself, with his chin almost hidden by his turtleneck.
You brought your hands up, unbuttoning his coat and sliding it off of your warm body. You held it out to him and your boyfriend took it quickly, pulling it over his sweater and pulling it closed to continue hugging himself. He knew you felt bad, he could read it on your face, he averted his eyes from your face.
He wasn’t the easiest man to date, that was for sure. It’d taken some time before he came up to you days after rejecting you to give you a chance. And that was a lot for him, you knew that. But you also knew how to peek beneath the surface of his exterior. The one he so cleverly crafted.
He watched as you pulled the blankets back on your bed before you sat on the edge. Then you held your arms open wordlessly. Shinjiro looked around, as if somebody could possibly be hiding in your dorm room. He then kicked his boots off, also wordless as he nearly threw himself into your arms.
“Oof-”
Shinjiro melted into you, opening his coat to engulf you in it and wrap his arms around you as best as he could in the position. You wanted to laugh as you struggled to tug him onto the bed and on top of you properly. But you managed with his shaking aid. You flailed slightly, grabbing the blankets after a few attempts and pulling them over your bodies.
“But you can’t stay, we already got in trouble for last time.”
“Fuck that.” His voice was muffled by your skin, his face buried against your neck. “I don’t care. They won’t kick us out, they need us.” That much was true, and you relaxed underneath his weight. He wasn’t very heavy anyway, it wasn’t difficult. You could feel how cold he was, but beneath the blankets, it was a cold that wouldn’t last very long.
“Fine.. But you’re buying me dinner tomorrow, Shinji.”
“Deal, now hold me.” Shinjiro always managed to sound rough, even as he was blatantly demanding your affection. Definitely not the easiest man to date, but the one you fell for. Happily so.

a/n: hi chat i am in my crashout era bc i’ve been having a writers block so everything i churn out is kinda shit quality! the prompt generator did not help! but maybe this will aid my fellow shinjiro fans in your daydreams. i always say i will proofread but i cannot ever re-read my own writing without fighting the urge to delete it so this will stay ass. also i picked centipedes bc i fucking hate them and i know they’re hella common in mainland japan. i’m from southern jp though so i’ve only ever had to encounter geckos and giant spiders. maybe writing abt him pregnant will cure my writer’s block idk.
“i need you to come to my room.”
“…what?” you mumble, fresh out of sleep, your thoughts still hazy. it was about 8am on a sunday—the only day you could sleep in—and yet your sleep was disturbed by your boyfriend, shinjiro. you mean this out of love, of course.
“come to my room. now.”
“at least say please,” you yawn, groggily sitting up. “what’s wrong? do you just miss me or somethin-“
“no.” his response was curt. “i just need you to come to my room. please. i’ll explain once you’re here.”
well, you certainly didn’t appreciate his attitude, but you know he didn’t mean it. it’s very difficult for him to properly articulate his emotions, but you’re willing to meet him halfway. “i get it, it’s hard for you to ask for cuddling, but-“
“i-it’s not that!” though he does sound flustered, you can still sense an underlying panic in his voice. “it’s… well… something is in here-“
“a shadow?” you cut him off. shadows only happen during the dark hour, but is it possible for one to show up outside of-
“no,” he says, his voice slightly above a murmur. you can barely hear him through the phone. “it’s a centipede.”
“…a centipede?”
silence.
“shinjiro, are you scared of centipedes?”
“…i’m not scared. i just would prefer to, um, not be around one. i guess.”
it’s hard to hold back a laugh. “that’s so cute! i never would’ve expected that from you!”
“just shut up and come over here!” he grunts, and you hear something clattering over. “it’s moving, holy shit, it’s moving-“
“okay, okay, i’ll be over in a second! i just have one condition; you have to give me a kiss.” it’s the least he could do for waking you up so early!
“fine, i’ll kiss you and whatever, just hurry up!”
you laugh, hanging up. not wanting to undermine his fears too much, you swiftly slip on some slippers and dash downstairs to his room, ignoring aigis in the lounge saying something about how according to her records, you are not usually in the hallway this early.
well, if you’re getting a kiss from shinjiro, who cares about the time?
twisting the handle, you swing open the door gently. shinjiro, still in his pajamas of a pair of boxers and a t-shirt, has his back is pressed against the wall opposite to the door, eyes wide and staring at the space to your right. his desk chair is knocked over on its side, likely the clattering sound you heard over the phone earlier. your eyes follow the target of his gaze, seeing the little creature with an uncomfortable amount of tiny legs right beside you.
“oh, it’s pretty small.” usually, you would opt for a cup and a piece of paper to trap the centipede and bring it outside to freedom, but with how dire the situation is, you have no choice but to abandon the pacifist route.
taking a slipper off, you utilize the footwear as a weapon to quickly smack the centipede. lifeless, it falls to the floor. picking it up with a tissue and discarding it in a nearby trash can, you hope that in the afterlife, it understands that this was a necessary action to get a kiss from your brooding boyfriend.
finally closing the door, you put your slipper back on as you glare at shinjiro, who visibly relaxes now that his opponent is dead.
“now where’s my kiss?” with a hand on your hip, you wait for your prize. you deserve it after all of that hard work, right?
he sighs, acting annoyed, but you both know he would never deny you. his eyebrows furrow as he walks over to you, muttering, “you’re such a moron.” to express his disdain, his hands naturally finds your waist as he presses his lips against your temple. “now we’re even.”
his eyes shift around a little. you look to see if there was possibly another centipede, but his reaction would be much more drastic if you did miss it. “shinjiro, what are you thinking about?”
“uh,” he hesitates, refusing to meet your eyes. “sorry for waking you up so early…i guess. and thanks.”
the corners of your mouth twitch, struggling to hide your amusement. “you know,” you lean against him, “i’m wayyy too tired to walk all the way back to my room. can i sleep with you for a little bit?”
he stiffens, then sighs reluctantly. “you’re such a pain in the ass.”
“oh? do you want me to leave then?”
swiftly, he swoops you off your feet, then gently sets you onto his bed. judging from the subtle raise of his eyebrows, he didn’t expect for that to be so smooth either. of course, you see right through him, laughing with your hands gripping his forearm.
“what’s so funny?” he quirks an eyebrow, slipping out of your grasp.
“you didn't even let me take my slippers off yet.” you kick them off your feet and begin to sit up to properly put them away, but he puts a hand on your chest to stop you. “lay down.”
who are you to deny his orders? like a gentleman, he lines them up properly at the door for you.
the bed dips as he situates himself beside you, making sure the blankets are covering you properly. like a magnet, you attach to his side, your arm wrapped around him and ear pressed against his chest. his heart beats rapidly in response. usually, you would pick on him, but he’s been through enough so early in the morning.
“you’re such a gentleman,” you tease, adjusting your body against him for maximum comfort.
“and you’re such a weirdo.” his heartbeat quickens again as his body vibrates beneath your ear with his gruff voice. “just hurry up and go to sleep.”
hopefully, the centipede’s spirit knows its sacrifice wasn’t in vain.
