Hello. Im Dike and I have been in the process of writing a book. Actually a lot of books. I am making this blog so that I can toss all my thoughts about my characters and plot and etc out into the void. If any of ye are curious and want more detail, dm me and I will not hesitate to dump upon ye any morsel of information ye could possibly ever want.

I really want to see more low/no empathy characters (NOT antagonists/villains) in books. Especially as protagonists, rather than side characters. I want to see characters who react with practicality after a tragedy. While everyone else is mourning, they're immediately thinking "how can we fix this / how can we make sure it doesn't happen again." Or alternatively characters who don't even react "reasonably". Who see tragedy and their first thought is "Well, at least we don't have to worry about X anymore." Or who sigh in relief that "at least it wasn't worse" while looking at the worst thing that's ever happened in their life.
I want to see characters who don't know how to react when their companions are experiencing strong emotions. Who try their best, but sometimes their best is a really awkward pat on the back or thumbs up. Or alternatively characters who avoid people who are experiencing strong emotion because the awkwardness and uselessness they experience is so uncomfortable for them.
I want to see characters who misread the room and crack a joke too soon, or try to offer a distraction when people don't want to be distracted. Characters who mean well, but act outside the "norm".
And I want to see characters who aren't villainized for it. I want to see characters whose friends say "It's okay, I know you're not good with this stuff." Or who make sure that their low-empathy friend has an important job to do to keep their mind busy, because just because they don't have empathy doesn't mean they can't be traumatized.
i love when characters are liars. i love when they're vain. i love when they don't know how to communicate, or simply refuse to. i love when they cause problems for themselves and also other people that could've easily been avoided. i love when they're too stubborn for their own good and end up making things worse. i love when they're consumed by guilt and grief. i love when they want to die
sometimes being moderately to severely disabled feels so damn lonely like I feel like I never see anyone whose life looks like mine in the fiction I read. Or if I do, they’re completely without agency or interiority. I read a lot of queer horror/new weird books and I just. Nobody uses a powerchair with a harness or chest belt. Nobody has to negotiate caregivers or worry about “hours.” Nobody ever mentions pressure or moisture injuries. Nobody is limited the way I am. And I guess it wouldn’t feel as bad if so much of what I’m reading involves shut ins and outcasts and like. A girl spending half the book in anguish in her bedroom and that’s the plot. I can’t be part of an adventuring party or anything like that but if your book is already about a guy trapped in a haunted house facing his mortality…
Hello! Its been anlong long while because i have been busy busy busy! I finished the big rock series, then finished another book called the Wanderment of Hitheryon, which follows this group of professional adventurers as they search for their missing team members.
I also finished another called Fate Within, a Che Kessler Mystery, which is the first in a detective series im starting. That once follows a DeafBlind skull-headed detective and their time travelling niece as they save the world with the help of an old woman who thinks she's dead.
And right now I'm working on Wicked Things the Rowboat Brings, a maritime horror set on board a tall ship. Blood, guts, and brigantines for your reading delight. In about halfway through, as i expect it to be a little shorter than the others
So that's the update! More to come once i get the chance.
your character doesn't need like an edgy backstory reason to be disabled btw they don't need to have injured themselves in The War they can just be like that for random normal reasons if you want

There is a great pressure inside my chest. Behind my ribs, i have no room for my lungs, no space for my heart. It is full of fog, thick, heavy fog that swirls and twists through my blood like milk poured into coffee. As though I am the maple, as well as the farmer who tends it, I need to bore a little hole between my ribs and put in a tap. Patience hurts, patience feels like steel wool on sunburnt skin, but I must patiently wait until everything that I was and everything I have inside me drip, drip, drips out into the bucket.
When it is all out I will breathe again, and the room will stop spinning around me. I wonder what bits and pieces of me would be caught up in the fog. I wonder if the distillation through my ribs would develop what I am into something worthwhile. Here, I made this. It's the essence of who I am. I had to tear it from my chest before it consumed me. Do you like it?

"if cozy fantasy doesn't do it for you try Gideon the ninth!" as much as I like irreverence I find this book TOO irreverent to the point of being annoying

Honestly these books have changed my life so fully and completely. Back when i started them, i was just writing on my phone, in the dark of night, waiting until my partner at the time was asleep so that i could write freely. I was terrified of showing amyone, because i wasnt confident with my own ability. I was so insecure. Over the course of writing these five books, I've gone way outside my comfort zone and gradually shown folk who are close to me, then grown in confidence to the point where now ill post snippets here on tumblr, hell, ive sat in the same room as somone who was reading my books and i didnt straight up combust! It got close though. That confidence was very much thanks to all my friends, who supported and encouraged me through the whole thing.
These books also helped me break up with my partner. For one, i realized that i would never ever be able to show them, because they would roast me to ashes over them. I couldn't bear the thought of them laughing at my writing, and i knew i couldn't eventually marry someone that i couldn't trust in that way..... the other thing was that i kept taking things they did as inspiration for Johnny's actions in the first book. When you find yourself modeling the v i l l a i n of your book after your partner, it's... it's a damn good sign to break up.
Plus this whole journey has taught me that i Can self motivate and i Can stick with things over long periods of time, im not helpless to adhd and the whims of hyperfixation. I can be dedicated and disciplined and get shit done. Look at me! Five books written in a year and a half! Im looking back at lil kid Dike who wanted to be an author, and at sullen teenage Dike who thought it would never be good enough for that. Follow your dreams, kids.
Look at that! It's my first test copy!! I can't wait to print more and get to properly publishing. This is my pride and joy and ive really never felt so proud of anything in my life.
Book five is done! This means the entire series is done! Hooray! Five was probably my favorite so far, and also the longest. The final battle was an absolute blast to write, and i loved the epilogue in which everything settled and i think i properly captured the feeling of bittersweet peace after a battle. I also had a lot of fun working with my various villians. I think their deaths/disappearances auited them. I also changed the evil wizard from Joshua to Matteo, and changed her gender. I didnt like that the end had Colleen and Thea(both women) fighting over a man, so i just made Matteo a girl too. Plus it was annoying me that Joshua and Johnny were practically the same name, and fates know i couldnt change johnny's. Anyways, the entire thing wrapped up beautifully in my not so humble opinion.
Ive also finished drawing the second book cover, so just three more to go, plus a lot of editing, and i can order a full set of proofs. Hell yes! Just y'all wait until i publish for real. I dont have the funds yet, but one of these days.

Ah so its been a bit but ive made a ton of progress. Books 1-4 are finished, had initial editing and formatting, i printed a test copy of book 1 which was immensely exciting, and now I've made all the format and minor edit adjustments, and all four are ready for a test run. Im about halfway through five, with each chapter running at about 12,000 words rn. Dan first, then Hephzibah, then Victoria, finally Talasi. The final chapter is going to be such a whirlwind of characters and alliances and battles and all kinds of stuff, I'm really excited to be tacklng it. I've also really enjoyed writing these first four chapters all together, they really interact with each other in such cool ways. Also I'm bringing back Sito, Zhao, and Kent, along with its partner Melly to help in the very end and its going to be delightful. I've been deciding also who to kill and who to spare lol, which has been a challenge. It's a big final battle! Lots of people die, that's how it goes. I'm doing a lot of fun death fake outs too. Anyways. Getting my little book printed feels like cocaine. It hasn't left my side and I've probably reread it twelve or thirteen times in the last two days. I read fast. I've been catching a lot of little errors that i missed onscreen too which has been very satisfying.
I think im finally fully and completely satisfied with book one, and two is getting damn close. Very excited to get them all properly finished, then write and edit five, then commission covers and get them all printed. Hell yeah.
