I hate the age of streaming. I hate that the success of a show depends on how well it trends on Twitter or how popular its music or sounds are on TikTok. I hate how fandoms have become commodities, narrative themes nothing more than pithy slogans you can slap on a hat, moral messages as empty and hollow as a coke commercial because the corporation behind them don't believe in anything but capital. I hate the algorithm that dominates our lives and interests, I hate the marketization of everything that could ever be loved. I hate how something as pure as wanting to see yourself in the stories you enjoy has become something so tainted and evil and reeking of pandering, or worse, of trying to stir controversy just for the clicks and the outrage. I hate how they use minority casting that way, it's evil and it's exploitative and it's completely performative, with no real interest in elevating marginalized voices.
I hate connected multiverses and big blockbuster franchises with 80 sequels and cameos and bringing back dead horses so you can beat them for all their worth. I'm tired of nostalgia and looking backwards, at something that never truly existed, because you can't stand to look at the world as it is now.
Most of all, though.
I hate the dilution of human storytelling.
I hate that it's all become "content." Just something you must pay for. Something you have to obsessively watch and binge because you have to get your money's worth. I hate that corporations fund these projects because it's something they can add to their catalogue, their bevy of "marketable content."
I hate that they can take any show off any time they want, and then it's just gone.
You can't watch it anymore, not legally anyway. I hate their callous disregard for the work of artists and animators and vfx artists.
I hate it all. I wish blockbuster could go back in time and strangle Netflix.
I wish I could do it myself.

how to write convincing dialogue
did you know that show, not tell applies to dialogue, too? while dialogue can be used to further your narrative, it can also be used to showcase your characters. here's how:
-what is your character hiding? most people don't say things at face value. they hide what they mean within their words and tone, but in writing, you can't verbally hear the character's tone. ways to convey non-verbal tone include: contradictions between words and actions, context behind the words (ie. the scenario, character's actions and feelings), syntax (ie. fragments, repetition, awkward phrasing). also consider who the character is hiding information from: is it the reader? the characters? both?
-favorite words or phrases. does your character use a certain phrase or word a lot? do they often put their prepositions at the beginning or the end of the sentence? these are questions to ask when you're arranging the syntax of the dialogue. everyone has a specific way of talking. make sure you give each character a distinguishable voice.
-personality. this is how you can create a distinguishable voice. is your character confident? are they shy or hesitant? do they repeat the phases of others because they have nothing to add to the conversation? are they confrontational or do they beat around the bush? ask questions like these. if your character is confident, they may make bold statements and appear sure of themselves unlike shy characters who use words such as "maybe" or "should" or "think." to boil it down, think active wordage versus passive.
-observe others. don't look solely at television or other books. sit at your local coffee shop and listen in on conversations, then try and break it down. are they hiding anything? do they frequently use any words or phrases? how would you describe their personality? the better you get at breaking down conversations, the better you can create convincing ones, whether shallow, deep, or as a narrative device, because even if you use your dialogue to move your narrative along, it should still be compulsively convincing.
one way to tell if you've ticked all these boxes is if you can tell who is speaking without any tags.

my library has a page where you can request titles to be added to the catalogue, and my requests have never, never been turned down
like, obscure book on irish mythology? added! cookbook written by a robot? hell yeah! just season 3 of a 1970s detective series, on DVD? sure, why not!
I don't know if it's that a librarian has decided to humor me, or if my library is particularly well-funded (I hope so; I love my library), but no matter what I request, they buy a copy and add it to the catalogue.
...so now, as I type in a suggestion for a queer romance with a pretty boy on the cover, I can only hope that luck is still with me
okay but genuinely, you should read this book
it's a slow-burn romance between a prince and his bodyguard, and it is so sweet! it's got all of the complicated feelings of fealty and duty, mixed in with shyness and worry and affection, and ugh it's just great
it's one of the best books I've read this year, and the second I finished it I wanted to pick it up and read it again. (but I can't because I have to return it to the library for the next person to enjoy it)
(I might just go buy the book. I'm very seriously considering buying the book right now. I want to read it again!)
it's just so soft! there are so many moments of tenderness, so many times you can see the love and connection, the mutual respect and loyalty that these beautiful men have for each other! the heartbreaking moments where they don't think they can have what they want! the yearning! my god, the yearning.
this is a comfort book for me. that's what this is.
there were times I laughed out loud, there were times I had to stop myself from skipping ahead because I wanted to know what happened, and also like...even though there's only one full sex scene in the book, a decent amount of the book is just. so hot. it's hard to explain, but the tension is just. wow.
and I hate playing diversity bingo with books (I dislike when book reviews are like "it has X representation therefore it is good!"), but I will say that the queer characters in this book (of which there are many) made me very, very happy.
also the worldbuilding! is just very cool! this is a world where some people have the ability to touch a piece of metal and know what it's made of! and since part of the plot is about a counterfeiting scheme, it's used in really interesting ways!
and the characters themselves are complex and feel very real. the prince has anxiety, and that's a thing he has to deal with, and it's very relatable. and throughout the story, other characters grow and change and you can see glimpses into their own complicated feelings as it goes on.
just! aah! go read the book! if you like slow-burn romance with beautiful descriptions and soft, intimate moments, you'll like this a lot!

in the song best song ever by 1D they’re not playing the song that is the best song ever, they’re just dancing all night to it. and in the monster mash, we know that the monster mash itself is the DANCE not the song they’re dancing to. and famously, in tenacious d’s song, tribute, they were not playing the greatest song ever, but rather just a tribute to it. so what I posit is this: all three of these songs are referencing the same song, the one all encompassing greatest song of all time that compels man and monster and demon alike to dance. but what song it is, we may never know…….

It’s a beautiful language, like Gaelic, Scottish and Irish. All languages are important for our history, it teaches us who we are, and who we were, it’s our true indigenous tongue.
Welsh was never a "dead language" because it was too strong for it's enemies to kill.

A form of genocide by trying to kill a language the English and American powers that be have been attempting on indigenous cultures for centuries. Protect, Welsh, Irish, Native American languages, Austrailian Aborigine, and all the many others not coming immediately to mind.
This is happening in France as well. French is the only official language in France and for many years, children weren’t allowed to speak other languages in school. This is why many of the French regional languages, such as Breton and Franco-Provençal, are endangered.
Most endangered languages aren't endangered because their speakers stopped caring, they're endangered because they were forcibly repressed
You know I never really thought about it but the fact that France has a whole council who are dedicated to protecting the purity/sanctity/whatever of French goes from something funny to chilling just by knowing there are other languages in France the government is trying to destroy.
