One of my pet headcanons is that Shane did one school play in middle school. He has a pretty good singing voice and the teachers were desperate for boys who could sing. He's also fairly good at public speaking, so the teachers were like 'well this seems perfect'.
Except that Shane hates every moment of it. He doesn't understand why there even has to be singing in the first place. Isn't this based on one of those old books they make you read in English class? Why is Oliver Twist dancing? He has one speaking line in the whole show and his director keeps trying to make him say it more excitedly. But he's not excited. And even after Yuna coaches him on it, the director is still like, "With more enthusiasm, Hollander!".
The only, ONLY, reason Shane doesn't quit is because it counts towards his English grade which means he gets more ice time.
And the only thing that makes it all worthwhile in the end is when Yuna digs out the old VHS of his performance and Shane, burning alive with embarrassment, turns to see Ilya with the biggest smile, fighting back tears.
"You were just so fucking cute, Shane. The cutest thing I have ever seen."
And god he still hates it, he has no fond memories, but whatever makes Ilya smile like that is always worth it.
