To he clear: the night had been bad. Consequently, he was short on patience and suprises.
Only two hours of sleep before, and tonight, so far, only one. Clone would live on less sleeps than nat-borns, but they too needed sleep. If only his (half) body knew and understood that instead of giving him aches, pains and nightmares that no amount of pills seemed to destroy all at the same time.
"What are you doing here?"
Omega raised her head, looking strikingly similar to someone having been found causing mischief. She gave him her sunny, summer smile, revealing her teeth. Most importantly, she looked at someone who should not have been here to begin with.
"Hunter hide chocolate, he wouldn't tell me where."
"Hunter's right. You," he pointed his scomp at her, "are supposed to be asleep at this hour."
Her smile vanished as quickly as he had emerged, and Echo felt no remorse to remind her that sleep was important, more than chocolate.
"Please, Echooo, tell me where it is. I know you know. You know everything."
He almost cracked a smile at that. He wished he knew everything: past, present and future alike. if he did, he would know where Jesse had been buried by Rex, and all his 501st brothers from that day, and he would cry and say the prayers to them. If he did know everything, he would have known for his recklessness at the Citadel, and he would have stayed at Fives' side; Sidious would be dead by now. Clones would be free.
If he knew everything, he would know how to convince Hunter to move from the shell of self-righteousness he had draped upon himself ever since Omega had arrived, and tell him to get Crosshair back. If he knew everything, he would have saved them all and found Kix and a hundred more things more important that finding a surprise at past hour right now, requesting chocolate.
"No, what? You don't know everything, or you won't tell where Hunter's hidden the chocolate."
"You can pick one, if you want. But both will be equally true."
She rolled her eyes, not unlike the way he did when annoyed with one of their brothers.
"Back to bed, young lady. Now."
"Think doesn't go so well with Phee, so I advise you to rethink your words, cadet. Bed. Now."
Omega rolled her eyes a second time. At least she moved from the kitchen to her room, climbing the stairs, sighing, expressing her discontent in every way that would have made Hunter's felt bad, made Wrecker hand her the chocolate, and had made Tech enumerate every logical reason as to why sleeping was predominant to chocolate at this hour of the night.
He was none of them. Silence had been the way of Rex and Cody to make them, he and Fives, understood what had been done wrongly, before the words came back. Silence preceded noises.
"You should be asleep too," Omega added, pulling the Wreker's precious doll against her chest.
"You were. You should be. Hunter says you have nightmares. I hear you, you know. And-"
He stayed quiet, crossing his arms, wondering where she was going with her reasoning.
"I can't have chocolate you said," she went on, "and I have to sleep. You," she wrung her finger, pointing at him, "are supposed to be asleep and won't. So let's make a deal. Sleep with me, and tomorrow you tell me where the chocolate is, and I won't tell Hunter you told me."
He scoffed. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he had known brothers who were as good at negotiating, better than her. But she had youth. One day, Echo believed, she would be hard to make a deal with.
"Echoooo," she went on, making her puppy eyes that had an absolute effect on Wrecker and Hunter.
"I'll stay with you, trooper. And you get one Easter chocolate. Not everything, or you're going to be sick."
He chuckled, happy to give her this small surprise, as he climbed and went onto her couch. Omega immediately settled on his side, bright and cheerful, pulling herself against him, and he laid his good arm around her, Lula against her chest.
"Good night," she told him, already closing her eyes.
The night hadn't gone like he expected, and it took him another good hour before daring to close his eyes and go back to the dream kingdom, but he did it anyway.
When he dreamed, he was back playing cards with his brothers.
