Parallels (IMDb / wikipedia) is a “movie” on Netflix. Those quote marks are because Netflix has given us a pilot for a TV show that hasn’t been made, and they’ve called it a movie. This means that it will be made entirely of loose ends right now, just to warn you. I cannot find any information about whether this TV show will be picked up, but it aired on 1st March 2015 as far as I can tell.
I should probably also mention that you will mainly be watching this for the excellence that is Constance Wu (who plays Polly).
It passes the Bechdel Test based on the closing scene, which is very spoilery so I won’t tell you what happens. I’ve submitted that to BechdelTest.com but the post isn’t up yet; I’ll edit in a URL when it is.
It reminds me a lot of The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. It’s like if Sliders and Fringe got it on and had a low-budget, gritty, well-characterised sci-fi baby.
Ronan (right) is an underground MMA fighter (superpower: knocking people out) and brother of Beatrix (left), a student at Princeton (superpower: looking at people endearingly). Harry (middle) is a public defender with a crush on Beatrix (superpower: sticking to his morals like whoa), who is pretty much along for the ride to escape his terrifying-even-at-a-distance mother.
Ronan and Beatrix get a call from their father, who then turns out to be missing. They head to the address their father gave them, which turns out to be…
The Building (~ominous music~). It’s the same on every Earth.
Inside it’s scrawled with graffiti about the various Earths left by world-hoppers to help other travellers. "Avoid Earth 33 - the contagion has spread." "Found an Earth where all babies are born as twins."
Oh and, there’s the mysterious Device. All sci-fi stuff needs one.
Watch it on Netflix if you’re into gritty sci-fi. It’s on the UK and the US Netflixeseses, and many more according to moreflicks.com.
And then leave a review on Netflix, and give it plenty stars.
Also, if you have links to articles that contain any confirmed info about whether it’s going to get made or not, throw them at me?
Edit: Spotted on the trailer’s YouTube comments:
Fox Digital Studio are the ones that made the pilot and it looks like it’s been well-received, which bodes well.
