People who live in other countries are surprised when I tell them Canada still has a king. Well, not Australians, who are never surprised by anything. Having royalty running the show, even as figureheads, is such an ancient concept that it's practically nostalgic.

Thing is, it's my theory that people need someone to tell them what to do. Call it authoritarianism if you must, but remember that authors write books. You ain't never read a book written by a whole bunch of people before, unless you're counting a poetry anthology, and in which case I think you're in the wrong lecture.

When I was still a functionary tending to the bellows of the great industrial machine, making that machine callously crush the life out of all existence was not a democracy. Yes, it needed a team, but someone had to decide what specific atrocity they were all trying to accomplish, and make concrete steps towards it. Also, someone needed to make a decision about what colour to make the Excel columns.

Our king (formerly a queen, but don't get excited, she died and this is her weird fuck-up son) is presumably the guy who is deciding what colour to make the Excel columns for our nation. Sure, we don't actually listen to him, but let's be honest: when was the last time you followed your boss' instructions to the letter? You're probably reading this shit at work.

Lots of folks want to get rid of the king, and enjoy a pure democracy instead with no threat that some unaccountable ruler will throw them into the Tower of London for making fun of his crown. Personally, I don't think we should get rid of that. After all, there's a slim chance that I'll become the king, and then things will really change around here.
