DR Shipwars (Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the salt)
So there has been something somewhat big going on in the Danganronpa community involving shipping, LGBT and Identity politics, it’s going to be a long one so rev up those fryers.
The center of the drama comes from two places, the Twitter page known as @drawards and semi-popular YouTuber OmegaValwin. This started when drawards decided to open nominations up so people can nominate themselves for stuff like “#1 Character fan” or “#1 ship fan,” however they made one rule stating that anyone who shipped a “canon” gay character in a heterosexual relationship cannot nominate themselves for said ship.
This did raise attention and soon OmegaValwin entered the stage and did his typical jabbing at the rather silly rule. This lead to things like the twitter page opening a few polls asking if characters like Nagito, Tenko and Omau were gay only to then privatize the page so only the followers can vote, so people who most likely believed the same views.
This also lead to Valwin examining the Danganronpa Wiki page and pointing out some of the bias admins have on the website.
And that’s just scratching the surface of what’s going on. Now if you like Valwin or not really isn’t the point here, the issue is how the DR fandom for a while really focused on character’s identity. This has been going on as far back as the first game the now meme worthy “Chihiro is Trans.”
One argument that kept popping up was how shipping a gay character in a hetro relationship erases said character’s identity. To that I argue that one ship isn’t as or more important as canon details, if someone ships said character in a relationship that may go against it’s canon sexuality, that doesn’t mean it’s erasing the canon, it’s just a ship.
Thing is when I question if the same applied to Straight character’s in Gay relationships, one argument I received was how despite a character showing attraction only towards the opposite gender doesn’t actually mean they’re straight, yet if it’s towards the same gender then it means they’re gay. So practically different rules for extremely similar scenarios.
Many people want LGBT representation in the media and whist I agree that there isn’t that much in main stream media, I feel the reason is LGBT doesn’t actually make up that much of the population. In the UK it’s considered only 6% of the population could be Gay and in a survey in 2012, over 90% of those who took part identified as Heterosexual. But when I brought this up I was just hold it was “the hetronomativity coming out,” even if it’s true the facts still seem to show there’s loads more Straight people so of course most of the mainstream media would have those characters, especially in countries like Japan where LGBT is still considered a complicated issue.
And another argument they bring is how those who may ship Gay characters in Straight relationships are homophobes, that itself is a big accusation to make over a ship, shipping don’t usually focus on sexuality, they focus more on possible connections (or in a lot of cases the two being rivals who secretly love each other for some reason) it’s why Yaoi/Yuri ships tend to ignore details like the character showing affection to only the opposite gender.
Could the people who do these types of ships be homophobes? There’s a possibility, but that’s too much of a claim over what essentially is a pointless ship.
And that’s one of the major things that I find to be embarrassing in the community, all this fuss, all this dictating who to ship and who’s canon this and that is all over something that’s no more then pointless fun. And the whole argument about which characters in DR are gay especially in V3 is rather complicated (Considering there’s still a debate on it the Love Hotel sequences are canon), Danganronpa is a rather diverse franchise with a lot of different characters with different backgrounds and so on, they actually have a Gay character with Juzo for one thing.
But to dictate people because of a ship, to call them homophobic or that they’re wrong over something pointless is as said before embarrassing, and it really doesn’t help the LGBT Community.

Ehh there’s really nothing special to this monster, I have no idea about Yu-Gi-Oh (it was only something I occasionally brushed over when it came to what I assumed was the first series) but I’m guessing this is one of the characters maybe the protagonist in a demon form.
I Mean it looks like a demon but that’s about it, there’s really nothing special going on for me, it’s not bad but I wouldn’t say it’s spectacular.

So in conclusion, you fundamentally failed to understand Atlus’s critique at sexism in Japan’s male-dominated police force and commentary about gender roles to push a fetishizing narrative that has no relation to the fact of the matter. You then call Atlus cowards for not doing what you want. The fact of the matter is Naoto found the sexism in the police force unbearable and believed, falsely, that she had to be a man to be taken seriously. Not that she disliked her body or experienced any kind of dysphoria - you know, the thing required to be trans - just… she wanted to be a detective. In any case, you deliberately ignored that Kanji isn’t gay, people just think he is because he has perceived-as-feminine interests like knitting and sewing. He then overcompensates with machismo and delinquency to ensure people are too scared to call him gay because he is afraid of how people see him. That is literally his entire fucking character arc, that he pretends not to give a shit and let people judge him then acts out when they do.

There is nothing wrong with my sense of sexual aesthetic and you deliberately brought it up with intent to shame me and assassinate my character. The reason I started this blog was because I wanted to parody all those “<BLANK>characteroftheday” blogs, though these days those types of blogs seem to be dying down as I stated.
But I’ll admit when some BS relating to headcanons/shipping/whatever comes up I’m head over heels for that shit. So I’m going to try to return to posting stuff like that.
However, I’m not in every fandom and I don’t wanna spend all day looking for that sweet fandom drama to poke and laugh at, so that’s why I’m asking you, the people who have just joined or stood around because you forgot I excited.
