Although the Solstice party was loud and disruptive, Maeve had found herself a nice spot in the sand and popped in her earphones, letting X Ambassadors drown out the noise. With the sun on her and the music playing, she easily drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
Of course, all Maeve had been able to think about all day had been the fight she had booked for tomorrow night, so that is where her mind went the moment she was asleep. Even though she knew the fight was in Chicago, her past came back knocking in the form of the first gym she went to when she first starting learning self defense. The music followed her into her dream, muffling what would have been the fightâs announcement and the crowd full of familiar faces.Â
The person across the ring from her had half the features of the person she knew she was preparing to fight and half of her own, which gave her an unsettling feeling in her stomach as she waited for it all to start. And yet it never did. Maeve tried to move her feet and her body stayed completely still, frozen in anticipation.Â
âThe devil you know, the devil you know, the devil you donât
Cause better to know the devil you know, the devil you donât,
Cause wherever you go, wherever you go,
With the devil you know you never aloneâŠâ
âA little too appropriate, donât you think,â her dream self said aloud, as there was nothing else she seemed able to do but mock her own choice of soundtrack.
It had taken some effort and mental preparation but Genevievehad finally managed to gain entry to the Solstice party. In stealthy fashion,of course. Being young had its perks but still attending the academy left a lotof walls to be scaled. Naturally the first place she sought out was the sand. The warm particles beneath her finger tips and the sound of the water ahead; itwas the perfect depiction of peace. How long had she been in the same spot? Enjoying the soundsof the water and idle chatter of students further off in the distance. As thesun fell lower everyone had started to close in on the water, though mostchoose a place further up with some remaining shade. Which was all fine by hereshe didnât mind having some time to herself.
Genevieve hadnât realized she had been slipping off into aheat induced slumber until a nearby sound woke her. Tilting her head, a bit andadjusting herself more so onto her back she listened. She could hear them thesoft yet well-defined grumbles that formed the sheet music for troublesomeslumber. Generally, she wasnât one to pry. But as minutes passed with the othershowing no real signs of coming to; she thought perhaps she should try to lendsome assistance. Closing her eyes her breathing slowed down meeting an even rhythm.
âHello?â She posed the questionto anyone in the dream world; which was always a gamble. One never knew if thedreamer or random character would respond, if any at all. More often than notthey didnât even realize they were being spoken to and their dreams carried onlike a train on a track. Like a melted painting finding itâs solidity whatseemed to be a gym came into view the echo of her footsteps growing softer.
Gene moved slowly taking in all of the surroundings as she came acrossthem. Taking some time to smell the roses if you will. Pausing for a momentbefore quickly getting her mind back on track. âHel. . .â She beganagain before her eyes landed on a pair of woman centered in a nearby ring. âTwoof the same person?â . . . She actually felt a little rude for listening in.But  how can one help if they donât firstobserve. âSubconscious?â Gene mumbled aloud as she realized who thewoman was sheâd never had a face to go with the voice and name. âYouâreMaeve. . .Right?â
