Katniss's Narration vs Haymitch's Narration
tbh a lot of my advice boils down to “hey you know that terrible horrible looming thing you’re doing your best to avoid and distract and escape as much as possible but no matter what you do it just keeps looming and looming and ruining your life”
“just, fuckign, run straight at it screaming.”
i needed this as a background
*Before the Third Quarter Quell, during the first co-conspirators Victors meeting*
Johanna: fine we'll keep the girl alive how hard can it be
Haymitch: oh honey you think I drink for fun?
Finnick: listen it's just one tribute and half of us are in on it we can do it
Haymitch: uh no actually you need to keep both my tributes alive
Chaff: Haymitch I get you want to protect the boy but this is about something bigger we need to focus on the Mockingjay
Haymitch: oh no you're not getting it. If Peeta dies Katniss will kill everyone in that Arena and then herself
Finnick: come on Haymitch we know the whole romance thing is just an act
Haymitch:
Haymitch: you know what I'mma just let you guys figure out this one
*Later, five minutes into the Games, the second Finnick resuscitates Peeta while Katniss loses her marbles*
Finnick, softly but with feeling: fuck
Happy birthday Haymitch Abernathy
— peeta mellark, age 7, probably
katniss in her narration: haymitch hates peeta and i. the only reason he keeps us around at all is out of some sick sense of obligation and pity. i wish he would just drop the act
haymitch in his narration: katniss and peeta are the only reasons i haven’t killed myself yet <3
Sometimes I open this app to see people saying that Effie going to twelve after the war is incredibly uncharacteristic for her, because she would never settle down for a place so out of her comfort, after being a shallow, materialistic, wealthy woman for so long, and it really struck me how the fact that she was a torture survivor is conveniently kept out of this conversation every.single.damn.time
Yes, Effie wouldn’t settle down for a place so far from her Capitol comfort in any normal conditions. She was a force of the wind driven by the hustle of the city life, and the monotony of living in a country house, after so many tempestuous years being delighted by the chaos of her routine in the city, would eventually become unbearably boring to her if she had not been perpetually traumatized by the exact same hectic city that had once thrilled her.
The Capitol stopped being a safe space for her the moment Snow locked her underground. The comfort, the clothes, the familiarity…these were all gone when her sense of security was weaponized against her. Her identify was used to determine her punishment— she wasn’t ever going to look back at the things that once represented her, with anything but terror. Therefore, I believe it’s safe to assume that, once she was properly recovered physically, emotionally and, more importantly, financially, and could finally make her own decisions, she would want to stay as far from anything that may trigger her memories as possible. A place where she wouldn’t remember the Capitol so vividly; a place where the citizens of her torment wouldn’t be seen, a quiet place where she could forget, or at least try to survive, the aftermath of the emotional turmoil and grief she was forced to endure during the war.
District One was too close to the Capitol, the architecture, the people, the expansion building that would happen once the gates were open— it would resemble too much. District two were full of the peacekeepers that tortured her. District Three, Five, Six, Seven etc had nothing to offer her. Twelve was not only perfectly fit for her to disassociate from her trauma, but also the only place on earth that still held people she cared about, so why not?
happy pride! remember that being a transgender is everything but fiction. there are so many real historical figures from every century about whose transgender identities we aren't even aware of
i got that dog in me but it's poorly socialized and i don't take it on as many walks as i should
this is how new yorkers @ mamdani
is anyone else annoyed that "ai" encompasses both chatgpt and tools we train to do repetitive tedious work for us. and by the ripple effect of articles like "scientists develop ai to detect cancer early" that make people argue for the merit of chatgpt or become anti-medicine. and by the general state of the world and society
the difference between Haymitch and Katniss's narration is so funny. Haymitch would give us everyone's social security number if he knew them, while Katniss wouldn't even tell us her mom's name.
the way haymitch must have seen it as all his ghosts coming back to haunt him at once when katniss walked onto the train with the face of burdock and asterid, the pin of maysilee, the voice of lenore dove, and a background so devastatingly similar to his own. of course sweetheart slipped out. and of course he did everything he could to keep her alive
Honestly obsessed with the fact that Haymitch Abernathy did one (1) nice thing for Effie Trinket (helping pick up her makeup box) and Effie decided then and there that was Her Man™ and proceeded to stand by him for the next quarter of a century.
We love a low standards queen.
the difference in hunger games narrators is so funny to me like this is our starting lineup
katniss: i go to a place and do a thing using a skill. also everyone hates me. oh you want to know more about myself? here are four straight paragraphs just describing food instead.
haymitch: so the baker’s in love with my best friends girl and my girlfriend’s uncle is gay and secretly dating the town window-fixer and she’s actually related to lucy gray and has beef with the mayors daughter who bullied me and her social security number is—
snow: everyone here is UGLY and OBNOXIOUS and TACKY and I Am God.
guards! read me my bedtime yaoi
my liege if you keep having all of the guards come to your bedroom to read you bedtime stories, there will be no one to actually guard the castle during that time!
any intruders are welcome to join us for story time
my liege the enemies to lovers yaoi is affecting your perception of the danger of real enemies.
when will it be my turn.
holy fuck
happy one year to bedtime yaoi
random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.
also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo
also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)
Keeping a list of Google alternatives just in case…
i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:
Search Engines
Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.
Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.
Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.
Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.
Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy.
Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.
Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden.
MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.
Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching.
Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.
https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.
https://www.mojeek.com/
https://wiby.me/ - It’s goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.
https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
