The annual Perseid meteor shower is my favourite and the most famous stargazing event during the summer. It puts on a great show this week as you can see 60 or more “shooting stars” per hour! The meteor shower lasts until late August but as Phil Plait said the best time to watch is Wednesday night after local midnight - that’s when your part of the Earth is facing into the oncoming meteoroids and you see more.
Here are some general tips which make stargazing better:
Give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust to the dark. Any exposure to bright lights will instantly ruin your eye’s acclimatization to the dark.
If possible go outside the city, or search for good local stargazing places
For the best chances of spotting a shooting star, scan the whole sky repeatedly
Be prepared to spend a few hours sitting outside. Meteor showers can be seen as soon as it gets dark, but better viewing begins about 11 pm
Here’s NASA’s visibility map from last year:
The meteors are bits of rocky debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle as it orbits the Sun. When Earth goes through the comet’s path, some of the bits of comet dust slam into the atmosphere. Have further questions? You’ll probably get an answer here.
Dozens of brave Ugandans gathered this weekend to celebrate Pride, even in the face of rampant homophobia and the risk of violence from the community or even the government.
At a secluded beach in Entebbe, on Lake Victoria just outside the capital Kampala, a group of about 70 people holding banners including “I have a relationship with Jesus and I’m gay”, marched a short distance as music blared out. […]
“We are here to send a message to the wider population that we do exist and we want rights like any other Ugandan,” said Moses Kimbugwe, one of the marchers. “We think this is a step moving forward.”
Every time someone in Uganda celebrates their LGBT identity in public, it’s an act of resilience, of defiance, of revolution. I am forever impressed and humbled by these individuals. (via the Huffington Post)
AS ONE DOES.
GAY AND PROUD!
i’m still weirded out how much of a collective experience this was???
daily reminder to use your muscles right
Simple yet effective. More art from this guy here :).
there’s a lot going on here
This is for all the allies out there, thank you for your support! :)
This is my favorite photo. This photo is of my boyfriend and I kissing before my graduation. I received my associate’s of arts with all three types of honors. I also graduated top of my department. I did all of this at the age of 18. People say that gays are an abomination, but some of us are going to change the world.
remember when mario galaxy first came out and people realized that the letters in the logo that had sparkles on them spelled out “U R MR GAY” and everyone thought it was an intentional subliminal message
News: 16-year-old Shira Banki was critically wounded after being stabbed by Yishai Shlissel three days ago; family says will donate Shira's organs.
Shira Banki, age 16, has died after being stabbed by Yishai Shlissel at Jerusalem’s Pride parade a few days ago.
Shlissel stabbed six people at the parade, just after finishing a ten-year jail sentence for committing a similar act of terrorism at another Jerusalem LGBT event ten years ago.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his condolences to Shira Banki’s family, after she succumbed to her wounds as a result of Thursday’s pride parade stabbing attack.
Netanyahu said: “Shira was killed because she bravely supported the ideal that any and everyone should be free to live their lives safely and with dignity. We will not allow the despicable murderer to shake our core values, on which Israeli society depends. We must expel any attempt to incite hatred and violence within our society, and we will act in order to find justice with the murder.”
Devastated. There are no words for the grief we’re feeling right now. We need time to mourn, and then we need strength to fight. We cannot let this happen ever again, anywhere in the world.
Please take care of one another. Rest peacefully, Shira.
Terribly sad news, Rest in Peace Shira. The fight for love and acceptance is definitely not over.
Terminated
Happy International Women’s Day!
Haven't posted on here for a while....college taking its toll!! :P Anyway, spread this around! I think this is so important for people to be proud of who they are! I will be proudly drawing an orange (my favourite colour! ;P) heart on my wrist, as I am definitely proud of who I am, as should everyone because everyone is special and all love is special in any way, and of course we must not forget the people that have fought for equality and the people continuing the fight today! :) <3
Couldn't be more true :)
