yeah they drop them in like a real fall into a pool its an infant self rescue course its scary as hell to watch but it teaches your baby not to drown
No seriously it really is amazing. It’s called ISR Self Rescue. I’ve seen multiple parents on social media decide to do this with their babies as young as 6 months (they gradually get up to the “throwing” into the pool) and it’s so awesome watching it.
It literally could be a lifesaver some day. One time I watched a security camera video of a dad playing in a pool with his kids and his toddler, who had been sitting on the slide, fell in and the dad didn’t notice for at least 30 seconds… But this little toddler automatically knew what to do and started floating on his back. When the dad noticed, he immediately grabbed him, but the reason this toddler didn’t sink or drown was because of the infant swim lessons his parents had presumably put him in.
Obviously floaties and parental supervision would still help, but you can’t rely on those 100% of the time.

Crazy factoid: Babies are actually born knowing how to hold their breath and use swim-like movements when submerged. Yeah. It’s a primitive reflex that they lose (if not enforced) at ~6 months.
Obviously, do not submerge your infant in water without an expert, but what these lessons are doing is encouraging and honing natural reflexes. These babies are perfectly safe, and I honestly think this is a really responsible parenting move. Accidents happen. Floaties don’t know which side is up. Parents are humans, not robots, and especially with more than one kid, sometimes you look away for a minute. It happens. But lessons like these minimize the risk involved.
Also, as with so many things with infants and small children, mood is such a big deal. Letting your baby fall into the pool and not freaking out means your kid will probably be calm as they learn to maneuver in the water. If you panic, they’ll panic, cuz babies are very dependent on adults for emotional cues. So it’s also about helping parents maintain their calm in handling children swimming.
Fun fact: My folks did this! I could swim before I could walk. Also according to my mother, I was the demonstration child - the one the instructors used to demonstrate new moves at baby swim classes - because I am basically some kind of aquatic human subspecies.
Moose being so dangerous doesn’t change the fact that they’re fundamentally ridiculous looking creatures. It’s like somebody put a rhinoceros on stilts. A creature that looks that silly should not be able to kill you so easily.

An Argument In Favor of Video Games From a Quarantined Mother #Quaranteens #WTFparenting My 15 yo son has spent every second of his free time during this pandemic hanging out online, playing video games with his friends. He started by ranking up to the elite tiers of Apex Legends. I am told this is quite a feat. Honestly, I believe it because it took him and his friend 6 hours a day for a week to rank that high. After that came Sea of Thieves. He joined up with more friends and sailed the digital oceans until piracy lost it’s shine. Also, when two friends started arguing in game. 2 nights ago they made a plan to meet up as a big group on Fortnight. None of them really play Fortnight much anymore because the crowd is a little younger. But they didn’t want to work too hard at playing, they just wanted to hang out. Last night, six of them met up again on Fortnight to hang out and play. They were goofing off, doing stupid teenager stuff, when they met a solo player named JamMaster. Sometimes if they meet solo players that are pretty chill, they’ll join forces. JamMaster seemed pretty young but he was by himself and they were having fun showing him what they knew about the game. They invited him to join their crew. Pretty soon they discovered that their first impressions were correct. JamMaster WAS much younger than they were - only 10 years old. They also discovered that it was his birthday in the morning. The boys realized that JamMaster had been hanging out by himself all night, on the eve of his 1 Ith birthday- which he would be spending by himself in quarantine. CLEARLY SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE. Y'ALL, THEY THREW HIM AN 11TH BIRTHDAY PARTY They took him on a bunch of adventures, gave him all the loot they could, helped him win a few battles, and made his stay up until midnight so they could all sing happy birthday to him. This morning, as my son told me about their adventures and all the fun they had, I started to cry. I was trying to say something like “Oh that’s so nice” but tears just started spilling down my cheeks. He could not understand why. But…but… CAN YOU IMAGINE? The disappointment of being quarantined for your 1 Ith birthday only to be met by a random six-pack of teenage gamers who decide you’re awesome and want to throw you a birthday party? What a roller coaster. What an experience. What an incredible thing to do for a young gamer. In conclusion: video games, hell yeah.

I think this woman is also a quality mom, because how many moms listen enough to what their kid is interested in to know what game they’re playing and how much time they’ve invested, and to listen to them talk about their game enough to hear a story like this? maybe it’s more common than i expect but this is the kind of engagement with my interests i craved as a kid
I lost my Marlee and I'm not handling it well. I loved her so much and I thought she just had a UTI and instead I held her head as she died. I'm not strong enough for this.

What does this even mean
The emotional experience that people are looking to get out of their media doesn’t have to be a happy or positive one. Some folks watch thrillers that make them anxious, or tragedies that make them sad.
For me, sometimes the emotional experience I want to get out of a piece of media is confused dismay.

normalize not celebrating xmas. like every single piece of media involving xmas in any way shape or form has everyone celebrating it like no matter their religion they just like do it for the spirit or the holiday or whatever and if they originally don't it ends w them giving in out of consideration and being guilted. like if you love xmas, that's great. i love bubble tea and i love rosh hashanah, but i don't expect everyone to love them or even experience them. it's not sad for me if someone doesn't enjoy them bc i'm not a self obsessed prick who assumes everyone else enjoys and celebrates the same things i do. pls be respectful this year, pls acknowledge xmas IS NOT a secular holiday, please do not other and exclude those who do not celebrate it. and btw this goes beyond inclusive language.

Yup. And what’s even more insidious is that mysterious symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, upset stomach, things like that - ALWAYS get explained away as “it’s because you’re fat.” Whereas if a thin person goes in and says that, they’re more likely to be taken seriously. Fat people literally can’t get a diagnosis without joining weight watchers first to “prove” it’s not just because we’re fat. So if two women have cancer, and feel fatigued, and one of them is thin and the other is fat…one gets pointed to a diagnosis faster, while the other one gets told to go on a diet. The delay of a few months, hell, a few weeks, can be all the difference. And fat people have their symptoms ignored for yeeeeeaaars. Fatphobia and bias in the medical community claims lives.
As someone who is fat and who also works in the medical field, here is my recommendation:
Tell the doctor you still want to follow up with further diagnostics. If/when the doctor denies these diagnostics and tests, tell them you want it noted in your chart that they denied the patient’s request for further testing.
That will usually get further medical tests and treatments.
