Alabama Clemson IV - Who you got?
USC and Stanford.
We made it! The world’s longest offseason is finally over and I can’t be more relieved. And to highlight the weekend, Washington and Auburn will meet in Atlanta!!
The game isn’t your normal big matchup. Both teams find themselves slightly behind the 8-ball: Auburn behind the likes of Alabama and Georgia, Washington behind the diminished perception of the Pac 12 conference. This one loss has a high cost.
But the weekend is also loaded with other great matchups. Michigan-Notre Dame! Alabama-Louisville! Miami-LSU! Virginia Tech-FSU!! And so many more that will bring back that wacky, unpredictable excitement called college football. Welcome back, everyone!!
P.S. - I wanted to write this whole thing in CAPS because I’M THAT EXCITED. But I decided against it.
The Race Begins!!
Another college football season is about to begin and, as always, it’ll be filled with all sorts of racing metaphors. Twists and turns, close calls, wrecks and more. Can’t wait to get started!
The Fight for the ACC.
With the inclusion of Wake Forest, Boston College, NC State, and Georgia Tech, ever Power 5 mascot has been brought into the YALL lore. Sorry it took so long to get to you guys.
A quick Baylor Bear sketch. Could have been faster had I not started drawing on the wrong layer. 😒 Why'd I draw Baylor? It was elected by my Patreon backers. If you'd like to vote for what I draw and help support my work, please consider checking out my Patreon page via the link in the header above.
The new Big XII season is going to be a fight.
Also announcing my new Patreon page (http://patreon.com/YouAreLookingLive). If you would like to support my art, please check it out. By doing so, you’ll get access to behind-the-scenes sketches, process videos, and even a vote each week to decide which matchups gets illustrated.
Year One!! The college sports art blog/comic/showcase has made it one whole year! To commemorate, I thought it would be best to take a look back at the year in college sports. This illustration is just a few of the many, many, many great moments, players and teams that made my first year of illustration so colorful.
YALL has grown more than I ever expected it would. I was able to produce 34 illustrations here on tumblr, with a few more spread out on Instagram and Twitter. But more importantly, I’ve made new connections, had some interesting conversations, and (I think) improved on my art skills.
Now, if you’ll allow me some navel-gazing, here are a few highlights:
The Very First -- The original post on June 21, 2017. It’s not my favorite but I feel like I have to include it here. You’ll notice it’s more of a webcomic than most of the others; this was kinda my intention when I started it but the bigger illustration pieces won out in the end.
The Conference Previews -- I had one for the SEC, the B1G, and the Pac 12, my favorite probably being the SEC piece -- I really liked how most of the SEC West and Arkansas came out. I ran out of time last year to get to either the ACC or Big XII but it is on my list of things to do before the season.
Maybe My Personal Favorite -- The Alabama/FSU opener didn’t quite live up to the hype, but I did get this illustration out. The Crimson Tide as a red tidal wave with a giant evil elephant inside is easily my favorite idea I had all season. I want to use it every time I draw the Tide but it doesn’t always make sense. This illustration came out a little dark, so there have been a few times where I’ve shown it to a few people and they totally missed the “hidden” elephant.
Best Story in One Illustration -- Ohio State and Penn State lost on the road and the following week had top-ranked Georgia and Alabama in a similar situation. Only Georgia didn’t make it (secret art sketch right here). As I planned that week out, I couldn’t believe how easy the story was to translate into an illustration.
The Big One -- To this day, I still have no idea what made me think doing 68 teams in a week and a half was a good idea, let alone achievable. This is, without a doubt, the hardest and most time-consuming thing I committed to all year, both inside and outside of work.* But I was incredibly relieved once I was done. And proud. I was able to also do a short webcomic after the first weekend (another of my favorites) and one showing how it looked right before the Sweet Sixteen.
There’s so much more that I still want to do with it. It would be amazing if I could get myself to start pushing the boundaries of the character design. Too many times I default to the actual mascot design. Hopefully, this coming year, I can find new, better ways to look at these mascots. I also want to draw more people, like the coaches and the players. One idea I had is to make a small comic page for each week, giving a heads-up of what’s to come in a more story-driven art form. Also, I want to try new art styles. Hopefully, you’ll see some before the season begins.
And finally, I want to say thank you to anyone that has liked, followed, retweeted, messaged, encouraged, helped, or supported me. You’ve all been awesome and receptive to me filling the section of the Venn diagram where college sports and art meet. Thank you. Let’s keep this going.
* - I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this here, but I don’t do these or any artwork as part of my day job. Completely on the side stuff. The reason is that I do want art to someday be my day job. Small steps for now but I’m not giving up.
Albert the Gator. Started out as a simple post-it note sketch and got transformed into this via today's technological magic. I'm starting to get antsy about football even though we're still two plus months away.
In August, just before the football season begins, there’s going to be a big event you won’t want to miss in Kansas City. It’s a an SEC Block Party. Food, drinks, football, rivals, friends. It’s all there. This illustration is going to be used as advertisement all summer. I’m also planning on being at the event so if your near Kansas City at the time, come on over.
The Sweet Sixteen is starting right now!!
What a crazy weekend. We never seem to expect the top seeds to fall. But they always do. Although, watching a 1-seed crumble is something truly special. I’ve heard some say that it is the biggest upset in sports history.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep continuing this story and by the end, we’ll have a nice comic book-like story for the champions.
This is it. The NCAA Basketball Tournament. This weekend is one of the best weekends in the sports calendar year. And this illustration — this monster — is just insanity. Not only in what is going on in this picture but in the fact that I even attempted it. I drew 68 individual, unique mascots in less than a week. About two nights into it, I had a very intense realization that I already to at a point of no return, but I also knew that there was a mountain ahead to climb. (Ha, puns.) And yet, I didn’t hate the process. This was every last ounce of my effort to get this done before the games start on Thursday. I made time, I lost sleep, I secluded myself away over an entire weekend. I even drew while I sat at a stoplight because I knew I was behind. But why did I do it? Because I know that I want to be doing art as a career, someday. This piece showed me what I’m capable of, and I hope it shows you too. Happy Tournament everyone! I hope you enjoy this illustration as much as I did. And if you would like to purchase a print, please contact me through Instagram, Twitter, or here on tumblr.
Despite the fact that the B1G tournament is in full swing, I decided to draw the UNC/Duke matchup. I don't think there's a bigger, more important rivalry in all of college basketball.
The big game this weekend is the Kansas Jayhawks traveling to the Texas Tech Red Raiders who are undefeated at home this year. Kansas has a won or shared the Big XII conference title for each of the last 13 years. If Tech can beat the Jayhawks, win the remaining two games, and get lucky enough that Kansas loses one more game, they'll be the first team to solely hold the Big XII trophy since Oklahoma State had it in 2004. Yes, that does seem like some low odds but it could happen.
Xavier vs. Villanova. I’ve decided that I’m going to do some posts on college basketball now. That means there literally a hundred plus more mascots to draw. For instance, Xavier has two official mascots – the actual Muskateer and this guy, the Blue Blob. Also there are a ton more games every week and I'll get a chance to draw some unconventional matchups once the tournament begins.
National Championship!! Georgia vs. Alabama!! For all the 2017 marbles!!
(So there’s good news and bad news. Good news: I moved into a new house this weekend. Bad news: This dramatically cut into my time to work on anything. And it just so happened to coincide with the Championship. This was the output of a couple hours. Also, I had to switch to Clip Studio Paint for art software, so my efficiency was stalled by many different googles.)
As for this blog now that the season is over, I plan to do a few more through the offseason but it won’t be nearly as consistent. Hope you all enjoyed it this season. I felt I got better as the year went on.
