While going through the manga panels of Naruto I had saved in my gallery, I noticed something. During the Kage summit arc, when Sasuke and Naruto meet again and Naruto declares that he would bear the burden of Sasuke's hatred and die with him, Naruto wasn't wearing Konoha's hitai-ate. It's important information because it signified that the double suicide declaration wasn't from a Konoha shinobi . . . but from Naruto to Sasuke.

It symbolised that Naruto wasn't doing this for a former comrade from Konoha, but for the boy who pulled him out of darkness when he was a child, whose instinct was to prioritise Naruto over his own ambition and life, who always seemed to soften his edges around him.

The promise was from Naruto to Sasuke — the one he loves the most.
