I am so fucking sick of CGI this, CGI that. give me back on location filming (when possible), give me back intricate hauntingly realistic animatronics and puppets, give me back handmade props & masks & skillful make up……..just give me back practical effects I am begging
Give me back films made by unionized workers who can collectively bargain for better working conditions the way digital VFX artists currently can't
A+ example of how the media manipulates people for clicks and anger engagement.
Run, Paul, run. They are trying to get you.
For clarification ^-^
Years ago back when I worked in cubicle land, we were hiring junior software developers. They didn’t have to have a ton of experience, just a willingness to learn, and some demonstration of their software skills. Like: show me a program you wrote (any language) or a web site you designed. Anything.
And there was this one guy I talked with who seemed super sharp, but had virtually zero experience writing software. When it came time to do the show-n-tell part of the interview he whips out his laptop, brings up a website, and spins it around to show me what he made.
A website of tiny ceramic frogs.
Not for sale. Just… all these ceramic frogs, organized into categories. Frogs on bicycles, frogs with hats, frogs sitting on lily pads. It was a virtual museum of ceramic frogs in web form.
I scrolled through his online collection of frogs, slightly baffled.
“This is your website?” I asked finally.
“Yep!”
“You coded this yourself?” I popped into view-source mode and poked around some incredibly well-formatted, well-commented html. I nodded slowly. This guy was meticulous.
“Yep!”
“So… where’d all the frogs come from?”
“I made those too,” he says, beaming.
And while I’m processing this he rummages in his bag and pulls out a little ceramic frog working at a computer terminal. He places it on the table before us, next to the laptop.
“And THIS one,” he says, “I made for you! As a thank you for the interview.”
It was adorable. I hired him on the spot. I mean, why not? Worst case he’d wash out in 90 days and we’d hire somebody else. He turned out to be one of the best developers on our team.
And yes, his cubicle was loaded with ceramic frogs.

I kept telling Pandolf ‘Oui ! C’est bien !!’ after each pic and he kept getting happier and closer—then he went to lick my phone in his delirious joy and I said ‘nooooon !’ and broke his heart.
i think anne magills paintings and Edward hoppers are like .. exact opposites. hoppers has the distinct clarity to it, a sharpness in the lines and the angles that contributes to an overwhelming sense of loneliness in almost every one of his paintings. even in his paintings that dont portray isolation there is a feeling of separation
loneliness vs. aloneness
magill, on the other hand, has this haziness to her paintings that emanates a warmth even when the subjects in her paintings are alone.
both paintings feel so comforting, and even in the second one where the girl is alone she is still in the presence of the visceral world around her - there’s a familiarity in magills painting that she captures nicely.
i guess i just think it’s interesting because hopper and magill are two of my favorite artists and they paint similar scenes with very different tones -
I’ve always thought that hoppers paintings are a snapshot of urban loneliness - the distinctness of it, the use of cool colors, the stark contrast between the people and their settings - whereas magills paintings seem almost like memories - their use of haziness and blurriness is exactly how someone would remember something, indistinct, full of feeling and lacking detail

this was cute until i realized the fish is probably trying to not get eaten
A fish trying not to get eaten wouldn’t slow down when the “predator” slows down. It also wouldn’t constantly swim in a circle near the edge of the tank; It’d try hiding. Also a fish in a tank in a a public place that is constantly filled with people is not likely to see people as predators.
Animals, I think people tend to forget, also enjoy playing.
yeah that fish is absolutely playing with that kid, if it really wanted to escape it would just dive into the reef in the center of the tank!
(Moorish Idols are reef fish and naturally will seek shelter in the nearest nook or cranny if they get scared.)
many people don’t realize this, but fish aren’t stupid animals! most of them are on par with mammals like mice and squirrels in terms of intelligence, and they absolutely do play.
I was at an aquarium a few years ago and decided to sketch a fish. It came up to me.
I decided to flip the book around and pressed it against the glass. Fish lost it
Swam away then came back with MORE FISH
to this day I love those little sketches and I really love how I got the fish to bring me it’s friends

I assume it’ll be posted at some point but I need people to know that right after this he called Jeff in the middle of the stream so Jeff could hear his new song
You ask and who am I to refuse?
The best part is, first he faked us out - then he actually called Jeff on stream.
I was in the pasture this afternoon working on the fence (still and always…), near the road but half-hidden by trees, and in the distance I saw a cyclist who was really struggling as she cycled uphill, leaning her whole body into the slope and swaying left and right as she pedalled, and I stood there mentally cheering her on, you can’t see it yet but after the barn there’s a really good downward slope, keep going! And when she finally made it past the barn and let her bike pick up speed, she stopped pedalling and stretched her legs out to the sides and loudly went “Heeeeeeee!!!” with a look of intense joy, it was delightful. Shoutout to the woman on the yellow bike who thought she was alone on a little mountain road on a warm May afternoon and shouted with pure glee as she zoomed down a steep slope with the wind in her face. I was nearby hammering nails into a fence post and you made my day.
