happily making my way slowly through writing chapter 3 of my joelthur fic just to have to lay down bceause I got slapped in the face with the harrowing realisation that gay marriage wasn’t even legal nationwide across America in 2013…

The only way to get the writers block to leave me alone is to replay TLOU pt2 so I get super mega sad about canon and feel the motivation to write my joelthur fix it fic

I think a lot of people still have this idea in their head that abusers are shadowy foreboding figures that you can spot a mile away. That they’re easy to spot, can’t settle themselves into a group of people, can’t laugh, can’t bond with people, can’t be victims and don’t feel anything other than the need to hurt others.

So when a character is objectively an abuser but doesn’t fit into these pre determined stereotypes people disregard the abuse. Especially if they’re relatable in some way (they relate to their mental health struggles, to being a past victim, to being snarky, to being the “funny” friend ect ect)

And that brings in the disconnect. Because if that character is an abuser and you relate to that character, what does that make you? “No, no, they don’t need redemption don’t you see? They need support, they’re suffering! Mental health!! Mental health!! Their outbursts are justified! Trust me! They’re me! I’m them!”

(But even that comes with expectations because “complex mental health” seems to only extend to depression or something because the moment you say that as a narcissist you relate to a character suddenlyyyyy “mental health matters” turns to dust but thats another rant all together)

Thing is you’re not a poorly written one dimensional character who people think is deep because they have a panic attack once and while after being abusive. You are human. You’re a real, multi layered person who has experienced so much and is capable of healing, capable of hurting others, capable of being great and being the worst version of yourself. You don’t need to defend an abusive character like you’re their lawyer just because you find them relatable.

A fictional character is allowed to be the absolute worse. And you’re allowed to like or even relate to them anyways. When people don’t like what you relate to it can hurt but it’s not a personal attack against you and the sooner you realise that the happier you will be.

You know ships don’t need to be canon to be enjoyed.

You know that ships and fandom are for fun and don’t have to make sense. You know that actors, animators, story board artists and so on don’t have a say in what’s canon so harassing them for not confirming your ship is stupid because UNLESS they also double as the creator/writer their word is not law and even then you know that what someone does with their own creation is their own business.

You also know that being upset about representation that matters ending up only being queerbait is completely normal but something not being canon and being queerbait are two separate things, neither of which justify doxxing and abuse.
